Layers; how to get 2 photos side by side

I am just trying to learn layers, and have been working through the online course. I am using PSE 5, and I can't figure out how to have 2 (or more) photos side by side to work with. When I open the pictures, they cover the area, and the bar at the top with the name, etc. is not there. Help!

First open both images then at the top go to Window> Images>Cascade now you will be able to click the top bar of each image and drag them side by side, you might have to grab a corner first to resize so that they will fit side-by-side.
