I am a newbie to Elements 6. Several pictures were taken of my grandson and I would like to fix his brown shirt to remove white icing from the shirt. Is this task too hard for a beginner? Thanks in advance for your suggestion.

Hi and welcome to the forum. To fix blemishes you can use the healing brush or the clone tool. The healing brush icon in the toolbar looks like a bandaid and the clone tool looks like a little hand stamper. The healing brush will make the spot match the surrounding pixels (good for face blemishes). With the clone tool you alt/click the part of the picture that you want copied then click on the spot you're covering.

Hi Middle,

Welcome to Elements Village (EV) the one stop shop on the Internet for all things Photoshop Elements (PSE). This is a really friendly place to get help.

Your question is a good one. Retouching is somewhere between a beginner's task and an expert's task. Most books place it somewhere in the middle of the book. Very few people start with this. However, if you can use PSE to adjust color, contrast, and brightness, it is time to take the plunge:). If you feel uncomfortable with the aforementioned adjustment, I would put off retouching for a bit.

The tools mentioned in the above post are just a few of the ones you will use. If you are going to plough into retouching, I suggest you read the chapter on the subject from any introductory book you have on hand. Then post the picture right here so that other "villagers" can give you suggestions on how to proceed. I will be out of town this week, so sadly it will not be me. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Cheers,

Bob

I just bought PSE6 and have been working with some old family photos which have blemishes, not to mention damaged areas where the photo has lost some of it's detail. I used the "Heal" tool to fix much of the "noise" from age and simply sanning the old photos. It worked well, but took a while to get used to the way it samples the adjacent pixels.
