Hi,
I would like to add a thin border
on the inside of a photo and can't
seem to find the correct way to do so.
Would anyone know how to do this?
Thank you so much,

Are you talking about like this??

If so,
1. Use the marquee rectangular tool and make your square
2. Add a new layer (Do your next step on this layer)
3. Go to Edit/Stroke and then choose your width, color, etc. and hit okay.
4. If you a double bordered stroke (outside and inside), after you do #2, go up to Select Inverse. You will see marching ants around the inside and outside of the photo. Then go to #3.
Hope this what you are looking to do and I explained it well. If you do the stroke on a new layer, then you add different effects to that stroked frame.

Norma -
I must be doing something wrong. I thought I followed your instructions to a "T", but if the new layer is active, when I do Edit>Stroke on that layer, nothing happens. If I do it on the original layer, I get the stroke I wanted, but it is not on the later I wanted.
Cheers,
Helen
P.S. Just noticed that checkbox for "Preserve Transparency". When I unchecked it - Voilá - the stroke is on the new layer.

Yes, yes, Norma this is it!!
I've seen it before and then saw
it on some of coco's work but my
steps did not turn out...
I am off to try again and thanks
for the 'how to' steps...
Will be back to let you know
how it did or did not turn out!!
Many thanks,

Well, I must be doing
something so wrong...
When I went to Edit, it
says there is nothing to stroke...
I made a New Layer, should
I have duplicated a layer instead?
Plus, I could not find the 'marquee'
only the rectangular tool...
would this be the problem?

No. Do the rectangle on the picture layer, then add a new layer and then make sure you are on the new layer when you do Edit/Stroke.

When I put the rectangle
on my photo (it becomes background),
the rectangle turns a solid color and makes an
additional 'shape 1' layer without
me doing anything...
I have Photoshop Element 5,
does that make a difference?

Maybe it will help
if I put down the steps I did...
1- Open photo
2- use rectangular tool and
draw the area on my photo
(when I let go of the mouse, this
is when the whole area turns a solid color
and over to the right it says background and shape 1
3 - Go to Layer and click New
4 - Go to Edit and Stroke outline selection
5- Select color and px size
When I click OK, this is when I am told
there is nothing to Stroke...

Twlight,
The Rectangular Marquee tool is stacked with the Elliptical Marquee tool, just hover your cursor over Eliptical Marquee and it will show both to choose from. The 5th tool down in PSE5.
You were using the Rectangular tool stacked with Custom Shape tool, 3rd from bottom.

Ok, still have my image opened,
so let me try to find it...
Haven't given up yet... :)

Ok, I have moused all
around over the ellipes tool
and even double clicked it,
and I do not have a marquee...
I have Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle,
Ellipse, Polygon tool, Line tool, and
a custom shape tool...
Is there a way to check to
see if I made it hide somewhere?
And my tools are along the top,
not over to the side...

Hi, you are just using the wrong rectangle..up way up just below the little eyedropper. You will either see a rectangle or a circular. When you click on that, at the top you will that circular and a rectangle...use the rectangle.

was at the top left beside the lasso tool...
I may not have it correct but got
the feel for it... it was so hard to find
that little tool...
Here is my first one... and many, many thanks!!!!!!

WOW... it's so nice
when you keep trying
and something does work!!!!!!
I will remove the pic cause I
think it is too large, but just
wanted you all to see that I
did find the correct tool... :)
Thanks so much Norma and you too Doug,
cause if you hadn't said Ellipse tool, I
would not have kept searching and
just figured I didn't have this tool...
YAYYY and is what I was attempting!!!

So glad you found it! Doesn't it make you feel great when something finally comes together? Keep up the good work.

Yes, it sure does Norma,
and many thanks for sticking
it out with me til I found the proper tool...
I made my coffee this morning and decided
that I already had a photo opened
and I would slowly mouse over each
and every tool until I found it...
For some reason, mine does not go
up over the top with the others and
sits just beside the lasso tool...
But it feels good to feel comfortable
using these instructions!!!!! :)

Twlight,
Sorry, when I said it was the 5th tool down, I was assuming that you had your tools pallet in a single row against the left side. Evidently you have yours in two rows with a blue border. If you wanted to give yourself a little more work room you could grab the blue border at the top and drag to the left side and it will change to a single row.

Not sure what you mean by "yours does now go over the top..."

Oh, if I click on regtangle
(above the sponge) all the
different shapes go over the
top left hand side beside the black
selection arrow and the shape tool line up...
All of my tools are in a double row
to the left side of the work space...
But Doug, your suggestions sounds nice,
and I will move them to allow more space...
Thanks everyone!! :)

Your Editor window has to be in Maximize mode for you to see the single row of tools.
Middle box of the three little boxes top right.
If you see one box it means you are in Restore mode = double row of tools.
If you see two small boxes in that middle square you are in maximize mode and you will have one row of tools.
Drove me nuts until I found out. The books say to pull the toolbar away from the edge and then release....
Doesn't work unless you are in max mode.
