View Full Version : PET Subscriber video direct downloads

I saw that plenty of you guys have been trying to download the subscriber videos over at Photoshop Elements Techniques... The whole temp files deal is not the best way to do that and the way I would normally do it is probably a bit beyond explanation. All that said, I talked to the boss and he gave me the go ahead to make it easier for you.
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/video_download.php
This page has a direct link to each and every subscriber video file. You can either right click and choose download the link to disk or just option/alt click (mac/PC) and it will do the same thing. I'm pretty sure IE follows that convention, but I know FireFox does.
You still have to be a subscriber, but for those of you that are, this should save untold hours of frustration.
Update: Here's a bit of an updated instruction set in case you have trouble.
Go here: http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/video_download.php
If you see the login form, just put in your details and hit login. When you get send to the next page hit your browser's back button. Like magic you'll see all the download links. If you do not see this list, go back to step 1.
Download the videos in the way you're most familiar. I suggest right clicking and choosing download target to disk (or whatever verbiage your browser uses that sounds similar). There are other ways, such as option/alt clicking on the links. Anyway that works for you also works for me.
If you have trouble playing the videos, download VLC

UGHH:mad: and I just spent $30.00 for quick time pro so I could do a save as.
Thanks Jon. I do think it is way cool of you to do that for us. Just wished I had seen thr post b4.
Is there an easy way to save the written tuts or do we need to open each one and copy and save?
You have been so awsome - I hope you don't go away when PET does.

Luckily QT Pro is fun for other things. I use it to trim audio files (a lot of mobile phones can play MP3s for ringtones, just chop your favorite tune down with QT Pro and you have a custom ringtone). It can also convert between a lot of file formats. All around pretty handy, so all is not lost.

Thanks, Jon, that is so much more convenient. Plus, I can actually download now from my dialup connection by using Save Target As, rather than having to go out to find a WiFi connection.
Is there any chance these video tutorials may at some point, before the Subscriber site closes, be put together in a set for sale? I recently started up a PSE Users Group in our community and have over 20 members, some of which are interested in buying these videos (since they are unable to join PET).

I just didn't have the energy to do the temp file thing before now. Now I can be happy doing the downloading. Thanks a bunch.
EDIT: Okay, when I get to this page, what do I do next? Right clicking on "View Video" and 'save target as' (IE) as someone above suggested, just saves a video player, over and over. I don't get it??!!
bayhli
November 15th, 2007, 01:46 AM
I'm not getting it either. I have IE and my results are the same as Es's above (saves the Quicktime icon as an htm document).
I also tried opening and waiting forever for the video to load and that didn't work either as right clicking doesn't give you the save options.
What are we missing in this procedure or will it only work with Firefox?

..........I found that with the link that Jon has given us I used that and entered my subscriber password. I then closed that page and the NEXT time I used Jon's link it took me straight to the direct download page. The first time it didn't take me there. So it's not the usual 'view video' page you want it's the direct download page.

Jon,
I have another question for you... maybe you have an answer, maybe you do not... The written tutorials I have saved to my hard drive. I found if I disconnect my modem, then double click on the tuts, they want to connect back up to the PET website. Is there a way to change this?
I did find that if I first open Microsoft Word, that I can open them with Word, so that may be the only solution.

It's probably how you saved them--if you just save the HTML page it will want to try and load the images (which still reside on the website). Not a huge deal if they don't load, but it will definitely try. You can try saving as a "Web Archive" which will downloaded all the images as well (though it will be a bigger download).
Or for other Mac users, my best "killer tip" would be to print the page to PDF. You get the images, just one file and a nice small file size to boot.

Sometime soon I can add a filter to sort by posting date which would let you guys find any new ones fairly easily. Right now it's alphabetical which is probably easiest to compare against whatever you already have.

Since they are HTML on the server side (not PDFs), there isn't really an easier way that visiting the page and hitting save. If you're on a Mac, print to PDF is probably a little easier, but even then you're still visiting all the pages.

Couldn't be easier. You can do this with any document you can print from any application (I do it most often to save receipts). Just hit print and look for the PDF button. You can buy some software to accomplish this somewhat on Windows, but I have had trouble getting that working. It has been a part of OS X since 10.0.

It sounds like you might have a cookie issue. Can you access other subscriber pages (example page (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/printextras.php))? I used the main subscriber template to construct the download page, so it should be treated no differently as far as access is concerned.
You need to do the option clicking on the links that are displayed on the download page, not the download page itself. When you are able to get it to load you'll see that the page I created is a big list of the videos--each one of the names links to a video file.

Okay, this is really going to work! I just wish the intricate steps would be outlined in the first place, then I wouldn't think I was so DUMB:eek:
I didn't give many details because I didn't think it was intricate--it's a standard subscriber page. There are hundreds of pages like it, so I figured accessing it would not be the tricky part. But since you're not coming from an internal link it is a bit different than the normal use pattern. Do not fear... it's easy as 1,2,3.
Here's a revised version:
Go here: http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/video_download.php
If you see the login form, just put in your details and hit login. When you get send to the next page hit your browser's back button. Like magic you'll see all the download links. If you do not see this list, go back to step 1.

I have just started downloading the video clips -- and it is going very, very slowly. I am on a DSL connection that normally downloads at 90-100 KB/s. When I download one of the videos, it drops, sometimes as low as 10 KB/s. Is there some other way to get the clips?
There is not another way, but that is abnormally slow. I just tried and they were coming down at around 400 KB/s. If you know how, can you PM me a traceroute from your computer to photoshopelementsuser.com?

That's what I would do to (well technically I have FTP access so I would just drag the whole folder at once, but that definitely is a unique case :P), but as far as I know it's a feature of QuickTime Pro so not everyone has access to that method.

Hi WildRose,
You need to download and install the VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) player that Jon mentioned in an earlier posting.
Now you will hear and see the videos :)

Technically they are all the same files (it pulls from the same database even), so there is no playback difference based on where you downloaded them. But there is a difference in codecs between the older videos and the newer videos.
Since it's an alphabetical list you can't easily tell which ones are new and which ones are old, but as Inspeqtor said VLC should be able to play all of them. In the latest version of QuickTime Apple removed the codec that the old videos were using, so there is no workaround besides another media player.

Regardless, this page is still quite a bit faster since you can queue them up and download multiple files at once.

Hi, I thought that we would be carried as subscribers until the end ot PET. My subcription ended 12/03/07 and because PET was ending, I was unable to renew. Today I tried to log into PET to download more of the Video Tutorials and I was informed that I could not enter until I renewed....Help...I thought I had more time. I also tried the link in this thread and it lead me into the same loop of telling me to renew my subscription.

Barb,
In a nutshell, the Photoshopelementsuser website will be closing down sometime in the first quarter of 2008 as a consequence of which they are no longer accepting new subscriptions.:(
But THIS forum will still be here and there is a wealth of information to be gleaned from it's members, so we hope you'll stick around!:)

Yes. Try Mary's (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showpost.php?p=329220&postcount=1) suggestion. Personally I saved them all using Snagit which allowed me to just save the tutorial minus the adverts plus I could type my own notes directly onto the page.

I did a test by unplugging my modem, then double clicking on one of the tutorials and found that the *.mht files was trying to connect to the website. I also found if I open up Microsoft Word, that I can open any of the tutorials with Word.

Jon,
I just checked your list a bit. It appears the oldest videos now start on January 2006. There were a lot more videos before that. Is this something you can fix to show the entire list? I personally do not need it as I already have all the videos, but I was thinking perhaps someone else may not have them all. I did not go thru the entire list, just a small amount. Perhaps they are all there but not fully by date?

They are sorted in descending order, but for the date they were added to the database not the date the video is recorded. That data wasn't stored, so I can't sort it by author date. It's likely that they implemented the database halfway through and that's why some of the older videos come up in the middle.
The newer videos will definitely be on top though. And that's what I was going for originally (so when new content gets added it's easy to notice).

And I have been reading about PET being cancelled and the website being taken down. But when curiousity got the best of me, I went to see if I could still re-subscribe.
I didn't for fear of not really doing it. Now I see others have noticed that the subscription option has been reactivated and there is suppose to be an annoucment about PET after Christmas.
So has anyone heard anything or re-subscribed to PET???

Thank you for this info. Does it also work for Vista?

It is a little pricey, but well worth it. And when you start comparing, to other Photo Magazines it is worth the price and considerable cheaper. Some of my favorite magazines are published in UK, so it is very pricey when doing a subscription overseas.

Jon,
This is WONDERFUL! I'm a slow learner when it comes to Photoshop and having these on my computer to replay whenever I want is great!
Between these video tutorials and the wonderful Village discussions the subscription cost is well worth it.
Thank you!

Jon,
I have read this entire thread and now I am a bit confused about what is/may be happening.
I am a new subscriber (just last week). What does all this talk about things "going away" mean to me? Have I subscribed to something that is about to disappear? Is there an old subscriber/new subscriber issue about accessing certain files?
I'm confused (again).

When the direct download page was made, at the time the entire PET site was going to be shutdown. But thanfully, the site and the newsletter was saved! So there is no need to worry.

Wow..
Why was it going to be shut down? Was there any indication that people would get a refund if they shut it down? A bit unnerving to know that I just signed up and the site may not be stable for the next year while I'm getting my money's worth. Its not cheap and I wouldn't have subscribed to just the newsletter without the site being there.

The previous owner was going to shut down, but along came buyers who have kept it going strong and are putting upgrades into it. I have no doubt Rick can further elucidate. Bottom line: not going away.

You got to keep in mind that that all this happened over a year ago. Since then, Rick and his staff have done a great and wonderful job keeping the website and magazine up and running. So don't worry. They will keep the videos coming and the magazine going.

Jeff ...
This all happened a long time ago so there really is no need to worry ... its here to stay, Rick and his staff are doing a great job :)

Thanks, its a great resource and I'm thrilled its going strong. I'll be around here (and there) for a long time if what I have seen so far is any indication of where they are going.
Also, I have been involved in a lot of newsgroups and forums for my other hobby and I must say I am REALLY impressed by this forum. A lot of incredibly knowledgable folks and a community and helful spirit I haven't seen very many other places. Its a pleasure to be here.

Hi Jeff ...
When the site first open there were only a few of us here and we started saying welcome when new people joined ... before long the membership grew and everyone was welcoming new people. I think that thing like that make the forum a friendly place to visit and people are not scared to ask questions :)
We have had the occasional person who has been unfriendly to others ... but thankfully it doesn't happen too often :)

Sorry to be such a dunce but I don't get the "save target" option enabled in IE 6 and no amount of fiddling with it's options or my firewall enables it. No help from their help... I'm running as an administrator so I'm not sure what is restricting it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks !

In IE6 (and 7) I have to go to Internet Options>Content and then make sure Content Advisor is disabled, otherwise Save Target as is greyed out.
Hope this helps,
Bayla

When I click on the direct downloads link, the second video is 'Adjustment Layers in Elements 8'. But I don't see this video in the Subscribers area when I log on to the photoshopelementsuser website.:confused::confused:

Bayla,
I did not see the 2nd video yesterday when I downloaded "Add Fun Color to Black & White Images" but you are correct... it is there in the direct download page, but it is not there in the main subscriber page. This is a mystery Rick will need to look into!

I tried twice to download the latest video re: dark circles, neither downloaded properly. I've downloaded other videos in the past so the problem seems to be with that specific video. Is anyone else having this problem or am I just lucky?

I couldn't get the video to open from the website, but was able to download it from the direct dl list in the normal way (right click and Save target as...) and watch it once it was on my computer.

I've tried 4 different times to download the video using the same procedure you use. I even restarted my computer. I can tell right off the bat that it's not a good download because it's too fast loading. When I try to open it I get the following msg..."not a file that Quick Time understands". I checked the other videos and they run ok so QuickTime isn't corrupted.
I'm at a loss, looks like I won't be seeing that video. I just hope this isn't going to be a problem with future videos.
Thanks for responding Bayla.

What exactly is happening when you are trying to download?
I was able to see it ok. However, it was different from previous times I have viewed videos. Normally, when I click to see the video, it will start to play and load at the same time. This time it downloaded first then it played. I had to wait a few minutes for that.
Also, what browser are you using? I am using IE8. Have you tried a different browser?

I downloaded and installed a newer version of QuickTime and got the video to download and open ok. Some things just defy logic I guess. Thanks for your interest.
