Hi all Bloggers, Bloggers to be and anyone just interested in following along and watching the 366 Challenge.

Thought I would start this thread so that we would have a gathering point to let everyone know when Blogs are updated. I love following them, but finding it difficult to keep up, so a quick post here just to say "updated" would be really helpful to all.

Also, I suggest we use this space to ask any questions regarding how to set up a Blog and manage it once set up.

So basic information to start with, especially for those just joining and wanting to know what on earth I am talking about, here is the thread (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33242) that started it all off

The idea came from "dogeared (http://dogearedphotos.blogspot.com/)" aka Helen, whose inspiration was from here (http://366-pictures.blogspot.com/)

new blogs and blogs I have missed, please PM me and I will add it.

Happy Blogging

Here is the current list:

This is a great idea, Linda. Since the thread is a sticky, if you put links to everyone's 366 challenge blogs in your original post we can find them throughout the long 366-day year.

In the meantime, the link to my 366 blog is in my signature.

Now, I do have a question about setting up a blogger.com page:

The list of 366 themes is obviously really long and it takes up so much space in a side-bar on the first page of your blog. I've seen some pages set up so that you can click on the title of the sidebar (for example "366 Theme List") and it takes you to a separate page for the list of themes. How is that done?

Linda,

great idea to have this thread :) with the links especially as this site opens a separate page for you when viewing a link.

I've been enjoying looking at everyone's pics so far and look forward to those to come.
It's great to see other people's corner of the world and also get to know them better through images that make up their lives.

Julie,
I put the list in my very first post (which even if you didn't, you could edit that post and add the list), from the blog go to 'customise' (mine automatically goes to template/page elements) and 'add a page element' , select 'link list' and you can then enter the url for your post containing the list of themes and then type in the name you want to call it and it will appear in the sidebar as a link.

I keep tweaking my page layout as I decide where I want things to be, definitely a learning experience.

Thanks Lisa, that has helped. I have added a few links to mine now - quite straight forward when you know how.

Need to add some more and also to let everyone know.

Like you, I keep adding bits and tweaking it. Definitely getting easier to manage. Not sure why I found it quite so difficult to start with, because it really isn't.

Having said that, I have no idea why I have such large text saying "Here's the list of Themes". Hmm, get the idea:confused: I can't see anywhere to change it, if I go into the short edit, there is no font icon.

If anyone has any idea, that would be appreciated. However, getting used to it as it is:)

I put my 366 challenge link to my blog on my signature. I forgot how to change the link to a title. I'm at work so my brain is switched to work mode and I will fix it when I get home and move to play mode.

I was wondering how you did that too! ;) Did you copy the list from somebody who had a large title? Maybe if you go to the edit box and remove the title completely, save it, then go back in and add the title back it will forget it was ever big. :D

I don't know why those words on yours are so big, but they look ok. It sounds like Julie is onto something.

I tried the links in the first post - all work except yours and Michelle's, both of those seem to have some extra characters appear after the .com/.

Yes, Julie, that is exactly what I did - of course, that is the reason.

Right, I'm off to "Soft Furnishings Course" now (is there no end to the talents of this woman:p), so no more time to play here - Maybe I will have a go later.

Is it possible (ie easy) if you don't have the pictures in photobucket or flickr (or the other one they mention) and your source would be 'other'?
Having looked at the add on element, I didn't know what you would put in the 'feed' box.

I love the Ice image. What time of day did you shoot to get that lovely light and how did you meter it?

bayhli
January 17th, 2008, 01:06 PM
Thanks Julie.

I had to go back for that shot late in the afternoon to wait for the sun to get out of the way. It was around 4:00 pm (it's dark here around 5:00) so it was off to the right. I metered for the snow really, stayed with the matrix setting and focused on one of the snow banks, plus 1 2/3 exposure comp.

I saw that slight colour begin to creep in and thought I should wait to see if nice sunset light was coming up. Unfortunately wind gusts started swirling and I was already frozen from being out all afternoon. Lakeside is always so much colder. So I got out of there.

You bring up an interesting question tho - how would you meter for both the sky and the snow - I'd want the colour from both. I'll post a pic and ask on our Understanding Exposure thread.

Hi Sara,

I noticed on my blog that you asked about the slideshow I added. I won't try to lead you down the convoluted path that I followed to get that working. I suggest that you try this:

Go to Customize>Add A Page Element>Slideshow, then choose album.

You can use images you have housed on-line somewhere, but I chose Picasa Web Albums because, like Blogger, it is owned by Google. Your Google username should work with Picasa.

Now does your existing set of images that are posted in your blog come up as an album with the same name as your blog? If so, select it. If not, let me know. I'll try to explain what actually worked for me...

JulieM
January 17th, 2008, 02:31 PM
Thanks, Pat, for explaining your exposure settings for the ice road. I'm chuckling over your need to abandon efforts to get a sunset shot. Imagine all the amazing photos we'd get if we didn't have to worry about hypothermia! :D I'll check over in the Understanding Exposure to see what others have to say...

So, when you look at my blog, all the 366 links are evenly spaced? Because when I view it, the links for Mike & Pat for, example, are almost on top of each other as are Hibe & Jen. I guess I won't be bothered if it looks okay to others...

Linda, I figured out how to change the font size on the blog templates.

Open up the Template Tab
> now the Fonts & Colour Tab
> there is a Menu window on the left
- scroll down to the bottom of this list to find the specific listing for text and title fonts (for example, one option listed is "Sidebar Title Font" )
- highlite the text item you want to change and font options will appear to the right.
- the option for changing the text size is to click "smaller" and "larger"
- don't forget to save your changes! ;)

Ta...da!

That's great, a new discovery. I didn't know about those details at the bottom of the menu.

Sadly, it didn't work:(. I highlighted the super large text and reduced, but it just switched of the highlight. I had a couple of tries and gave up - went back to my blog and all the other titles were tiny, tiny:eek: So corrected that one and back to square one.

I think it is because I copied it from Julie's and for some reason, best known to computer whiz kids, it won't let me change it.

Thanks, Lisa, for the encouragement!

I had not used a signature on my images before or ever worried about copyright. But, I'm particularly fond of some of these 366 images. I know they can't be totally protected, but I thought maybe a statement about ownership might provide some small deterrent to those who think anything on the net is fair game. Maybe even more so as an educational component. I'd be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on it...

Elemobe
January 24th, 2008, 10:17 AM
Oh, that's a very good idea. I think that as the law stands copyright automatically belongs to the owner (could be wrong on that one) but it does no harm to make the statement.

You got me wondering, Nancy. Here (http://cameras.about.com/cs/printing/a/protectimages.htm) is an article I found on-line. Apparently when someone views your image on-line it goes into their temp files anyway and they don't even need to right click and save. Doesn't sound like other methods are foolproof either. I think it is just a chance we take by sharing our work on the net.

There is a lot of good work being shared on these blogs, isn't there? It is time consuming, can't deny that. But, why don't you just start a photo blog using the theme list and post whatever/whenever you can? One a week, one a month, one a year....we'd love to have you along for the ride! :)

Can you tell me how you got you slide show working?
I am still very blog impaired.

Thanks!

JulieM
January 24th, 2008, 02:46 PM
Kimi, feel free! That isn't copyrighted! :D

The slideshow was bothersome and I think I went about it in a roundabout way. Here is what I think is supposed to happen. Every image you put on your blog is placed automatically into a Picasa Web Album. You don't have to set up the Picasa account, blogger seems to do it for you. Then you should be able to go to your blog's editing page and "add page element", select Slideshow, then you should "see" your images from Picasa Web Album listed there (remember they are supposed to go there automatically). Hopefully, that will work for you.

If you don't see it, you may have to establish a new album in Picasa. That is what I ended up doing. I can still see that original Picasa Web Album right next to the new one that I created. It even has all the images I've ever put on my page, even banners and pictures I've deleted. But, everytime I add images, I have to manually add them to the new Picasa album because it isn't linked to blogger like the original one.

I also think that blogger takes a bit of time to catch up with your requests to add a slideshow or change your existing slideshow. So, shut it down and let it think, then go back and see if it worked.

Who knows why it didn't work properly for me, but the workaround does function, just with the extra step of having to manually add images to the album.

Let us know what happens, please... :)

Hi guys--remember me. I've been busy with a project for my granddaughter's birthday. I'm now done and it's finally posted on my other blog. Hopefully this weekend I'll once again get away from the computer and back to practicing picture taking. I know I'm way behind.
Anyway, I was reading all the post about copyrights. I found an interesting website you may want to check out-- http://www.editorialphoto.com/copyright/default.asp
I use Photobucket and always save for website. That resizes the pictures to less than 700 pixals on the long side. Still, I know I'm taking a chance putting photos on the web, so if I don't want it copied--I don't post it. It's a tough call for photographers. I've read of several people getting jobs from publishers seeing their work. I've also read of a few people discovering there photos in print and they were never notified about it.
I haven't completely checked out this website yet, but I think it might be a good idea.

Grammom,

your video for Jourdan is beautiful, I'm sure it has made her birthday extra special :)

Thanks, Lisa. My DD said it brought tears to her eyes. This upcoming birthday seems to be very hard for her. She's really realizing her babies aren't babies anymore. They do grow up too fast. :)

Hi All

Just wanted to say I haven't updated my Blog for a while because I have suddenly filled my hard drive!!!! It's all the photos I have been taking recently. I have another one on order which should arrive next week and I can get back to my blog.

Just in case you thought I had given up:)

I was wondering where you were! Glad to hear you'll be back in business soon. The blogging does go in fits and spurts, though, doesn't it?

Hi bloggers :D

Just wanted to say how much I am enjoying seeing everyone's photo blogs. Everyone has such fab shots and it's great to see another corner of the world, a slice of someone's life. It's also interesting to see different interpretations of the themes.

I think I'm getting into a blog routine, definitely stop and start, trying to get a couple of photo sessions in a week which will then fill a few themes. This morning I got lucky with ice and me being out (it was early for me :D), so checked a few more off the list.

happy blogging :)

Lisa, your ice photos are just amazing. I love them.
I do things the same way you do. I usually try to get several themes covered during each outing.
What I really enjoy is seeing everyone's interpretations of each theme. :)

Fabulous photos Lisa. I love perfume one, I can almost smell it. Tried to ignore the eggs, presently endeavouring to lose the Christmas fat:o

Have been a little busy lately, but will be getting back to the Blog hopefully soon. Still waiting for my external hard drive, so I can take some more photos - I am not taking any until then as I know I will not be able to resist the temptation to upload download onto my computer and it really is bursting at the seams at the moment:eek:

Once back, I think it will be "happy snappy" time in order for me to catch up a little:)

I have a new link on my 366 blog - Photobum's 366 in '08. Scott is a photographer in Southern California and does really nice work. Worth a look if you have some time...

Along the top some of you added a photo. Like for me it would be behind where it says "Michelles 366 Photos" Can someone explain how this is done?

Michelle,

I haven't made a banner yet, but if you go into customise (top right corner of page once you are signed in) you will see where you can change the header area.

But I have another question for those who have made a banner for the blog, what size (pixels) should it be please?

thanks,
Lisa :)

Hi Lisa,

I created the image for my banner to a size I found recommended somewhere - 660x150 pixels. Then when I uploaded it, I found I had to resize a couple times to get to sit properly within the border. Anway, I ended up with 647x150.

Here (http://tips-for-new-bloggers.blogspot.com/) is a link to a site which gives lots of good info about blogger site design etc... Some of it is way over my head but some very useful.

I enjoying everyone's blogs so much and can't wait to see what the weekend catch-up brings!

Michelle,

Your "tour" of the museums has been fun! You got many excellent shots and along with your narrative, they tell a nice story of your museum day. Is that Sacramento?

I'll be interested in seeing what image you put behind your banner. I'm not sure I'm happy with my choice. It looked nice with the image that was on top when I added it but I find the tones of it sometimes clash with the image in the most recent post. I may go back to black!

For those of you who are doing the 366 challenge and have given credit on your blog to the originators by calling them "American" teens, I have just noticed that they are Canadian. :) Just mentioning so you can correct your pages, if necessary...

If anyone fancies the idea of a blog photo challenge, but doesn't feel they have the time to take on the 366 challenge, then why not try the '12 of 12'.

This idea comes from a guy called Chad Darnell, and you can check out the 'rules' here (http://chaddarnell.typepad.com/runchadrun2/2008/01/12-of-12-x-3--.html).

Basically how this challenge works is that you take 12 pictures of your day on the 12th of the month, post them on your blog, then post a link to your 12 of 12 for that month on Chad's blog.

So it's more of a free choice as far as themes go, just what you are up to where you are.

I wasn't organised enough with the whole blog thing to join in January, but am hoping/planning to do the one on Tuesday.

Of course there is still time for anyone to join 366, it's still possible to catch up and it is proving a lot of fun.

I have a nice red Scrap paper free on my blog today. :D

BlogSpot's recommend header size is... 650 x 300. :p

I had issues with mine when I made it, contacted them and had to redo it.

Most of the banners in the templates are more like 647x150. When I did mine at that size, it fit exactly in the border that already existed in the template. To make yours higher like you did, I imagine you also have to change the HTML code to alter the size of the border?

Julie... I didn't have to change any codes. I would be lost even trying. :o

I used that size because, that was the size that blog spot recommended.
I also thought it was a little higher than some of the others I was seeing.
But now... it has grown on me.

Phew - I did my first 12 of 12 - 12 pictures taken on the 12th of the month showing my day. (And yes it took all day :D)

http://lisabees12of12.blogspot.com/2008/02/february-2008-12-of-12.html

I learned something about adding pictures to a blog post which might be a tip worth passing on.

So I had 12 images to upload in one post, the max you can upload in one go is 5, so if you want to have 12 images in your post, and have them appear in the order 1 through 12, you need to do this......
upload images 9, 10, 11, 12
next upload images 5, 6, 7,8
next upload 1,2,3,4.
Easy when you know how.

What it does it stack them so if you put images 1-4 first, they end up on the bottom. (as I found out first attempt :o)

Well it is almost the 12th of the month, Wednesday is the 12th March so if anyone fancies a photographic challenge to add to or start their blog, then why not have a go at 12 of 12 - 12 pictures taken of your day on the 12th.

The idea originates from Chad Darnell,
here is the list of February 12 of 12 (http://chaddarnell.typepad.com/runchadrun2/2008/02/12-of-12-3-febr.html) participants and the rules (http://chaddarnell.typepad.com/runchadrun2/2008/01/12-of-12-x-3--.html).

So if you fancy documenting your day photographically or an excuse for a photo outing, do join in, it's fun :)
