Just wondering if there is a less expensive, quality way of attaching the pictures to foam board other than paying to have it 'dry mounted'. Are the foam boards which have an adhesive surface good? I have heard that once the pic. makes contact w/the surface it cannot be adjusted. Some sprays cause bubbles?????

Just wondering what some of you do @ this step of mounting a picture.

Thanks for the input

I haven't used them a lot, but I have had good results with the adhesive-surfaced foam boards. (I wouldn't use the craft store versions for anything archival, but I think the art supply stores have an archival grade if you want to spend a bit more.) I do think repositioning could be an issue, so you might want to start a bit oversize so you can square the foam board to the picture. I took some care to start affixing at one edge, and then gradually "rubbed" (using cotton gloves) from the starting edge, working across the rest of the picture. I didn't wind up with any bubbles, but maybe I got lucky. I've heard that the adhesive sprays can result in bubbles some days/weeks after getting everything glued down, but I don't have personal experience with it.

Dales I have always used 3m photo mount,to fix photos to foam board and as yet have had no problems.some of which have been mounted for a couple of years or so.I spray the adhesive on both surfaces, let get tacky and care fully mount the photo to the foam.Place a piece of spard mount board on top and carefully roll the photo in place.I use a 6 innch plastic roller.
I was going to make a veneer ,vacuum press to do the same job.You can get details of this press from veneer supplies.com dave.

Although not a "cheap" method...I've found that using a Xyron Adhesive machine works wonderfully. It puts an adhesive coating to the back of a photo and allows you to place it on the foam board with a little "give" for repositioning.

I do what Goldstar does, I use the 3M Photo Adhesive Spray.

However, I only spray the back of the photo. I let it sit for the recommended time (3 mins?) then place the photo on the backing & use a 6" J-Roller (that I had for laminate rolling) with a sheet of wax paper over the picture.

I rarely mount the photo directly to the foam board though.

Normally I mount the photo to colored paper (construction paper, acid-free art paper, etc) some color that accents the photo. I first rough trim the backing, apply the photo, then finely trim the backing to leave a very small border.

Then I spray the back of the art paper/photo combo and mount it to the foam board.

I have bunch of photos that I have mounted, never had any problems with them.

You can use different color foam boards too. For B&W, I prefer the black foam board (make sure to get the black foam core foam board though) with a white matting background. It gives it a real professional look.

Be very careful with the 3M spray. It is a SPRAY!! There will be overspray that will not come off of high value items (it will, however, clean up off counters, sinks, etc). I usually get some paper bags from the grocery store before I do some mountings. The paper bag helps to keep the spray down.
