Are you using the selection brush? That can do that. The selection brush and brush tool often get mixed up.

Hi Denise,

I just watched that video to see what you're dealing with and the only brush that is used is the regular brush (not the selection brush), which is right below the eraser tool.

From the brush palette dropdown, make sure you choose the Default brushes set. There should be a long list of brushes in that set. About half way down the list, you should find Chalk 36 pixels, which is the one he uses in the tutorial. You shouldn't get any marching ants.

The only marching ants you should see in this tutorial is when you use the Lasso tool to make the torn edge selection. Then you can turn off the marching ants with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-D before filling the black layer.

Hope this helps.

I have been using this tutorial this afternoon. I had to play with the brushes quite a bit to get the right effect. It does give a nice edge though. It takes me at least 7 or 8 goes at most tutorials - i feel like a right 'NUMPTY':)
