How do you change the color of one part of a photograph without altering the rest?

Hi ...
A quick and easy way to do the is to select the area that you want to change colour then do Enhance>Adjust Colour>Hue & Saturation ..
Just move the sliders until you get the colour you are looing for and then click OK :)

Hi,
Just to amplify what Wendy has said, at the heart of a PSE procedure is Select and then Layer Via Copy. Once on a new layer, the modification magic really begins. Picture a field of yellow flowers. Suppose you want to turn them pink. There are a bunch of selection tools you could choose, but I would start with the Magic Wand. I tend to "over select" with the Magic Wand. For instance, suppose there is a yellow car in the shot. Then I use the Polygon Lasso in the Subtract from Selection mode to remove the car while preserving the flowers in the selection.
Next do: Layer > New > Layer via Copy. Now you can start modifying the color. One way to do it is with Enhance > Adjust Color > Adjust Hue/Saturation, as Wendy suggests. If you are a beginner, I would go that route. If you are a tad more advanced, or just a bit bold, you might want to flood the layer with color using the Paint Bucket tool. Then have fun with the Blending Modes. I like the Blend Mode of Hue for this work. It will preserve the texture of the original flowers while changing their color.

Wow Bob, great tutorial;)
It is good to see you in these "pages" again. I have a bunch of these "quick hits" tuts I have been wanting to get into the tutorial area, but my to-do list is long:). Thanks for the pat on the back. I look forward to more of your own wise tips for beginning PSE masters-to-be.
Cheers,
Bob

Thanks, Bob. Sounds like fun. I'm going to try it.

Thanks Bob. I needed the step by step instruction, and I can't wait to try what you suggest. And thank you, too, Wendy. Everything helps, when you are stuck like I was. The item in question was a small tree with leaves that look brown on the print. I don't remember if they were more brilliant in person or if it is what you call selective memory, but I want them orange so they look like fall and not dead. This is in the distance on a landscape shot that still has a lot of green in it. I also need to work on the foreground, which looks great if I print the rest of the photo so dark it's not worth looking at, and blown out if I print the main part so I can actually see it. I'm going to try your method and see if I can isolate the foreground and darken it with shadows or brightness levels. Have a great Thanksgiving, Rae
