View Full Version : Elements 2.0 Rotate Image to Side & Item is Shortened or Squished

I photograph a taller item, by turning my camera to the side when shooting. When working up the image in Photoshop Elements 2.0 the item gets squished or shortened by one inch (little less for shorter items) and does not look normal when I rotate the image to the left or right, so it is standing upright. This is especially noticeable when it is a taller item, that gets shortened considerably and looks out of proportion. This happens both before I make any adjustments, and even after I resize it to a normal size for the web before rotating it.

However, it also happens with an item that has nearly the same width & height. As an experiment, I rotated a somewhat square image to the left or right, and it also loses height. It is being saved at web size, approximately 300 x 400 pixels, so it is not abnormally large in size. It fits perfectly on my photoshop desktop, with room to spare, so that's not an issue.

Trying to work up an image of a tall glass water goblet, and when I rotate it, the goblet looks closer to a sherbet size. Something is definitely amiss.

In Photoshop, my settings under Image/Resize are:
72dpi resolution
Constrain Proportion is Checked
Resample Image is Checked and has Bicubic

Computer Information:
Adobe Reader Version 7.0
Windows XP SP2, IE 6.0
Screen Resolution 1024 x 768
Video Card GE Force 4MX440 With AGP8X
Intel Pentium4 - 2.80Ghz - 512MB Ram
147GB - Space Used 14.4GB - Free Space 132GB
Samsung LCD Monitor 906BW (Wide Screen)

I just recently updated to this monitor from a CRT. Just noticed this problem and I have no clue what is causing it. Is there some setting somewhere that needs to be changed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

I suspect that there is a setting in your video settings for your monitor. (right click on the desktop and pick properties)
I don't have a wide screen so I am not sure of the settings but I know a few people have had similar issues when they got one.
Hopefully someone will be along soon to help with the settings.:)

Thank you Gary. I hope so. I've spent the whole day trying to figure this out and I'm back where I was this morning - nowhere!

If I uncheck constrain proportions, I am able to get the item to appear more normal, by entering my own width & height in inches, but it takes forever to try to do each image like this, and it's probably still not accurate, as I'm just trying to guess what each one should be. I need to fix this while I still have some hair left. :)

Going to have to go with Gary on this.

First step - fix your monitor resolution.

Your new monitor should've come with the suggested resolution setting, but you can fool with it on your own if you can't find the paperwork that came with your monitor. Or you can google your monitor and you will probably be able to find info.

I'm not an expert on this stuff - but this is what I would try

start> control panel> display> settings -

then fool with the resolution

EDIT -
should've read Gary's advice more carefully - right click on the desktop will get you directly to "settings"

I had decided to go back in this morning and try the recommended resolution again of 1440 x 900. The font sizes were extremely smal and some of the text so light it was hard to read. I tweaked a lot of settings for the monitor and set the text font size in IE to large, and it is now acceptable.

Some of the text is still small, like heading and address bars, but I guess I can live with that. Unless someone knows a way to make those larger, as well? Text is also not as sharp as I would like it, but I have sharpness set to 100%, so I guess that's as good as it will get. I only have a connection for Analog on my computer, so not sure if that makes a difference in text clarity.

Good news is that the images now stay the same in photoshop when I rotate them.

In hindsight, I'm thinking a widescreen application is probably not the best for me, but, otherwise, the monitor is great. Nice color and good details on the images.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

chava - I am perplexed by your problem. I have a wide screen monitor and once I set the resolution as recommended by the monitor manufacturer, it has been perfect in all I do.

I'm no expert, so I cannot help you any more than my limited advice from yesterday, but I would google my monitor and find a forum similar to this one and ask your questions.

It seems like your problems are not related to the PSE2 at all since you are having problems in other applications.

You could re-ask your question here with a new title - stating "monitor resolution problems" - maybe you would get more responses

you could likely go with a slightly lower resolution but in the same proportions as the 1440x900 (llikely something like 1280x768 just a guess) that should make things slightly larger. :)
