I have downloaded this episode from the Photoshop Elements Killer Tips section in the Subscriber Area, and the downloading was abnormally slow. Any reason why this 7:09 minute episode should be showing 110.1 MB????
Because of the title, I was thrown off when I started to view the video and did not see any Shapes Layers. The light bulb lit when I realized that you were talking about clipping groups with shapes created with the Rectangular Marquee Tool in regular layers. Thank you for a very interesting and effective technique suggestion.

I subscribe via iTunes and that download and viewing was fine. I've really enjoyed both of the episodes dealing with designing with shapes - very creative!

Although my download from this site for this episode was extremely labored, it did download after maybe 30 minutes plus. By comparison, the download as a free subscription from iTunes went well in much less time.
It would appear that there are some technical glitches in this podicast at this site since this episode showed a file size of about 110 MB instead of the 10 MB typically seen for one of these regular episodes.

I didn't seem to be getting anywhere with the link posted above so went to the killer tips 'corner' where it appeared as a 110 MB download!
As it was going to be 30 mins plus, I didn't download.
Presumably there is some error here?

The file from iTunes is exactly the same (bit for bit, it's the same file/location). See attachment below. I agree the file is large, but that's because of a high bit rate and not a glitch. I'm assuming the next episode will be back to normal. Whoever exported it must have just forgotten it was for web and not DVD.
iTunes downloads things in the background, so you may not notice it takes as long. I'm assuming you're on dial up, but for high-speed users (which includes the vast majority of people downloading media) it should download in around 5 minutes.

iTunes is a free download for both Mac and PC. It can be found at www.apple.com/itunes

Jon,
Just an add on to my details for my situation:
I am using DSL (768 kilobits/sec). That translates into about 83 kilobytes/sec (corrected) which I think translates into about 0.081 megabytes/sec. If I have my conversion correct and estimate right, that calculates to about a theoretical 23 minute download time for that episode of 110 MB.
I would image that anyone with dial up would be in really rough shape for that download.

That makes sense. Dial up users are in really rough shape for almost ever download :P.
(FYI I'm on a 10Mb cable connection so at my maximum download speed it would take about a minute an a half. I can't get that fast of a connection to the server though, so it takes about twice that.)

Hi Corey, I watched the killer tip this morning and tried to duplicate it exactly on one of my photos. I followed your video to the letter. Does Elements work differently with windows.
My problem was with moving the marquee layer around the screen, it will not move around, I can resize and rotate it but it will not move. I can move it if I turn off the layer above but then all I see is a black shape. After I have moved it I can then turn on the layer and it is visible in colour again. I simple cannot get that layer to move around the screen like you did in the video.

Please forget my previous post, I played with the settings and turned off auto select layer and show boundary box. That fixed it.

Jon,
being the all round nice guy that you are :), is there any way that this particular killer tip can be 'altered' at the technical end of things so that it isn't the huge 110mb 30 mins+ download (and that is on broadband)?
You mentioned it could have been saved for dvd not web?
is it too late for someone to save it for web and put it up again for us to download?
thanks very much,
Lisa

Jon, below are examples of the viewing problems I've experienced.
When I click on your attachment picture #1 I'm taken to the log on screen. After logging on I attempt to click again and I'm again taken to the log on screen this goose on back and forth.
I then tried to log on with the log on window at the top of the page and when I clicked on you attachment It changed to picture #2.
I still can not view your attachment, any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

If you are viewing them in iTunes I am pretty sure they are saved to your HD automatically.
You will have to go to your iTunes settings to see exactly where.
On my computer it is here
C:\Documents and Settings\Gary\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Podcasts

I appreciate your effort, but it does the same thing. Nothing comes up in the window. At the bottom it says unknown zone and in the tab at the top that little blue circle just goes round and round nonstop. I even switched over to my cable to see if that the problem. I don't understand at all.

It sounds like you have some problems with your security settings in Internet Explorer. I would advise either using the default settings or try downloading the files with FireFox.

Hmm, I really have no idea why you're having this issue. I just logged in with my test account and viewed the attachment fine. It has the same permissions as you do, so we should be seeing the same thing. If you have another browser installed on your computer do you mind trying with it?

Barb, you can subscribe to the podcast from within iTunes itself. Go to the iTunes Store, click on Podcasts, and type in Photoshop Elements Killer Tips. You don't need to be a subscriber to this website to avail yourself of the podcast.

I also had problems downloading these videos. Here is an alternate method for downloading that works best for me. Instead of clicking on the 'Download Here' link, right-click on the link. In the pop up menu, select 'Save Target As'. A window should open asking you for a location. The file downloaded in less than 2 minutes and I could watch the progress in the download window.

Using the above 'right-click'/Save method, I get a 20 kb file "podcast.php" that does not seem to want to Open with any program.
And here I had my hopes up of actually seeing a Photoshop Elements video!
Then again I failed to subscribe in time.

Well, I hate to admit it, however after more than two hours of 'working' on obtaining a video player (I first went after Quicktime as that was the suggested player)(The problem being to find a slightly older version that would work on W2K), I finally viewed a podcast!
My goof - I did get two podcasts downloaded.
However I also had the same 'no audio' problem. Again after roaming (!!) the forum, I ran across the 'download newest VLC' information. Ah HA!! Got it now - well - yes on the video - still no sound!!!
Question - is this the latest version? :
VLC Medial Player 0.8.6d (wxWidgets interface)
(C) 1996-2006 The VideoLan Team
I have gone thru every Toolbar item and Audio is enabled, and anything I have tried, seems to make absolutely no difference. (Sorry, but it is getting to me!!)(I do have audio on other things so at least my speakers are working.)
Thanks in advance should someone come up with assistance!!

Lou, I tried it again with the right click on the 'Download Here' link in the first message in this thread. Both my computers open a window indicating that the file is 'Week38.mov' which I download into a file named PE Videos. It then opens with Quick Time, Real Player or Windows Media Player. I will look again to see how you get a php file.

Lou,
If I right click on the 'Download Here' Link and select 'Properties' from the pop up menu, I find that the link itself is a php file and its address is;
http://photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/podcast/download.php?file=week38.mov
If I copy and paste this address into my browser and click go, I get the same download window asking me to save or open this file. By selecting save, I get a pop up window that asks me where to save it. It then downloads as a 'Week38.mov' file at slightly over 21Mb.
Try to copy and paste this link into your browser to see if it works.

OK, That doesn't seem to work properly.
One more thing to try. Right click on the Download Here link, select properties from the menu. Highlite the entire address in the properties window, right click copy or press Ctrl C. Close the popup window, click the browser address bar, right click to paste it into your browser or press Ctrl V, then click go.
Good Luck

Hello Joe,
On thing for sure, I can honestly say I spent all day yesterday on Photoshop Elements!! (However not working within the program itself.)
As mentioned, I had no success with Quicktime after locating a usable version, VLC had the video and no audio, and I finally used IrfanView to view a full video tutorial! I then downloaded and saved the 12 weeks of listed video tutorials, at which time I had to stop for family activities. (And now in hindsight, I question if the previous offerings will be repeated?) Since Photoshop Elements seems to keep changing so frequently, I fail to understand why DVD's of 'past' subjects are not available?
Just a guess as to why I had a .php file in the first place, the link was to a .php file.... (And I am not familiar with .php files at all.)
I suspect it may be that I am using W2K that Quicktime, Real Player, and the Windows Video Player does not like said files?...
Thanks!, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS,
Lou
