My Layer files have dissappeared. On the right hand box under Special Effects - there's nothing:eek:
I have tried holding shift key down - didn't work.
Looked at my Styles in Programme Files and they had all changed to Adobe Reader (red symbol) What should they be?:eek::eek:

As for Layers Palette,
Go to and click on Window Menu at top of Standard Edit. Look at the drop down list and see if "Layers" is checked. If not, place check there.
As for Adobe Photoshop Elements Styles Files in the Program Files,
I am not sure what is going on there. All the Styles I would suspect open with the Photoshop Elements version that you are using. So, when you are sure what is going on, you could right click the Styles, select Open With, and make sure it is set for the Photoshop Elements version that you are using.
What were you doing immediately before these things happened?

:confused:I haven't looked at Layer Styles for a while so don't know when they went missing. They are still there in the Programme Files but I think somehow the type has changed - they are showing as ASL files

What version of Photoshop Elements do you have?
I have Photoshop Elements 3 and Photoshop Elements 6 and will double check to make sure.
Describe the route that you used to arrive at these Layer Styles:
Program Files, Adobe, Adobe Photoshop Elements ? version.....then what?

Did you get the Layers Palette to return by going to Window/check Layer?

I have PSE5. I went to Special Effects to get the Wow Plastic only to find there was nothing showing. I then went to Programme Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop Elements 5/Presets/Styles. And yes they are all there under Styles but I think the format of them has changed somehow! When I first looked at them they were in red Adobe Reader symbols. I changed these to Photoshop (I think) but they are now ASL files. What prefix should they be?

Hi Susan ...
Layer style files are asl files :)
Close down Elements, hold down the shift key and restart it ... keep on holding down that shift key until the Artwork & Effects has rebuilt :)

I will be away from the computer for a few hours, so just this confirmation...
I am assuming that you are using Photoshop Elements 6.
If you go Programs Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 6/Presets/Styles, the Styles in that folder are definitely ASL and all should be set to open with Photoshop Elements 6.
If not, you could try to right clicking one of the Styles, change the Open With property.....one way, select Properties, and change the Open With from Acrobat Reader to Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.
Let us know what you decide to do and the outcome.

Just a clarification on my responses so far.....
I thought that you had two problems (Missing Layer Palette plus Layer Styles) since you started off by saying "My Layer Files......." and continued with could not find Layer Styles. Sorry for the misunderstanding of that.
Hope all goes well in your troubleshooting.

:):)Problem solved! Don't ask me how because I have no idea but the Layer Styles folder had migrated from Programme Data into Programme files. I have moved it back and everything seems OK (I think):):):
