View Full Version : Edit audio after burning

Hi - After successfully burning a project, I no longer have any audio in my Elements 3.0 projects. I did not hit the mute button and my sound system still works because I have no troubles with cds. Is there a mute button somewhere in Elements that I inadvertantly hit? Does burning a dvd change the sound so that it can't be heard in edit mode any longer? Any suggestions? Thanks for any info.

John,

Questions...
1. Are you burning a Photoshop Elements slideshow to DVD-VIDEO using Premiere Elements, resulting in a DVD-VIDEO without its audio? When you talk about Elements 3, are you referring to Photoshop Elements 3 or Premiere Elements 3? Please confirm what version(s) are involved as well as the details. Is this a new problem? Were you able to get sound for your DVD-VIDEOs before and now cannot?

2. What is your operating system and is Sony Vaio involved in your setup? If you have Premiere Elements 3, have you installed the Premiere Elements 3.0.2 Update? Do you have the latest version of Quicktime installed on this computer?

3. Where are you playing your DVD-VIDEO: TV/DVD player, computer, other? If a TV/DVD player, will that player play back with sound a store purchased movie in the DVD-VIDEO format on DVD?

4. Describe the content of what went onto the DVD, for example, format of audio (mp3, wav, etc.) video (DV AVI, AVI Motion JPEG, jpegs in slideshow sent from Photoshop Elements to Premiere Elements via wmv or non wmv route)?

A lot more questions, but this is a start.

Best to post these types of questions in the Premiere Elements forum.

But for now, we can continue this discussion here.

I did a second read of your question and am now wondering if your details are other than what I first thought.

Instead, are you saying that you have a project on the Premiere Elements 3 Timeline, you go from Edit Mode to DVD Mode, burn your project to DVD VIDEO, and, when you return to the project on the Timeline, you cannot get the audio to play when viewing on the Monitor?

If this is the scenario, then my questions become:
1. Do you still see the audio on Audio 1? If so....
2. If you highlight the audio and go over to Properties/Volume, what does it say for Volume Clip Volume? Does it say 0.0 db?
3. Before the burn, did you have sound in the DVD Preview as well as in the DVD-VIDEO that was generated from this Timeline content?

Thanks for helping to clarify my question. Your 2nd response was correct. I went from edit mode, which worked perfectly, to DVD mode, burnt my project successfully and returned to find that I could not get sound on the monitor on any of my projects. I am in Premiere Elements 3.0.2.

I see a straight line indicating volume level on the audio portion of the timeline, but no squiggles. The volume/clip level is 0.0 db (I also tried upping it to 6.0). However, when I look at the audio meter while the clip is playing in edit mode, the level fluctuates mostly from negative infinity to -30, but can reach as high as -12.

Before the burn, the sound was fine on the monitor in edit mode. I did not try the DVD preview option before burning, since I was just trying out the burn on a short project to see if it worked.

I didn't actually watch the burn process. I simply clicked burn and left to do errands. When I returned, the DVD drive was open and the DVD worked fine on my DVD player hooked up to my TV. So if there was a message or popup I should have seen during the burn process, I missed it. I may have saved the project again after the burn.

The audio is all music from cds. I tried ripping another cut from a cd and played it in the original project and created a new project to place it in. In both cases, the result was the same. I also re-installed (repaired) the software in case something had become corrupted. No change.

My cd/dvd drive still works normally and I continue to get chimes and bells when I test system sounds in the control panel.

Thanks for looking at this and let me know if you need more information.

First, I would like you to try flushing the preferences for your Premiere Element 3.0.2.
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbdd316

And then let me know what happens.

Next, about 0.0 dB. That does not mean that there is no sound. That is Adobe's way of representing the volume of the original audio. So, when you go to adjust the volume, going to a minus number results in a volume lower than the original and going to a positive value results in a volume higher than the original volume. This lowering or increasing volume can be seen in the orange line across the Timeline audio moving down or up.

To the far left of the audio track on the Timeline is an icon for "Set Audio Track Display". You can that to toggle between a "straight line" view and a "wave" view.

Do I understand this correctly, at this time, for all your projects old or new, you cannot get audio in the Edit Mode when you press the Monitor play button?

If none of the above, helps try looking at Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware/ASIO settings.

Start a new project and follow this sound problem through
Timeline/Monitor Playback yes/no
DVD Preview Playback yes/no
DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc TV/DVD Player Playback yes/no

1) I tried flushing. When I held down the control and shift keys, I got a pop-up that asks me to "choose an additional plug-ins folder." Anything I did while continuing to hold control/shift had no effect. When I released Control/shift and clicked the highlighted folder (Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0) I would get another popup that asked me what I wanted to render and offered me four options. Nothing I selected seemed to do anything. If I continued on from there by closing the popup, my project came up and there was no sound on the monitor.

2) yes, you are correct. No sound on the monitor in any of my projects.

3) The ASIO settings list both my speakers and Realtek Digital output with x's in the boxes. The only difference between the two was in the sync reference column. The output line said yes; the speaker line was no.

4) With a new project, the sound worked normally on the monitor while I was capturing. It did not work when I played the project in the edit mode. Also, no sound on the DVD preview. When I burned the DVD and played it on TV, the sound was fine.

5) If it makes a difference, my operating system is Windows Vista.

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Just a quick question for now...

Is Sony Vaio involved in your setup in any way?

I have an HP Pavilion 6110n PC to which I added additional memory manufactured by Corsair. Is this the information you need or is there something else I should look for. I'm not really sure what a Sony VAIO is.
Thanks.

Sorry for the delayed response.

First, I have Premiere Elements 2 and Premiere Elements 4, not Premiere Elements 3, but I am hoping that your 3 version is going to have this same feature that I am about to describe for the 4 version.

To the far left of the Timeline, next to the audio track, are there any icons that say "adjust volume" when your cursor enters that audio track area? In the 4 version there is. When I click on the icon, I see a vertical slider. Do you have this feature? If so, make sure that it is adjusted so that the audio can be heard.

About Sony Vaio, its use has been implicated in some sound issues with Premiere Elements. The VAIO stands for Video Audio Integrated Operation and is a sub brand for some of Sony's computer products, ex. personal computer series, etc.

Let me know if the above helped, if not we will try something else.

Just an early morning add on....look for the audio volume adjust feature that I mentioned in the Sceneline view instead of the Timeline view. It should be to the left of the film strip that shows your video content.

Thanks for your interest. I found the adjust volume on the sceneline, but changing it makes no difference. The same is true for the Soundtrack, Narration and Scenes volume adjusters.

On the Timeline, there is an "Audio" feature with a horizontal arrow on each side of a central dot. This is next to the audio icon that changes the audio line from black to yellow and back when you click on it. The Audio feature has always been grayed out and unresponsive no matter where I click on it. This is true whether the audio line is yellow or black.

Some other possibilities:

1. Premiere Elements 3, Edit Mode, Edit Menu/Project Settings/Audio.
In the Display Format, what does it say? Audio Samples or Milliseconds? It probably says Audio Samples. So, try Milliseconds. If it does not help, put it back to Audio Samples.

2. Premiere Elements 3, Edit Mode, Edit Menu/Preferences Audio Hardware ASIO settings. What is the name for your Device Output and Input ports? If Realtek, have you updated the drivers recently?

3. Has your computer System Restore been on and have you done a System Restore back to before you lost the audio in Premiere Elements?

To be continued....

Thanks for your help. I just discovered how to fix the problem. When the popup asking me what I wanted to render appeared, I selected skip all. While I had tried selecting, skipping or exiting on previous occasions, I must not have tried the skip all button. In any event, that seemed to fix things as I now have my sound back.

Again, thanks for hanging in there with me. It kept me going.

Thanks for that great news.

That pop up message that you mentioned...was that part of the Flushing the Preferences troubleshooting or something else? If it was a pop up from the Flushing the Preference, did you get any further messages after you select "skip all"?

That was the best news of the day. Thank you for hanging there.
