View Full Version : Organizer problem - NEF files

This is an Elements 6 question - couldn't find an Elements 6 area, someone get on the ball here!!!! - specifically about the Organizer.
I bought Elements 6 to use as an organizer for my photos. The problem is that when I import my photos, many in the NEF (Nikon Raw) format doen't show up as thumbnails. Some do. Both the ones that do and don't have not be edited at all. Basically direct out of the camera.
I already have discovered that Elements Organizer doesn't support DNG format - even though it is an Adobe format!!!! (wake up someone).
But, it doesn't make sense that some NEF files create thumbnails while others don't. What I get for those that don't is a broken symbol. When I try to open them in the editor, that works, and the images open up ready for editing.
So, it doesn't make sense to me that the Organizer doesn't create a thumbnail. Am I not seeing something here? What am I doing wrong?
If I can't have my collection show up, then my purchase was wasted. I was trying to get away from Lightroom as my cataloger, but ....
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not a Nikon user so I can't specifically answer your questions.

I have seen other posts of this nature but haven't seen any real conclusion as to why some images get recognised and others don't.

There is a correlation between broken thumbnails and how much memory you have in your PC but usually you need very large images before this happens.

It may help if you post your machine capabilities - OS, RAM etc. - and how big are your images?

As for DNG files then, PSE6 does recognised them - at least it does for me. As did version 4.

I too didn't like the LR Organiser and prefer to keep Elements for this. In my case once I've processed the RAW file in LR, I export a TIF which gets picked up by Elements. I prefer this way since it seperates my 'Negatives' from the 'Processed' versions.

Can't help either. Using PSE6 with ACR 4.2 and my Nikon D80 NEF files show up fine. Can't say for sure about DNG files as I've not used them in PSE6 but like Colin says they worked in earlier versions.

Thanks for the replies.
As for my system, I have Windows, XP Home, 3+GB Ram. I don't think it's the file size, as images right next to each other from the same photo shoot show up and don't show up, and they are the same sizes. I also have Elements 3, and if I recall - I'll check again - I didn't have this problem with it. So, maybe it's just an Elements 6 problem (don't they improve these programs, rather than make them less useful?).
Or actually, it's probably a matter that Elements just doesn't like the look of some of my images and it's telling me something.
Again, thanks.

A long shot but try doing a catelog recovery and update all the thumbnails.

I just tested this with Elements 3, created a new test catalog, and specifically imported a folder with NEF files and one with DNG files. They ALL worked perfectly. Amazing, that 3 is better than 6 in this regard. Guess I'll stick with 3 and write off the cost of 6.
I know 6 has some nice editing features, but I use CS3. I only got 6 for the Organizer, thinking Adobe had improved it over time. But, guess not.
Colin, I will try a test catalog and re-import the folders that caused me a problem. See what happens.
Again, thanks

Thios is a really long shot, but how about rolling back the Camera RAW plugin that v6 is using to the one you're using with v3? (That's if it's v6 compatible).

Colin: It's a bit different in PSE6. I don't think there's a Catalog Recovery but if you go into Catalog you get the Catalog Manager which has a number of Options including Optimize and Repair. I think these might be the things to try in this case.

Install the Nikon codec which enables your computer to understand what a NEF file is:

http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

The broken icon issue is a different one, see John's post above.

I don't know who told you that Organizer does not handle DNG files but that is not correct; it handles them fine. Also if you go to File>Get Photos and Videos>From Files and Folders you will see that it lists as File Types "Media Files" and if you have a DNG file in the folder it will show up in the window as as supported file that you can import to the Organizer index.

And lastly . . . not sure why you could not find a PSE6 forum here but if you click up to the Get Answers level using links at the top of this page you will see the folder listed. Or you can go here:
