View Full Version : Color Problems

Why oh why can't things just stay the same???

I have a new issue that has me totally stumped, and is also wreaking havoc with many of the projects I have ready to print as gifts.

It seems that many of my .psd's are totally oversaturated, particularly with reds and yellows since I had to reset when I was having trouble with the brushes-that's when that color settings dialogue box started appearing as well. Everything looks awful  , and while new hue/sat layers are restoring them somewhat back to where they were, that means going back and fixing a lot of stuff that I was very happy with. This is really upsetting-any suggestions??

If I have to re-install, please let me know the best way to preserve my work?

Thanks [/u]

You may have to go under Color Management and change the settings -- probably to full color management to start and see if that sorts out the problem.

Carol ...

Don't do any alterations to your images ... that won't help.

Can you remember what you had Colour settings set to before ?
Have you made any other changes ... like to the Display (Under the little Apple icon at the top left hand side of the screen System>Preferences>Displays>Colour) ... just a thought what do you have that set to?

Wendy-

In PSE the color settings are set to full color management-I assume that that is the default, and I've never changed them to my knowledge.

In Sys Prefs>displays>color it is set to "Color LCD Calibrated", also a default if I'm not mistaken, and never changed.

What next?

Thanks :)

Are you sure that you haven't changed something else? ... did you calibrate your monitor at all in the past?

I'm just hoping that Ray spots this thread as he maybe able to help :)

Wendy,

I may have calibrated it on Sys Prefs once, but that had to have been months ago-I know for sure that I haven't touched it since. This all seems to have happened since the reset when my brushes got wierd.

Should I call my peeps at Apple?

:)

Carol ...

If you calibrated it on systems prefs then you would have created a colour profile and given it a name. Then you probably would have been using it for your display ... when you go into displays is the profile you created there?. You may need to uncheck the "show profiles for this display only" box.

There are no profiles there that I would have named. Here's a shot of what it looks like right now:

Now that is strange, Carol. The link worked but there was only a blank spot showing for the picture.

Wendy, I had a thought...this has only happened to some of my pix-half a dozen or so so far that I've found. The funky colored ones are all psd's. Many of the photos are fine, and my general display has not been altered, Internet, mail, etc-all look as usual. Thought I'd mention it because it doesn't appear to be a global issue...

I don't know what you are doing wrong at Pixentral but the link is giving us very strange things. Are you sure that you are:

Copying the link from directly above the uploaded image
The image is a jpg
Not too large ????

I really haven't a clue about this one now ... I just don't inderstand why they should be different.

One last thought ... check the embedded profiles of the psds (Just do file save as ... write down the embedded profile and is it ticked or not then click on cancel)

Now do the same thing with one of your jpgs ...

What do they both say?

Carol,
I have no problem viewing your images at Pixentral -- the first one you posted as well as the second try. I was able to view it yesterday evening, and again this a.m.

Oh Wendy,
I just don't know...the plot thickens. I was just checking a bunch of photos and I noticed the strangest thing. This may be long-it may take a while to explain.

As I open a picture that looks over saturated, the missing profile dialogue box opens up, as does the layers palette for that photo. They layers palette is showing THREE hue/sat layers that I know I never did! Weirder still, is that when I click on OK in the missing profile dialogue box, and the photo opens, those three hue/sat layers disappear, and the layers palette return to what it should be, the work that I did on the photo. This happened on at least 10 pictures that I tried to open! And even though the palette returns to normal, the pictures are still highly oversaturated.

I tried to do a screenshot, but when I open grab, photoshop goes into the background when grab opens and I'm not able to capture the layers palette for you. The palette has 3 hue/sat layers (the same three on every photo I open!), sandwiched in between a levels layer that I know I did, and the background layer. Like I said, these go away when I click ok on the Missing Profile box.

I am utterly baffled. I'm thinking of just re-installing PSE3-but what should I do about my brushes, Jodi's frames and PET extras? How do I re-install and keep them? I guess my first question is-should I re-install? This is really starting to make me crazy  !

On the bright side-my gallery's ok now

Thanks for listening :(

Ypoi can do a screen shot by holding down .. Apple >Shift and 4.

The cursor changes to and you use it to define the area of the shot ... it takes the shot when you stop holding down the mouse. Then you need to go into Elements and save the picture as a jpg ..

First thing is try deleting the prefs again .. sounds like there is some corruption ... but I have to admit that I haven't seen anything like this before.

Try deleting the prefs and lets see if the problem persists :)

Ok-now I really am going to scream  !

It's not happening anymore!!! Now the layers palette is blank until I hit OK and then the normal palette show up!!!!! But the pictures are still over saturated. (I'm not crazy-really, there were three hue/sat layers there)

Wendy, don't know what to tell you about the link-I'm having no problem seeing the picture-using Safari. Let me try something else.

Wendy-
Here's one for the doofus file:

you are talking about deleting preferences, yes? When I do the alt-apple-shift and then open elements it asks if I want to delete my settings, not my preferences. I clicked ok last time as you said-is this why everything's all screwy now? I just went to do it again, then stopped when I read the screen-not sure once I read "settings" instead of preferences... :?

Carol,

The settings and preferences are the same thing... to reset or delete the preferences just click OK...

Settings file = Preferences, so no fear here :-)

Also, this whole problems sounds like you've assigned the Adobe RGB colour profile to pictures which had not been assigned it or had a different profile. On some pictures, assigning this profile is very, very noticeable.

When you open certain image, do you recall PSE asking you for a profile ? Something like this screen :

http://www.pbase.com/carbone/image/50459093

It's too early in the morning for my mind to be clear (was it ever clear, the crowd asks... ? hehe!) But you should need a utility to remove colour profile from one picture to make a test and validate this hypothesis.

Wendy, do you know of any good freebie to remove a colour profile ?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Everything's back to normal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No more color settings dialogue box-and all the photos look just like they should...

I am one happy girl again!

What a strange thing-somewhere along the line there was a hiccup, huh?

Thanks to all of you-Wendy, Mike-you never give up on us-I cannot tell you how grateful I am for all the time you spent with me on this-HUGS to all!

Carol ...

I guess that deleting the prefs worked this time :)

I haven't a clue what happened before but thank goodness it has now gone back to normal.

Elements can occasionally be prone to corruption and usually the first thing we try is deleting the prefs file ... most of the time it works ! :)

No clue either, and while a littlle curious, I'm going to sit back and just enjoy the return to normalcy. Not likely to forget the preferences fix any time soon!

Thanks again...
