I am using v4 and, after reading the comments on v6, wonder if I should just upgrade to v5 and wait for patches, etc. in v6.
If I upgraded to a version previous to the current version would I be expected to pay for it?
Wishful thinking? :p

Mike,
Don't expect patches for v6... with one notable exception*, Adobe "patches" Elements by releasing a new version.
I don't quite follow your question about upgrading previous or current versions...

* They patched PSE3 to fix an inability to use "international" date formats. That is the only patch to PSE of which I am aware. Ever.

Byron, I believe you're right. When you think about it, it's pretty amazing that all those versions of PSE have been so clean that they didn't really need patching. Of course, they all have the "Reset Preferences" process to bring them back to life when the program strays into Never-Never Land....:)

I have v4 so upgrading to v6 is 2 jumps, as it were. Sometimes upgrade to v lower than the current ones; in this case 6 are free. I want to upgrade to 5 and wait for the bugs to be cleared in 6 before I do an upgrade to it. But I won't do it if I have to pay close to $70 for 5 AND 6. Do you see what I mean?

"Clean"?
I've been reading a lot about v6 and it's missing "Help", black "difficult to see" background, etc etc. I've also heard references to "patches" that will be required and should be waited for. I haven't read a lot of positive comments about v6.
