I just upgraded to Elements 6, Is there a way to have the type of photo (jpg or raw) under the thumbnails in organizer. It was easy to do in 5 with preferences but I can't find it anywhere.

Toward the top of the Organizer Interface, make sure you have a check mark next to "Details".
Let me know if that works for you.

I think what you are asking for is file names etc. Go to View>click on show file names and click on show details.
good luck

Yes, you do have to have Show All File Names checked under the View Menu as well as have a check mark next to "Details" toward the top right of the Organizer interface. Under your thumbnails, you should then see the file name which will include the extension, such as .jpg, CRW, etc.
When you were using Photoshop Elements 5, did you get into tagging/collections to isolate certain file extensions from others? In Photoshop Elements 6, collections are now called albums. You may want to look into the Smart Albums concept with its criteria setting to achieve your goals.

Thanks everyone. I did get it to work. My problem is I can't see the menu bar. All I get is a black arrow on charcoal backdrop which is very hard to see. Does anyone know how to get the menu bar to show at all times and skip the drop down.

I went hunting for a keyboard shortcut for Details as well as the Show All File Names that appears in the View Menu.
So far, all that I found was Control + D to use in the Organizer to toggle Details on and off. I guess, if you leave Show All File Names checked under View Menu, you could just use the Control + D to bring up those Details.

I don't know what you mean by skipping the drop down, but if you can't see the text against the menu bar, you need to adjust your monitor settings (brightness and contrast), or else calibrate your monitor. If you upgraded from an older version, you may still have the Adobe monitor calibration program. It's clunky and hard to understand, but it does - well...sort of - work. Start>Control Panel>Adobe Gamma. (No one knows why it's put on the Control Panel not the Programs list...)
