How do I make PSE6 my default for opening pictures? And is there a "This is how you get started using PSE6" tutorial? Thanks!

I hope you are enjoying PSE6. I am.
To set your camera/cardreader, in the organizer, go to Edit>Preferences>Camera or Card Reader>Download Options, check Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader on Device Connect.
There are a few videos available showing how to use PSE6 at http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/ as well as other sites on the Internet.

Armymom,
- Reveal some photos (JPEG files) with Explorer
- Right-click one of them to display context menu and select "Open With > Choose a program"
- Choose "Adobe Photoshop Elements (Editor) from the program list
- Check "Alway use this program..." gadget
- OK

I am here with more suggestions.
First, do you just have just one version of Photoshop Elements installed on your computer, namely, Photoshop Elements 6? Assuming that you have....
a. if you do as suggested, right click photo saved to hard drive, select Open With Photoshop Elements 6, and select Photoshop Elements 6, that photo will open in Photoshop Elements 6 that time. But next time, it will open in the Windows Picture Viewer as before.
b. if you go to Photoshop Elements 6, Full Editor, Edit Menu/File Association/File Association Manager, you will get a dialog that contains a list of choices to check or leave unchecked. The wording is:
"Select the file types you would like Adobe Photoshop Elements to open directly from Window Explorer. Unchecked files types can still be accessed through File > Open." Let us say that you check jpeg. If you do it this way, every time you click on a jpeg photo, it will open in Photoshop Elements 6.
I have Photoshop Elements 3 as well as Photoshop Elements 6 installed on the same computer. If found that, if check jpeg in the 3 version, all jpegs that I click to open will open with Photoshop Elements, but the 6 version, not the 3 version.
Check it out to see if any of this works for you.

As for getting started, do not over look the program's Help section on getting started.
An excellent resource has already been suggested, namely, http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com
