Is there some way to change the size of the display, like when it says actual size, in the lower left of the picture it shows a print 30 inches + wide at 72 dpi, how do it get it to look more like the actual size when printed at say 300 dpi?

Failing that what is the size of an 8 x 10 format print at 300 dpi or 600 dpi?

The answer to this is "not exactly." If you want an approximation, choose the hand tool. On the top bar just under the menus you will see 3 options: one for viewing "actual" size (the 72 ppi), one that shows the whole image on screen, regardless of your display and resolution size, and one that claims to be print size (but actually isn't quite if you happen to measure the size on screen and relate it to the image print size dimensions. For the "why" on all of this, go to this link and read the second section down called "say no to 72 dpi."

My print options under the print menu (depends on printer and its software) allow me to preview what my image will look like on screen. The organizer function in PSE for Windows also has this option, but all are approximations. If you read the article first, you will understand why.

This is simply a matter of doing the arithmetic: 8 x 10 at 300 dpi would be 2400 pixels by 3000 pixels, which you can get, or close enough, from some 8 megapixel cameras, depending upon aspect ratio. Printing an 8 x 10 at 600 dpi would require the previous pixel dimensions times 2--something you probably wouldn't be able to get unless you have a full-frame digital sensor or resample your image (allow PSE to 'invent' some image/pixel information).

If you simply want to alter the dimensions and resolution that your image will print, do this by going to Image > Resize > Image Size. Make sure that you have "Resample Image" unchecked, "Scale Styles" and "Constrain Proportions" checked.

Exactly what I was looking for. wish Essentials handled it better, but the truth is a want to generate some images from Vue d'Esprit 3d software and convert them to B&W "Photo" like images and want to end up with a size and resolution like it comes out of my camera. The link you provided was very interesting. I love in depth answers.......thank you

You could create a blank document the size and resolution that you desire to end up with, then copy your other image into the clipboard and paste it on to a layer in PSE. You might have to "transform" the image layer to make it smaller or larger to fit that shape and size...
