I voted "Gotta have one" even though mine do usually stay in my camera bag.
I learned a lesson after having a whole series of landscapes totally ruined by a haze from the sun, which I didn't notice through the viewfinder nor the LCD screen. I thought I was avoiding sun effects quite well. From now on a lens hood will be on in the same circumstances!
Even if it doesn't live on the lens, there are times when you absolutely need it IMHO.

USE ONE whenever you can!!! Think of it like a baseball cap...when it's bright and you put a baseball cap on it cuts the glare from getting your eyes and impairing your vision. A lens hood provides the same effect. Even if you don;t think you need one, light is bouncing all around and it can only help your images...never hurt them.

Hi Mike
I leave mine on all the time. I have not come across any reason to take it off. No doubt there are times when it might be a problem but so far I'm good.:)
Likley even more of a reason if you use a UV filter so often recommended by sales staff.

You don't have to hunt for them, Chuck - they'll bite you on the butt all by themselves :D

I voted "gotta have". In fact I bought some optech hood hats to keep from having to deal with lens caps on lenses with hoods when shooting. I still keep lens caps on when storing, but, in the field I leave the lens caps in the bag and the hats on.
Here's where you can find them:

Another good reason to use a hood as often is possible is to protect your glass. Old school was UV filter all the time. Two additional surfaces to have to keep clean. At least with a hood you keep things away from the front element. Not perfect protection, but, every little bit helps in leu of a filter.

I have to agree. I like and USE my all the time. I recently bought the one for my 85mm 1.8 It stays on that puppy all the time. When I store the lens, I flip the hood on backwards so it is protected, yet still with the lens. You ought to try that one Chuck!!! ;) If I didn't do that I would either loose it or it would be broken!!!!:D

WhileI don't have one for every lens I own, those that I do have get used ALL the time. Anything that is that easy to use and will help achieve a better image--I'm all over it.
