Hi

I have Elements 5 and am a new user of both the software and these forums. I need to create a slideshow of 10 images to send off to complete a phtotgraphy course I am doing.

Everytime I click on the 'create a slideshow' button, a dialog box comes up saying "Elements has encountered a problem and needs to close....etc".

Does anyone know how I can stop this happening and create my slideshow.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

I was also getting that same message, then I figured out I was suppose to save as a file/ arrow down to VCD, then I tried to burn this, it said it was succesful, but it doesn't start up as a slide show and doesn't work in my DVD player, says error.
I'd like some help with this also.

I am assuming that both of you are in the USA, so suggestions will be based on the related settings.

Do either of you have Premiere Elements 3 or any other version of Premiere Elements? Do either of you have Nero Full Version software which has the DVD-VIDEO plugin?

It is a story retold many times. Photoshop Elements 5 alone can get you a VCD (your slideshow in VCD format on a CD) a lesser quality product. To get your Photoshop Elements 5 slideshow in DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc, you need additional software. Two of the choices being:
1. Integration of Photoshop Elements 5 with Premiere Elements (preferably version 3 if you have Photoshop Elements 5)
OR
2. Saving your Photoshop Elements 5 slideshow saved as wmv and burning that with Nero (has to have DVD-Plugin) to get the DVD-Format on the DVD disc. It is important that before you write your slideshow as a wmv that you set the correct File Setting/Slide Size (also known as profiles): VCD, NTSC VCD or DVD, NTSC DVD.

Your problems may be caused by different factors. One solution does not fit all issues.

Is your computer optimized for the task? Defragmentation, unnecessary programs not running in the background, etc.

What is going into this slideshow? Are your images oversized? The pixels dimensions should not exceed 1000 x 750 pixels. You can check these using the Full Edit Image Menu/Resize/Image Size dialog?

As for DVD players....they should play DVD-VIDEO format provided that the disc type (DVD-+R, etc) that you use is supported by the player. Also all TV/DVD players do not support VCD. You need to check your TV/DVD player to see what the specifications say.

Please do a search in these forums. There are volumes on just what I just wrote.

Please post if you have any further questions or need a step by step how to.

If you do not need the frills of a slideshow, you could always burn your jpegs to a CD. The jpegCD (also known as a photoCD) is playable on TV via the TV/DVD player.

Yes, I'm in US, and I choice VCR size. No I don't have Nero or Premiere Elements. I have Roxio 6 easy CD. I've burn VCR with Roxio before but the slides don't stay in the same order that I put them. That's why I'm trying PE 5 now. Sounds like I need a better slide show program, someone suggested Pro Gold or something like that.
Is that my answer, my neck is killing me from working on this mess most of today. I tried Roxio to burn a DVD but couldn't find my .wmv slide show?
Thanks for any help.

A lot of people love the alternative programs that you mentioned. I favor the Photoshop Elements/Premiere Elements combo. But, I am set in my ways.

But, how about giving what you have another try (after you step back for a break)? What you have appears to be just Photoshop Elements 5 and Roxio software.

If you have a wmv (written with the NTSC DVD profile), then lets find it. It is probably in a place like My Videos. If you do not have the wmv written with the right profile, why not start again. When it comes time to save, give the file a name that will stand out in a crowd of files and write down the location that you have selected. Then, if Roxio will do the authoring to DVD-VIDEO, use it to burn that wmv to a suitable DVD disc to get your DVD-VIDEO.

Once your photos are on the Storyboard (Timeline) in the Photoshop Elements 5 Editor, they should stay put in the order placed when you saved the slideshow. For some applications, it may be a good idea to burn from a Photoshop Elements Collection where ordering is doable.

What I like to do, especially if I am going to burn photos to CD and I want them in a specific order...
1. I rename the photos in sequence, ex. scan0001.jpeg, scan0002, etc. Those digits should be OK for up to scan9999.jpeg. Then I would use my DVD/CD burner to burn them to a CD from the saved location.

I also had a situation where my TV/DVD player dictated writing of the file names/numbers in this manner in order to get the proper display sequence. Check you TV/DVD player specifications.

Whatever your decision, good luck.

Thanks for your reply, however I am not in the US, I am in the UK.

I don't have any other versions of Elements or the DVD software you refer to.

My images have be put into a slideshow and then zipped, with a word doc, to be posted, electronically, over the Open University servers.

I will try your suggestion for resizing my images, so thanks for that, but I am becoming increasingly aware that either my Elements 5 is faulty or I have done something wrong during the installation, although I have no idea what!

I did download a patch/plugin to enable me to process my camera's RAW files so maybe thats the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

If I am reading you correctly,

you select your photos in the Organize, hit create, followed by slideshow. That is when you get the error message. Is that correct?

If that is correct, I am suspecting a system resource problem. Have you optimized your system. Is it Windows XP or Vista?

This is just a wild thought. Lately, I have seen a lot of strange problems corrected by opening a new user account as administrator. Have you gotten to that yet?

Rah and ATR,

Rah, in addition to ATR's question about XP or Vista, I suggest that you post whether you have WinDVD software installed on your computer?

Other people have experienced that WinDVD causes a conflict with the PSE slide show function and the symptom is a crash when you first start the PSE slide show - even before you see the Window about PSE Slide Show Preferences.

Rah,

I am not clear about your objective.
You can make a slideshow and save it as a PDF document (some functions are restricted)- but you can not create a MS word format file from the PSE slide show.

If your objective is to make a PDF file containing your photos,
then I suggest that you try this different method as a workaround while you are troubleshooting your current problem. It has less options, but may successfully create the PDF file even when the other process fails.

Use the icon with an envelope (to the left of the Create icon) and choose E-mail,
but then choose Save to Disk (instead of an email program)
Next in the Attach to E-mail window
- choose Format of "Simple Slide Show PDF"
- type of file name of your choice
- in Select Size and Quality, choose whatever meets your requirements. You have multiple choices including "Use Original Size"
- click Next and then continue progressing even if you see warnings about large for email size
- then a window named "Attachment Location" will tell you where the PDF file was saved and you can use the "Show Folder" button that opens a Windows explorer window showing you where the PDF file was saved.

Hi ATR

I'm sure I must have the weirdest copy of Elements 5 ever!

If I click on create a slideshow when I am in the Organizer it shuts itself down, however tonight I clicked on it when I was in the Editor, it loaded the organizer screen, I clicked the sideshow button again and it worked! Amazing!

I have no idea whats going on with Elements, but I am so glad I can submit my panel of 10 images when the time comes.

Thanks so very much for all your, and everybodies elses, suggestions and help.

Best wishes

Sarah.

Thanks for this alternative method, but I have managed to create a slideshow at last.

I was aware that I could not create a word doc from a PSE slideshow. The word doc is to be created separately and submitted, in a zipped folder, together with the PDF slideshow as the final part of my course.

Sorry for not making myself clearer on this.

Best wishes

Sarah,

I was so happy to hear your good news.

This is my suggestion to avoid any crisis with your must do project. Do a few test runs beforehand and/or give yourself extra time to avoid being up against a last minute situation.

Hopefully all the strange happenings have ended. When the timing is right for you, let us know if you can access the Organizer/Create/Slideshow route directly or whether you still have to go Full Edit/Organizer/Create/Slideshow.

But, for now, do what you have to in order to get your project out on schedule.

Good luck and thanks for hanging in there.

Hi ATR

I have successfully managed to create a slideshow, so hopefully I'll be able to do so with my final panel of 10 towards the end of the course.

I stll have to go the Editor/Organizer/Create/Slideshow route, but I don't mind, I'm just relived that it works at all.

Can't thank you enough for your kindness and time taken to help me out.

Kindest regards

Sarah

Thanks for all the info. My computer is XP and the slide show works beautifully on the computer.

But when I burn it to a CD for VCD or a DVD R+ it says that it was done successfully, but it won't play from the CD or the DVD. I've ruined about 6 CDs now.

I think I hate this PE 5 slide show program! I'm going to buy a program that is suppose to do slides shows.

Or maybe I should try using Power Point? I've only used that a few times so I might need to get out the book on that.

I have Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 and Photo Album 5 that I love for sorting and viewing my slides. I have Roxio Easy Creator 6 for burning CDs and DVD but it just doesn't seem to work with the slide program that I put together in PE 5.

I tried the e-mail steps, but it said there was a problem probably a firewall or just AOL.

Shirley,

I am hoping that you will hang in there at least one more round.

I would like you to do the following:

1. Place the CD containing your slideshow in VCD format in the DVD/CD drive. Then go to My Computer, right click the drive, and select Explore. What do you find? Is there a bunch of folders, one of them called MEGAV?

2. Take the CD out of the tray and insert your DVD containing your slideshow in DVD-VIDEO format in the drive tray. Then go to My Computer, right click the drive, and select Explore. What do you find? Are there two folders, one called OpenDVD, the other VIDEO_TS?

VCD and DVD-VIDEO formats have specific folder/file structures. From this test, I am hoping to confirm that
(a) you have produced what you think that you have
(b) you have NOT just burned a wmv slideshow to a CD disc and a wmv slideshow to a DVD disc, in other words, you created a Data Disc instead of creating the required formats.

You say that your CD and DVD play your slideshow on the computer? Where? In slideshow preview, in Windows Media Player, CyberLink Power DVD? If you are playing your "VCD" in Windows Media Player, how? It cannot be done without going through the MPEGAV route?

Refresh my memory....what happens if you use Photoshop Elements 5 to produce just the VCD (no Roxio involved)? Does that play on your TV/DVD player? Remember some TV/DVD player do not support VCD. Also some support certain disc types. If indicated, take another look at the player specs.

I will look forward to your response. I have not given up here.

[Thank you that is so nice of you not to have given up on me.
On the CD I have: CDI, EXT, MPEGAV & SEGMENT. On the DVD I have: Audio_T5 and Video_T5. and for the first time when I put the DVD in the Windows Media pops up with this message: Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

When I say it plays on the computer, I go to file/ open creation/ then windows media starts and it plays the slide show with all the music and narration. I just tried it again in the DVD with the TV and it’s working! Hard to believe. Now I’ll try the CD –RW with VCD on it. I don’t believe it, it’s working also. Thank you it must of just been your faith that I could do it.

Shirley,

Great news. Your results show the expected file structure for a VCD and DVD-VIDEO.

I came across this info for Window Media Player and DVD playback.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx

I prefer to use CyberLink Power DVD for computer DVD-VIDEO playback (it came bundled in with my DVD/CD player).

Continued success. (Never give up, you never know when success is right around the corner.)
