What camera do you have? The latest version of ACR is 4.2. You may want to try it.

Martin,
I suppose you cannot download with Elements Organizer. Did you follow the instructions and install the 8bi file in the proper folder (and move/rename the old one)? If that is OK, do you have the Nikon software installed? It appears to sometimes be interfering with Adobe's.
Else, you can use the Nikon software to download and then bring the images into Elements. Also Windows Copy and Paste would do the job.

i may have downloaded something from nikon in-advertantly (i wouldnt know how to remove it or where it is though) but i have removed nikon picture project. i did remove the original raw 8 bit file to desktop but i didnt rename it. i might try reinstalling elements tonight. and starting from scratch.
thanks for your time

First thing I would do is check which version of Adobe Camera Raw is installed. Go Help>About Plug-in>Camera Raw and it will pop up a screen that shows the Version Number. You need at least 3.6 to open D80 NEF files although like Juergen said 4.2 is much better. If it doesn't show 3.6 then you need to replace the Camera Raw.8bi file as per the read-me instructions on the Adobe Camera Raw download site. No need to reinstall Elements and I doubt it would help as it likely would reinstall with the wrong Camera Raw version.
