how do I make a simple straight solid line (not a pencil hand drawn line that gets crooked)? Also, what about making a dashed line------- like this except that I need it to be vertical? I think these questions seem so basic and I have tried and looked and searched for the answer myself, but can't seem to figure it out? I guess there's a fog over my brain today??
Thanks for the help!:)

A line tool can be found under Custom Shape Tool (right below the Gradient tool in PSE5). You'll get a cross hair; click and drag where you want your line to be - horizontal or vertical. I turn on the Grid and use it to help keep my lines straight.

It's sometimes easier to use a brush. Click on one point and then Shift Click on the other end of where you want a line and you'll get a straight line joining the two points. If you want it to be a dotted line then open the brush dynamics dialogue box (it may be called brush options) and set the spacing to say 200%. Then your straight line will be a straight dotted line.

PS If you do use the line tool and want it exactly vertical (or horizontal) then hold down Shift as you draw it out and it will be exactly vertical (or horozontal). But it's hard to make a dashed line with the line tool unless someone knows a clever way.

... and if you want it to be dashes instead of dots then just make a dash on an image and make a brush out if it.
Then follow Tony's instructions on how to do a dotted line :)
