Blank square in Organiser

Can't find a mention of this anywhere so am hoping someone in the forum can help me.

For no reason that I can think of one of my photos in Organiser will disappear and instead there will be a grey square with a smaller square within it. Sometimes the smaller sqaure will be as if torn into two pieces and other times it will have a question mark. Occasionally it occurs after editing a photo other times I have no idea what I've done to create it. I've tried "reconnect missing files" with no success in restoring the lost photo. Is it lost permanently and why?

Any help or explanation would be most appreciated

Hi Estella, and welcome to the forum :).

Is the photo lost completely, or is it just that the thumbnail doesn't display? What happens if you try to open the affected photos in Editor?

Also have you tried right-clicking and choosing Update Thumbnail?

If the file still exists, and will open correctly, then I'd try Recovering your catalog (File>Catalog>Recover in versions up to v5, and File >Catalog>Repair in v6. That fixes a lot of quirks.

If that doesn't work, then deleting the thumbnail cache may help.

I have the torn paper icon on two images. For some reason PSE hasn't been able to display them since v3. It says it can't parse the file format. Other software displays them correctly though. :confused:
