Hi Don,
I see that Chuck S. offered a pretty good way to get to where you're going, but here's another:
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/12zWiBIsdijgSjUubZLhg4sVQDfcm1_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=12zWiBIsdijgSjUubZLhg4sVQDfcm1)
and here's how I did it.
First, change the mode to RGB color: Image>mode>RGB color.
Use the "Magic selection brush" to select a bit of the black area. Since this image is just B&W, the "magic" part actually works.
Now you've got the black area selected, all you need to do is select your color from the swatch area and with the Paint Bucket tool, click in the black area and Shazam!
Have fun,
Steve

Don,
Look over in the "members tutorials forum". Graffi just posted a brushed metals technique if that's where you were thinking of going with this. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty slick.
Rusty
PS - I say Shazam all the time but, guess I'm getting dotty in my old age. I didn't remember that Capt Marvel was the source. I read them all - back when they only cost 10¢ :D

Don, I'm sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I deleted the gold logo, but I'm trying it again. Here are my steps:
Open Image.
Image>Mode>RGB Color
Use Magic Wand, Contiguous Unchecked, click on black and get marching ants selection.
Layer>New Layer>OK
With selection still active (marching ants present), Edit>Fill Selection>Color and click on Color to get Color Picker. Find gold.
Click OK. Click the second OK
Window>Artwork & Effects>Special Effects>Layer Styles>Bevels. Double-click on Single Inner.
Ctrl-D to turn off selection.Results:

hi, Don -
you could also try using a solid color adjustment layer. Just create the adjustment and choose whatever color you want.
This makes it easy to go back and change the color later if you change your mind and want it to be, say, silver instead.
Anyway, create the adjustment, and press <Ctrl>+<G> to group it with the graphic below. You could also change the blend of the adjustment layer to Color, Hue, Screen, etc. for different effects.

Now you guys see why I don't post my photos - I just can't keep up with your talent! :)
