View Full Version : Changing Patterns in PSE6

Was playing with this weeks Homework and ran into something in PSE6 that seems a little odd. When you apply a pattern (with the paint bucket or a pattern fill layer) and you want to change patterns you click the arrow and you get a list of options. The patterns that came with Elements show up but I thought that I could load new patterns from there but the boxes for load, save, preset manager etc are all grayed out.

I haven't been a big pattern user but I'm sure these options were active in previous versions. Am I doing something wrong or has something changed in PSE6. Only way I could get a new pattern was to go back to the preset manager and load a new one from there which seems a long way round. A PSE6 bug or just user error

Hi Tony,

I just tried the patterns and found the same situation. The ability to load patterns is greyed out. I was able to copy a pattern set from 5.0 to 6.0 and it appeared in the patterns but I had to go to 5.0 and copy to 6.0 and then reopen 6.0. Seems like a rather difficult way to go about it. I'm hoping someone will come up with a simple answer. I hadn't noticed this yet.

Susan: Thanks for checking and confirming that I wasn't alone :). Something is odd as I'm sure it shouldn't be this way. Hopefully someone will be along who can explain what's going on.

Tony,

After my laptop is finished its virus scan, I'll check it out. Definitely sounds like a bug if you can load them through the Preset Manager but not through the Patterns interface.

I just double check (have both 5 and 6 on my laptop). In 5.0 you can definitely load patterns using a fill layer, or the paint bucket fill, or the Preset Manager. I think it is a bug.
(Besides, if they keep taking away capabilities, I'm gonna stick with 5.)

Trish: Thanks for checking - it definitely looks like a bug. The other fly-out menus (if that's what they're called) for brushes and gradients seem to be OK. It's just the pattern one that's broke. Now to figure out how to describe it in a bug report.
