Lightroom Playground - Week 4

The purpose of this weekly challenge is to encourage creative experimentation with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. All Lightroom users are welcome to join in and for those who don't have Lightroom but wish to play, here (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/) is the link to the 30-day trial version.

Please make any adjustments you choose to the following image and post your results in this thread. Share how you processed the image and provide information on any develop presets used. All modifications on the image must be made in Lightroom with the exception of sharpening, noise reduction, and resizing. Matt Kloskowski's Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips (http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/) is a great source for Lightroom Develop presets.

Here is my quick shot at this image. I just used the standard steps in editing a raw file ie adjusted white balence, and worked my way down the develope module to try and get a fall foilage look out of the original.
Added a frame and here we are.

OK, I went a bit OTT but I just love rich autumn colours. As you can see, I really pushed up the reds and golds. Also bought up the highlights. Ideally, I would like to have liked to mask the water to keep those colours, but that was not a choice.

I did clone out the overhanging leaf because I thought it was a little distracting, but mainly because I wanted to practice using the clone tool in Lightroom.

Went for a heavy crop on this. I find myself making a few adjustments with all my photos including increasing Clarity, contrast, bit of sharpness & trying to bring a "feel like I'm there" feeling with lot's of shadows & rich colors.

Played with brightening the colours and bringing a little blue into the water highlites. Cropped a bit. Nice photo Julie - lovely spot!

p.s. Since I reinstalled Lightroom, all the images I upload to the forum look very different from the original - the colours appear desaturated and there is less contrast. I have tried "save for web" as well and the same thing appears to occur.

They do look the same when displayed in Elements or CS3 for editing.

I checked all my colour spaces and they are all AdobeRGB as always has been the case. (Thanks Linda) When I save for the web or export from LR I resize to 650 pix, .jpg, at 76 px resolution and the highest quality I can. I've tried exporting as sRGB and Adobe RGB with no change.

I expect there to be some differences but to me there is just too much - so much so that I'm hesitant to post now because it doesn't look even close to what I worked on.

Has anyone else had this happen and have any ideas what could be wrong with what I'm doing? Does anyone else see a big difference once their image is posted to the web? Thanks!

If your images are indeed AdobeRGB then they will appear 'flat' in most browsers since these are not colour managed. SFW should produce an sRGB image though. Export produces whatever you set the colour space to.

Thanks Colin,
After reading your message I decided to recallibrate my monitor and that has improved things. I'm not seeing such an extreme difference now in what appears on the web.

What does SFW stand for?

I played around a short bit today. I like what every else has done. Maybe, because I just got home from a walk out in the snow, I felt more like a winter mode than spring, although spring would be nice, too, but it is too soon for spring here in Minnesota. We actually had that last week when it rained!

What I did to the picture was do a creative crop using the corner crop rotating handles and some side handles to make it look like I was right down at water level taking a picture. I also played with different settings with the TAT controls. TAT works better with the mouse than with my Wacom pen. If I spend more time in Lightroom, I think I will have to change my pen settings to make it work better there. For instance I will have to take off the double click sensor when holding the pen down on the tablet. Then I applied the preset Creative-Cold Tone to get that icy cold water look. (Question- how does one find out what settings change when using a preset? If I made a preset I would know, but what about those that I import or came with Lightroom?) And to do something different, I flipped the picture horizontally.

It is harder for me to be creative this way, but it is good for me to do things different, because I just might find out that I like it!

(Question- how does one find out what settings change when using a preset? If I made a preset I would know, but what about those that I import or came with Lightroom?)



Greg, about the only way I know is to look at the sliders after applying the preset. They do move, just as they would if you were to create your own preset.

You are right Chuck. It seems the times when I looked at the settings, I was always looking at ones that didn't change. I toggled back and forth in the history menu several times to find the ones that did. Thanks
