Be Creative week #1
This week I thought we would visit one of Corey’s Photoshop Elements killer tips as there are some great resources and ideas available there.
This is the killer tip – Glass Effect Apr 20 2007 Creating a realistic glass effect
You can download it here
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/podcast.php?action=archive (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/podcast.php?action=archive)
this takes you to the PET site, archives of killer tips (also available to non-subscribers)
I recommend watching the video a couple of times and maybe taking some notes.
Corey uses a shape to create his effect, but there are other options.
If you want to use text, then instead of opening the shape and having that on a layer, open a text layer, type your text in white and then simplify the layer before saving as a psd.
If you want to use brushes to stamp or create a design, then open a regular layer above your background, use white as the colour. This layer doesn’t need to be simplified before saving.
Also experiment with the blending modes.
Most importantly – have fun and I look forward to seeing your creations.
Lisa :)

Ok, I'll start us off.......

using text (instead of shape) and I made the canvas larger to add a background and some brush decoration.

this was fun to make especially as I was using the new snowflake brushes from obsidiandawn.com
http://www.brushes.obsidiandawn.com/sets/snow-flakes.htm
A couple of notes - I did find that I watched the video and then had a go, but needed to go back and make a few notes on layer order, and then if I got stuck on something, I viewed it again, as there are a few stages in the process (and Corey talks quite quickly sometimes ;)).
One point I noted is that you don't actually need your photo layer visible very often - only when you are applying the glass effect to it and then you activate the selection and copy that to a new layer and then turn off the visibility on your photo layer.
I think this one takes a couple of goes to get it (or that was just me :o), but when you get it, it opens up lots of creative possibilities.

Mmmm, almost didn't post this because I just couldn't get it right (well what I think is 'right') After 2hrs of play (okay okay frustration then:)) it just didn't improve. If you look closely you can see that my pattern repeated itself on the image layer. Have no idea why. Also the distortion is so minimal - once again don't know why - I tried all settings. But I give myself 10 points for effort :D:D

This is the first one I did. I now think it's better than the butterfly after all.

Lots of steps to this one. I think I did them all. I used Wendy's dolphin brushes.

I tried this with the render clouds layer, but I like it better without that layer ...

Well, that was fun! I'm going to go back and try some more because I don't think I understand what's happening but here's my first one:

This was such a cool trick to learn. I just learned how to do displacement (maps?? I think they're called) which are similar to this. I like this effect better. It has a bit of a WOW factor to it!

I did mine with text and used a picture of England. (Ok so I wasn't that creative) I'm going to go play around with this some more. I wonder why we do it with a picture? Can it be done with solid color? I guess I'm going to find out!
Many thanks for this.

My first attempts at this effect were not very successful. But after seeing Shell's post, I decided to try using text. Here is my attempt.

Here is my contribution.
Happy Thanksgiving to All.
Wanted to use a cornukopia shape. Could not find one.
So it's a turkey. It didn't really distort much - but who wants a distorted turkey?

I must have tried this one about fifteen times, and i'm still not happy. I just can't get it looking how I want. I think I duplicated the layers again and again and tried different blend modes and did the glass filter more than once until I know longer remember what I did! Oh and used one of Jodi Frye's clear bevels....

I 'm still playing with this technique. I love the effect, but I haven't quite got it yet.

Lisa thanks for posting a new creativity thread. This was a challenge as I've not used displacement maps much.
