I want to make posters like this:

http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=113588&highlight=poster

Can someone provide very high level steps to accomplish this? In order to give an idea of the level of detail I'd like, I'll start.

1. Use the Lasso to select the player image...I guess?
2. Then feather the selection...um...I think?
3. Then it is...uh...blended with another image that will serve as the background. And the background image has the opacity reduced to some level.
4. The lettering has some effect...sunburst? I dunno. Does PSE provide this option?

Am I even close? :o

Thanks for reading!

Regards,
DW

their products work in elements. If your new to elements and like that type , just buy the package and save the heachache.

Now, their sports pro you can easily recreate in elements.

I have never used them, but many people like them. Nikonians has a thread about it.
that site seems to be down tonight.

happy sports posters!

It can definitely be accomplished with Elements. I'm seeing at least 3 layers for the photo and 3 layers of text. The text has an outer glow applied or a layer style.

I see a purple background, then the photo, then a sunburst of some sort then 3 layers of text rotated at different angles. The sunburst has had the center of the overlay erased with a soft edge brush to create the sharp center image. In looking very closely at the sunburst, it may be two overlays as the lower right corner appears to have two differnt patterns going on there.

I think you could easily give it a try and get good results but the sunburst has to be created. There is a great thread here (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31780)on creating one using filters - though it won't be exact.

OFD678 - thanks so much for replying and the links. Interesting product and I'll definately have to bookmark the link. However, being a glutton for punishment (and I don't need the poster right away), I may attempt doing myself in PSE first.

Nancy - just the level of detail I was looking for. A "template", so to speak. Thanks for responding!

:)

OFD678 - I just looked at your gallery. WOW, truly professional looking work. I especially like the "Jonathan Brent - Baseball" poster.

I still need to learn to "talk the talk" here, but I like 1) the overall dark background color (a fill layer?), 2) the environmental (?) background picture of the kid on the field and you can see part of the field and fence, etc., then, of course, 3) the great up close sportrait of the baseball player.

DW,

thanks and yes you are close. I'll see if I can find the psd for the poster and you can have it. It really is a very simple poster compared the first one you asked about.

If I recall it is a simple background and the players are masked in. I made that poster after I
watched a video that Butch posted on the forum. I'm not sure where it is, but if someone can find it and post it, it is a terrific video on masking.

As far as details, Nancy can give you way better details than I can. So can many others. Everyone is very friendly here and willing to help. I have used CS3 now for a while, so not as versed in elements. But all the posters in this gallery are made in elements.

I'll look at my files.

Drop me an email....bvanscoy678@gmail.com and I'll see what I an find.

Brent

Hello DW,

Thanks for posting a link to the poster. It sure looks like a nice one. Good luck with your project. Be sure to post the finished image in your gallery to "show it off"!

Hi there.
Yes the type of thing you want to do can be achived using elements

1/ open picture with sports person in .. magic extract or mag lasso
around him ... to make selection ..edit, copy paste ..
you now have sports star on its own layer ..keep open

2/ open up picture 2 with background on .. apply gauss blur

3/ drag sports person into the new picture with the back-ground on .

you now have blurred background with sports person on ..
blend , make b/w or colorise etc ..

4/ add text layers and effects with a white glow may be ..

5/ open new middle layer and drag and drop onto new composit
re-arange layers to its in the middle ... adjust opacity to show
back-ground ...
6 / maybe add a semi-transparent , vinette highly feathered ..

this is only a general obversation, and steps on how to do it ..

hope the info goes some way into explaining ..

( being shown what to do is far easier then trying to tell some ..
thank god for eyes ....

Cheers ....Paul :)
