F.Y.I.

If you all remember, there was mention a short time back about the videos going to a new format. There is a new Flash video on the NAPP site under video tips: "Retro Beach Effect" that I am guessing where they are trying to go. If you scroll down thru the listings it is at the bottom. Personally, I really don't care for the format. I think QT movie works better. Also, there is a request for comments and I assume that depending on those comments the determination will be made to stay with it.
NOTE:
You will have to be a NAPP member to view it.

Flash is indeed getting increasingly popular. Though I do too prefer Quicktime (smoother).

I'm biased, though, I'm on a Mac

Well I don't know, surely the management of this PSE website will consider its members preference before changing to a new format.
I like it as it is, or put another way, to retain the option to download the videos and keep them for future reference.

Hi ...

I have just been to view the new format ...

It took forever. So much so that I gave up before I got to the end .. it kept catching up with itself and I found it so distracting.

Anyone else have the same problem ?

If you talk about the Back To School project, I was able to view it just ok. I think this has more to do with geographical location than video format. Perhaps, in your part of the word, the Net is more used at this time. In North America, east is 11 AM (on a Saturday morning, not the busiest day) and in the west, it's only 8 AM (quite early !)

I found it very distracting and time consuming to wait for the download of each new segement, considering the whole video is less than 15 min. Also, if you would want to work the project and run the video as a lot of us do, you will have to scroll the video to access the pause button. ( I am on a 19" monitor @ 1024 X 768). If they intend to persue this venue I think they need to debug it first. Change for changes' sake is a bummer: Change for major improvement is worthwhile.

Note: Seeing as how PSE needs 1024 X 768 make the work area on the monitor fit without having to use the Horiz. & Vert. sliders.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the input. As I mentioned in the Retro Beach tutorial - it was just a test. We're still researching the best and easiest ways to conduct training online and it looks like we're doing pretty good as is. I encourage you though, to keep the comments and suggestions coming. Thanks for the feedback!

Matt,

Appreciate your attention and concern. One thought or suggestion, even though I don't care for the Flash format, would it be possible to do a Flash version tutorial that everyone here using PSE could use as a litmus test to get reaction on download problems and a general venue of opinion as to likes and dislikes to the new format.
Note: I'm a happy camper as things are but everyone must be considered.
We all appreciate the response from those in the know. Keep up the fine work.

Thanks Wendy,

Wasn't paying attention again. Ran the 3 videos and added comments on the other thread. I'm still a diehard for QT.

Rich ...

The good thing about QT is that if the site is running slow you can stop the Video from playing, let the download get ahead and then simply click on play :)

Even though I have had some problems with QT and the Portrait Class, I'm still in favor of having QT for online training. From what I have seen of the Flash video I'm not impressed at all. It does not run smoothly.

So far I have been able to work around the problems I have had with QT, so I'm satisfied.

And the new Quicktime codec, H.264, is suppose to be so more efficient, it'll help reduce the file size but keeping a good quality in both sound and video.

I just watched all three "movies".
I'm on DSL windows Xp.
All ran very smoothly-- one momentary stop in ipod flea at 1.55
And Scott "no cut" no problem but lip synq seemed a bit off at times.

I have problems w/QT for the tutorials (yes< I've downloaded all the free stuff I could get). So now I just use Windows Media player--no problems

One additional note that may help someone out is that when I download one of the tutorials, as soon as it starts to play I hit the pause button and it finishes the download much faster than if you watch it while downloading. When it is finished, I find it in Temp. and save it to a lesson folder. I then go back and download the PDF and save it to the same folder. Then I add a 2or 3 word description to the file name so I have a clue on the content. After I have saved these and I want to practice, I use the saved file to watch and work with. I think you have a smoother flow when you run the file off your hard drive.
BTW.... I have never had a problem downloading QT or WMV using the method I posted in prior threads. Putting the Temp. folder in Detail View and going to the bottom of the list right after downloading, you should see the movie as the last item other than a cookie slipping in there.

Hope this helps.

As is reflected in my other posts. My support is for Quicktime. Flash has been nothing but a pain in the neck!!!!!!
