Okay, you all helped me out a lot with my last questions about layering...thanks much!!

Another question, have you ever seen the pics with a small border around them, and part of the Pic itself comes out and over the border, whether it be someones hair, leg, whatever...how the heck can I do that ? I have pse4. It would make my week if I could figure that one out.

Here is an example of this.

If you search in this forum or on the internet for 'border breakout' or 'out-of-bounds' (OOB) you will find a lot of tutorials.

The technique you are referring to goes by the name of Border Breakout. If you are subscriber there is a great video tutorial by Dave Cross in the Subscriber's Area.

If you are not a subscriber - do a search for "Border Breakout" and you will find lots of links - its a popular topic. I can't help you based on personal experience cuz` I have never tried it - looks pretty straightforward though.

So, if you need more info, as always, :D There will be someone along shortly who knows more about this than I ...

Good luck

Steve

Here is another written for Photoshop which is still do-able in Elements if you have Grants Layer Mask (or use the eraser to remove the background).

Wow Diana,

Those OOB galleries are amazing! Thanks for posting. Here's one of my favourite OOB images (not my own but I'm still hoping to do something similar)

KellyLynne,

The tutorial for that one can be found at ATNCentral (http://www.atncentral.com/tutorials.htm) - just scroll down to find the Breaking Out tutorial by Doug Barber - it's a pdf file.

Can this be done in PSE 5?

Sue,

Yes - although you'll have to modify the tutorial that I posted for it as it was for Photoshop so a workaround is needed. I'm working on it but haven't had a lot of time......if I ever get around to finishing it and posting something I'll let you know what I did.

Sue,

Take a look at THIS THREAD (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26164&highlight=breakout+tutorial). It's quite long but on the later pages Christell and Jean managed to come up with this sort of idea - of something bursting through the picture.

For the curled back pages I thought of following a page curl tutorial or getting a ripped and torn hole from one of the scrapbooking sites - HERE''S (http://www.designerdigitals.com/ecom/product_info.php/products_id/3577)an example.
