Importing files as DNG

I have noticed that when you are in the Library Module and you want to import a file that you have four (4) file handling options one of which is "Copy photos as Digital Negative (DNG) and Import". I do a lot of RAW editing in Nikon Capture NX and was wondering what happens with Nikon's RAW format ie .NEF file when you do this? If I import this way and then later open that file in NX is it still the same .nef file which Nikon seems to read better.
I don't know if my question is all that clear but was just wondering.

If you use the "Copy photos as Digital Negative (DNG) and Import", your original file is left where it is - either in the memory card or folder. LR creates a DNG copy and imports that into it's library.

The effect of this is that if you import from a memory card then you'll not get the original NEF file onto your hard drive. If you import from a folder, LR only knows about the DNG version, so any processing changes you make in LR are registered against that and not the NEF version.

Just out of interest why do you need to use both LR and NX since the LR Develop module is very good?

Colin, thanx for the reply. I bought Nikon Capture NX before Lightroom came out. In some ways NX (IMHO) is more powerful then Lightroom when for instance using their Control points. I think that you have more control on what and where gets changed using control points. It is also very fast when editing a raw file. Here is a link to post where I used some control points when editing a image , it took all of a few minutes to edit.

Both programs work on non-destructive platform which is great. Lightrooms import and file saving library is stronger then NX and I will probably use that instead of PSE's organizer or Adobe bridge or NX.
