View Full Version : No Audio Through PC On DVD Playback

My burned DVDs play fine on DVD players but the audio does not come through when I play them on my PC.

I have used Memorex and Verbatim DVDs with the same outcome and it is an LG H10A DVD drive in my PC. These DVDs have been burned using PE3 and also using Nero SmartStart after saving the movie to another folder. I try to play them via Windows Media Player.

Is there something I can do to correct this?

Karen,

What version of Windows Media Player do you have?

Next, open Windows Media Player and go
Tools/Options/DVD/Advanced
What does the header say? It should say "........Audio Decoder". Fill in the "......". By any chance does it say "Nero Audio Decoder Filter"?

I know you have Nero software installed. Is it the full version and what version?
Could you get video/audio for DVDs with Windows Media Player before you installed Nero?

Better yet, do you have CyberLink Power DVD installed on your computer. The one that I have came bundled in with one of my DVD/CD burners. I prefer to use that for DVD-VIDEO playback.

But, I have Windows Media Player 10 with "Arcsoft Co Mpeg Audio Decoder", and with it I can get both video and audio for playback of DVD-VIDEO.

I am suspecting it is Nero messing up Windows Media Player, but that is a guess. Take a look at the following for an overview, and we will work on this further.

“How can I fix Sound Problems in Windows Media Player?”

I have Media Player Version 11.

Following your instructions, it does say 'Nero Audio Decoder Filter'. Is that part of the problem?

My Nero StartSmart came from a Not For Resale cd that contains Nero Express 6.6 and NeroVision3. Funny, I just bought Nero 8 Ultra ($40 off!) but I'm afraid to install it until after I burn and archive 2 current PE3 projects. I'm worried it could override - even corrupt something - that is near completion.

I can't tell you if Media Player was originally able to play DVDs successfully. This is a new computer and I installed Nero days after I got it.

I wonder if we should leave well enough alone until those 2 projects are off my computer. Then I'll try to correctly install Nero 8 Ultra and pick it up from there so I can play my DVDs on my computer.

So there may be no point in stating what I found when I followed the Sound Device Troubleshooter steps in the link you provided if we're going to wait until Ultra 8 is installed. But if it sheds any more light, I went to Tools>Options>Devices>Speakers>Advanced>Hardware and I thought I should find my Logitech X-230 speakers listed here.

But all I saw listed was my DVD/CD-ROM drive, Realtek High Def Audio, Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Media Control Devices, Legacy Video Capture Devices and Video Codecs. At least all of these devices are listed as working properly!

Let me know how you would like to proceed. Thanks again for your attention.

Karen,

When you feel the time is right, remove your Nero 6.6 from the computer COMPLETELY making sure that you use the Nero Clean Tool from Nero.

http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-cleantools.html

The odds are good that there is a conflict between the sharing between Nero and the rest. After you do the uninstall with the Nero Clean Tool, either reinstall the 6.6 version or the new one. This has been a Nero driver problem, not necessarily version confined.

In my case, my CyberLink Power DVD suddenly would not work anymore and kept asking me for a missing Nero component that had nothing to do with CyberLink Power DVD. For me, the Nero Clean Tool uninstall, followed by Nero reinstall took care of the problem. I was then able to use Nero 6.6 and CyberLink Power DVD to do their own things.

When doing this, double check by going to the Ahead folder in the Program Files to make sure the last signs of Nero are no longer before you reinstall old or install the new version.

Just check around your computer to see if any other program is acting strangely. Do you have the CyberLink Power DVD program?

My diagnosis is not written in stone, but, based on my experience, there is a good chance it likely correct. Keep your System Restore on in case of any other funny business in the process.

Let me know how you do. I keep looking around for any additional information.

I expect to be finished with my 2 projects and ready to tackle the Nero issue tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

I don't have CyberLink Power DVD. If it matters, I have Yahoo Music Jukebox for my audio.

Thx for the pointers to correctly uninstall Nero and I'll be back here in a day or so!

Quick add on...

Think about testing Window Media Player for DVD-VIDEO video/audio after you completely remove your Nero 6.6 and before you install Nero again. I think that will give you more of an idea what is happening or not happening.

OK, here's where we're at....

I used the Nero Clean Tool with a slight problem. A message - Nero seems to be running. Please try to close this program. - kept appearing. I wasn't using any other programs though so when I clicked on Ignore it moved on and cleaned out Nero, I think.

The 'Ahead' folder is now gone as well as my StartSmart desktop icon, but when I searched for any Nero files I found the following: (Some I know are innocent and I could probably remove without any further problem and others concern me. So I am leaving them all alone until you tell me what to do with them.)

Nero Cover Designs folder with some designs I'd like to keep.
NeroVision folder with subfolders Captured Video, Exported Audio, Exported Video and Imported Video - all empty.
Then in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch I have:
Nero.exe-30D5F6F2.pf
NeroCheck.exe-2269C4C3.pf
NeroMediaPlayer.exe-1873E7C4.pf
NeroStartSmart.exe-0C04C914.pf
NeroVision.exe-36CFFC62.pf

Next, I tried to play a DVD in Windows Media Player with this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

Lastly, at your suggestion to check around with other programs, QuickTime gave problems in the past trying to play SOME (not all) of the video tips right here in the subscriber area. The error message is: An error occurred inside a plug-in contained on this page.

When I try to update QuickTime(advice given by others) another error message displays:
Miscrosoft Visual C+++ RunTime Library - Buffer overrun detected.

That's about it... I won't fool with anything concerning this until I hear from you. Thx in advance.

Karen,

1. Did your original Nero 6 come from a disc? If so and you are considering returning to the older version, just get rid of those Nero files that you found. Nothing Nero should be left after the clean tool. You could do a repeat of the clean tool procedure. Save anything you are worried about to disc if need be. If your Windows XP/System Restore was operating, you could try to restore some settings with System Restore when and if indicated, depends.....

2. After you clean away Nero files, try QuickTime again and, if necessary, uninstall QuickTime completely and do a complete reinstall with the latest version:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

followed by making sure QuickTime is working properly.

3. Next install either the old or new Nero versions that you have and see if QuickTime is still working and Window Media Player is now functioning. If you need to download Window Media Player, you can go to the link below and select the version:

http://oldapps.com/windows_media_player.htm

Depending on the chain of events, uninstalling/reinstalling Windows Media Player may be on the schedule of events.

4. Make sure your computer is defragmented.

Let me know what you think about those ideas and let me know what happens.

My Nero 6.6 is from a disc which I have as backup but I would really like to sucessfully download the new 8 Ultra I just bought...when/if the time is right. I hope I didn't waste my money buying problems.

Anyway, I deleted all the old leftover Nero files simply by highlighting and hitting 'delete'. (Because when I tried the Nero Clean Tool this time, an error message said something about an invalid path when I told it which folder to delete the files from.)

QuickTime still wouldn't play a select few video tips from this site - same as before so I removed QuickTime using Control Panel>Add/Remove.

I'm wondering if I needed to download AppDelete to properly remove QuickTime because I still have some QuickTime files:

QuickTime Installer was in My Docs and I went ahead and deleted this. I think it was a previous downlaod I never used to reinstall QuickTime once before.

Still on my computer:

In C:\Program Files is an empty folder titled QuickTime
In C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PE3\Media IO\writers, there are 7 different QuickTime languages like QuickTimeWriter.dutch plus 1 titled QuickTimeWriter.vwr.
In C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PE3\Media IO\Plug-ins\en_US is CompilerQuickTime.
In C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PE3\Media IO\presets\Elements is another empty folder titled QuickTime.
And last, in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\plug-ins\Multimedia\MPP.

Can I simply delete or download AppDelete from QuickTime website to delete these?

Then I guess I'll try to reinstall QuickTime and see how it works before moving on to Media Player.

Wow, sorry to bog you down with this. I'm worried I have a big problem here.

I would leave those Adobe files alone.

That AppDelete sounds like it should be made to order. I have not run into it before. But, is it not just for Mac? Do you have PC or Mac? I have been going on the assumption that you are a PC person. Apple instructions below are for PC.

From what I have read, the uninstall through Add/Remove should do the job for QuickTime.
The first one sounds more complete, the second more generic.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60342

Whenever, it talks Registry I get uncomfortable. So, read this one, but hold off on using it just yet. I have used the CClean which did a good job dust busting my files, but did not solve the problem I was having at that time with startup, but that is a whole other story.

http://pabsungenis.livejournal.com/94683.html

Nero is the notorious one in this area because of grabbing, not sharing, and messing up other programs. There could be other reasons for your situation, but the odds are with Nero because of its history for doing this type of thing.

Try to do one thing at a time without introducing variables. My Rx for now is clean up and systematic reinstall. Do not over clean least…. Depending on the chain of events, we may want to introduce System Restore into the picture, but we have to define when and if your programs were ever OK and your System Restore has been set to on all this time.

Very quickly, you are correct that I am PC not Mac. I didn't think about that when I read about that AppDelete. Sorry about the confusion.

I'll read your links and try to tackle it as you suggest. Will let you now my progress.

I completely uninstalled QuickTime as well as iTunes, AppleSoftware Update and AppleMobileDeviceSupport as described in the 1st link you provided. So far, so good. After searching, I verified nothing was left from QuickTime except the files connected with Adobe as described a few threads back. But I left them alone.

I tested a DVD in Media Player, but got the same message: Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. Is it time to uninstall and reinstall Media Player?

Meanwhile, I used the 3rd link provided to reinstall QuickTime only, not iTunes, and it successfully installed QuickTime and AppleSoftwareUpdate files. However, I tested it with the video tutorial tips again on this site and had the same error on the same few lessons: Plug In Error - An error occurred inside a plug-in contained on this page. It's weird how it only happens to a few of them while most of them play just fine.

I'm not sure how to proceed. Whenever you think I just need to give up and take this thing into a shop, just let me know. (gulp!) I feel I'm really taxing you with this problem. Sorry.

Karen,

This is my thoughts before taking it to the Shop.

From my understanding, you have:
removed Nero 6.6
removed reinstalled QuickTime/iTunes, latest versions
have not re-installed Nero 6.6 or any other version of Nero yet.

If that is where you are: then do a complete uninstall/reinstall for the Windows Media Player 10. See what happens. You can always update to the 11 version later on depending on what is happening.

Then reinstall Nero 6.6 and see where you are. What plays and what does not ???

If back to ground zero, then Next step Shop. This may require Registry work which is best handled in the Shop.

Your assumptions thus far are correct except I only reinstalled QuickTime, not iTunes with it.

Now I uninstalled Media Player 11, but before I reinstall, I searched and found these Media Player files still under Program Files (mostly empty):

Windows Media Connect 2 folder empty plus Windows Media Player folder with empty subfolders Icons, Network Sharing, Sample Playlists and Visualizations and a Skins subfolder that has 2 (Compact and Revert) in it.

Is it necessary to delete these before I try to properly reinstall Media Player11?

I would just go with whatever Add/Remove did for the Windows Media Player. Leave your search finds as is for now. I had troubles with Windows Media Player 11 messing up my Record Now software, so I down graded back to the 10 version and have ignore the update messages from Windows Media Player. Everything coexists now....QuickTime/iTunes/Nero 6.6/Windows Media Player/Record Now....

After you reinstall Windows Media Player, take a look to see what decoder is there under Tools/Options/DVD/Advanced.

Whatever the case, continue to the Nero reinstall. Then take a look at what decoder Windows Media Player is listing.

Then do a check to see what QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and Nero can do.

It seems the problem is getting worse. I have been working in PSE5 and saving a few repaired pictures as JPEG that now are unrecognized by PSE5 when I try to reopen from the file. Yet if I go to Open Recently Edited Files, they work. I can't open them in PE3 either.

Then there was a loud noise that started so I shut down and restarted. Ok with the noise now, but files still aren't recognized.

My computer shop is closed now but I'll ber calling first thing in the morning. Thanks for your guidance thus far. I'll let you know my results.

Karen,

How far did you get?

To expedite matters, maybe tonight write outline of problems and sequence of attempted corrections/outcome. Maybe print out this Thread to take along with you.

Hope all goes well.

Windows Media Player 10 is loaded, but (I'm sorry) I couldn't follow your simple instructions to check what decoder under Tools/Options/DVD/Advanced. I couldn't find a DVD tab or anything with DVD in it.

So, QuickTime is back with same problems, Media Player 10 is loaded but the same message appears when trying to play a DVD. So no progress here either.

And now, PSE5 won't recognize newly created JPEGS when I open the file they are in. The icon tells me it's not being recognized asJPEG yet when I go through the Open Recently Edited menu they open up in PSE5 just fine. (Old JPEGS are fine).

I've moved through the rage to curiosity and hopefulness that I'll learn from all of this mixed up chain of events. This is a new computer (3 months old) and I have all the same software on my old one without incident.

I also thought I should be prepared and organized to tell them what symptoms I've experienced. Thx for your interest, ATR.

Karen,

Hang in there.

What about Nero 6.6? Is that back in there? If you have not, try and get that reinstalled before the Shop. And, then check out QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and the works one more time.

Hey there, ATR. It has been a while so I thought I'd fill you in on the progress (though not complete yet).

First they suspected the video card, then they thought maybe the power supply. But now it seems to be all software related.

I didn't know, and so didn't install Power DVD or Cyberlink DVD (?). What exactly is this? I understood it is some kind of software licensed DVD codecs I need to play DVDs properly? (I'm sure that's not right.)

So they installed that, reinstalled Windows and so far, so good. And they installed my new Nero 8 without incident. They found a virus and think it is playing with QuickTime which still shuts down the computer when you try to update it.

And somewhere they still get C++ errors which they think might be virus related.

Anyway, can you explain what Power DVD does and why I need it or a program equivalent? Just curious.

Thx,
Karen

Karen (videolady)

Please forgive me for not seeing your post until now. But, today's information sent me on a search mission to find the Premiere Elements Forum and in doing so I found your post.

First, I am delighted that everything is sounding good with your computer. Make sure your security programs can handle the task of blocking those viruses, etc.

CyberLink Power DVD Version 4.0 came bundled in with my earlier DVD/CD drive. Recently I purchased and installed a new DVD/CD drive that came bundled with the 5.0 version. My description is not going to do it justice, but here goes. I use it to view DVD-VIDEOs. I can even capture frames of the video with it. I think it is great. I am sure that it has more features that I have not utilized. I think that CyberLink Power DVD now has a HD version, not sure.

The question could be asked why bother watching DVD-VIDEO on the computer when you can watch it on the TV via the TV/DVD player. For me, it is just another option that can be convenient at times.

Your question renewed by thoughts about the Power DVD software. I need to check out the manual to see what I have not been using.

Continued success. So happy that you posted what is happening with your issues.
