lightroom red eye tool

I got Lightroom for Christmas (lucky me!) So far, so good. The learning curve with it, while steep, is doable. While experimenting, I have found that the red eye tool works but doesn't. I have used it on two different pictures with the same results. The pictures are of my granddaughter and grandson. Both of them have red eyes. For some reason, the red eye tool doesn't work on all the eyes and I have to go back to PSE5 to fix them. In one of the photos, I can fix 3 eyes, but not the fourth. In the other photo, only 2 of the eyes can be fixed. If anybody has any ideas, I would be interested in finding out why this is happening.

I don't think I've had occasion to use the tool (I rarely use flash) but I hope you'll find the help you need there.

Hi Greg, I'm also a big Lightroom fan. I received this book (http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321385438) for Christmas which was recommended on this site - tells you everything you need to know about Lightroom - and more. It is very good.

I watched Matt's videos first though. Still the best way for me to learn is to watch the basic instructions and then read to get the in depth stuff.

Thanks for the information. I looked at the video and that is what I was doing. I just don't know why it doesn't work on all the red eyes in the pictures. It is puzzling to me. I do intend on getting a book and possibly taking a class at the local technical college. There is an instructor there that is very knowledgeable in Elements, CS3, and lately, he started a Lightroom class.

Greg, it's not just you - I've had a similar experience where two or three eyes will be corrected and the fourth refuses to budge. I usually just turn the tool off (preserving the eyes already done) and turn it back on; the second time around it will usually correct the remaining eye or eyes. It's almost like the tool overloads after a few if you don't give it a rest...:)

It also doesn't like eyes that are averted to one side or eyes without a 'catch-light'. Those require a lot of manipulation of the sliders and handles to get decent results. Some just need to be taken into Photoshop/Elements for serious surgery.

Thanks Chuck, That is kind of what I figured was happening. One of the eyes is turned away from the camera, the other might just be not enough contrast with the surrounding area. I did take the picture into PSE to finish the job.

So far so good with lightroom. Been watching videos and playing around.
