Hello,

I am new to the Premiere Elements 2 software and a have a few questions.

When I play the sample movie in Premiere Element 2 the frames are viewable in the timeline as the movie plays. When I played my first movie created, the frames are not viewable until I stopped the movie and then the images "played' catch-up and are displayed. Anyone know what is causing this?

When I export a WMV movie at 320x240 it takes 30 minutes for each pass. When the WMV movie is exported at 720x480 it takes 2 hours for each pass. Is this normal?

I read that if you just do one pass on the export the video quality is not as good...true? Is there any explanation about the passes and what pass two does as opposed to pass one?

Is there any automatic way to delete/clean-up a project from Premiere Elements and all of its folders (Media Cache Files, Encoded Files, Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files, Adobe Premiere Elements Auto-Save) or does it have to be done manually?

Thanks

Here are two links on the topic of deleting PE projects (there is no one button):

On One & Two Pass Compression…I. have not worked with this topic, but this is my understanding of what is what….see if it helps and comes together for you….

You probably read the same things, namely, the core of One Pass/Two Pass Compression is
“How many times the Encoder will view the media before it begins encoding.”
and
“Two Pass will give you better quality but takes longer to encode.”

However, I did find this link titled “Encoding Audio and Video with Windows Media Codecs” which goes into its topic in depth. From what you have been describing for your Export to wmv, your Premiere Elements 2 is using the codec Window Media Video 9 (Two Pass VBR) for the task.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/codecs.aspx

The content of the following is more generalized:

So, the times that you have been describing sound consistent with what has been reported elsewhere.

An answer to the next last part of your question is in the works.

Need clarification....

"When I play the sample movie in Premiere Elements 2..."
Are you saying that you have a sample movie on the Timeline, you press play and view the movie on the Monitor in Edit? What is the format including frame rate of this sample?

"When I play my first movie created,...."
Are you saying that you have your "first movie created" on the Timeline, but, when you press play, the Monitor is blank and remains so until you press the play button again? Then, the movie plays out on the Monitor in Edit?

What is the length and the format including frame rate of this "first movie created" that is on the Timeline? How did you get it there? Get Media? Media Downloader? Did you wait for Conformation to be complete before going further? Did you Render in Edit before attempting to play it out on the Monitor from the Timeline? Did that video on the Timeline have a red line across the top when you attempted to play/view via Monitor in Edit? And, where did you create this movie, in Premiere Elements 2, how?

Have we established that your computer resources are OK?

Yes.

What is the format including frame rate of this sample?

It's the Tutorial included with Premiere Elements 2, AVI format, 30 fps

"When I play my first movie created,...."
Are you saying that you have your "first movie created" on the Timeline, but, when you press play, the Monitor is blank and remains so until you press the play button again? Then, the movie plays out on the Monitor in Edit?

No, I am in Edit, when I play the movie it shows fine in the monitor, but in the timeline, as the frames pass by the images are grayed out/not viewable until the movie is stopped.

What is the length and the format including frame rate of this "first movie created" that is on the Timeline?

It happens with both of the movies that I have edited, I know you are famliar with my second one, the one I had all of the export problems with (4 minutes, MP4, 30fps).

How did you get it there? Get Media? Media Downloader? Did you wait for Conformation to be complete before going further?

Add Media from files and folders

Did you Render in Edit before attempting to play it out on the Monitor from the Timeline?

Yes

Did that video on the Timeline have a red line across the top when you attempted to play/view via Monitor in Edit?

No

And, where did you create this movie, in Premiere Elements 2, how?

I am working on a 22 clip movie and when I play my project in Premiere Elements 2 (after rendering) the video in the timeline does as before it grays out until I stop the video. Also the video in monitor window starts to become choppy. It act as if the video card can not keep up.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already but...

Version 2 has a Timeline Scrolling option that does not work well at all, have you turned off the Smooth Scrolling? If not, it is best to set it to 'None' but you can try 'Page' and see how that works. Hope it helps.

I am still thinking about your last response. I will be watching to see how you do with Chuck Engels suggestion regarding Timeline scrolling.

I have had Premiere Elements 2 since it came out, and I must reluctantly admit that I have never encountered the Timeline scrolling options. My first thoughts were what are they and where are they.

I did a little homework and found them under Edit/Preference/General, "Timeline Playback Auto-Scrolling" with the options being:
No Scroll
Page Scroll
Smooth Scroll (the setting that has been on all this time)

I need to explore this feature (probably tomorrow). Thanks, CE for the intro into these options.

Chuck Engels,

Thanks for the tip! Changing the timeline scrolling to "page" or "no scroll" did make the video play in the monitor window better, no choppy frames.

The timeline scroll set to "page" still grayed out the timeline until the video stopped, but at least I know that it is a software issue and not my PC system.

p.s. got any tips on when trying to export a video as wmv and keep getting "Export Error" or Error the PE2 did not send a frame and the export is cancelled?
