I followed this tutorial (http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pselements/ss/photosketch.htm) with my own modifications. It was a great learning experience. It helped me understand how layers interact and how powerful simply inverting an effect can change the look.

Thanks Sela.
I'd love to see what someone more experienced could do with the same photo. I think it has potential for some kind of sketch-paint effect.

Hi, Joe. What a difference! From the title I thought it would be before and after the weeds... :D:D

Thank you Val.
I'm not good enough to get rid of all those weeds. Unless Adobe decided to put in a Roundup button.

Joe:
Thanks for posting the tutorial. It is a really good tut - I like how she suggests levels adjustments layers for the smart blur and the emboss layers so they can be fine-tuned. My results came out so different from yours. Not very sketch-like actually, but I like it all the same:

Hey Julie,
Yours did come out different. But it is similar in the texture of your background and my little statue. It brought out some nice highlights and "glow" to your image.
Like you, I thought it was a good tutorial for the techniques that can be applied to so many other images.
