Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to add the vignette efffect to a picture? I'm using Elements 4.

i think i downloaded a variety of plug-ins from flamingpear.com, bundled, free 30 day trial.

But one of the effects it carries is called "melencholytron", that is how i get that effect.

Here's a link to a video tutorial on vignettes: http://photobookmemories.com/blog/wordpress/?p=278
The tutorial is for Photoshop, but the first technique in the video will also work in PSE4. You can use a black fill layer if a darker vignette was what you had in mind and extend the selection according to your taste.

Have fun and be sure to post your finished work.

OK...I think I can add something here as I learnt this just the other day in the online course on Creative Techniques.

What Corey Barker did was of course created a new layer and then used the radial gradient tool. Positioning the cursor at the center of the picture he drew a radius to the upper right corner (I do not think it matter which corner you take it to). Now, you need to make sure the default black and white is chosen for the background and foreground colors.

You should now see a black spot with white in the outside circle. With the layer selected do a ctrl+I, which will invert the colors to being white on the inside and black on the outside. When you then choose a Blending Mode of "Multiply" it removes the white center and darkens the black exterior creating the vignette you desire.

Hope this helps!
