View Full Version : Photo corruption

Has anyone seen photo corruption occur within the organizer of PSE5? It's happened about three times sporadically over the past couple months and comes in the form of the image being split horizontally, and one portion of that split becomes discolored. It affects the thumbnail as well as the original photo file.
I have a Nikon D40, so I'm not sure if it's the original photo, PSE or perhaps Vista doing the damage. Any help would be great. I've had two permanently corrupted, and have since started leaving everything on my SD card for safety.

You link/photo didn't make it into your posting.
Have you tried opening the corrupted photos in another program to see if the are really corrupted? Try opening with either Paint or Windows Picture and Fax viewer Right click the file and choose the program you want to open the picture instead of letting PSE open it.

I think I fixed that picture link from my previous post... but yes.. I've tried opening the photo file in other programs. Whatever corruption is happening hits the original file and damages it on the fly. It's really strange.

Are you by any chance noticing any other strange behaviors on your PC?

kyuss,
I still do not see the link for your photo in this thread.
I have seen one case on someone else's system that based on your description might be similar and I will be checking on her current status today. She might have PSE4 but this is the first time that I have seen anyone post a similar problem for any PSE version in these forums or in the forums at the Adobe site. I think that she has Windows XP.
So it would help to see your photo and I will ask for a sample of one of her bad photos.

I am having I think the same problem with my pictures: see 2 posted below...

At first I thought it was my compact flash card but I tried in my son's computer & they are all fine on his. I think it maybe the drive that you put the card in the computer. There is some kind of corruption. After we started having the problem, my husband redid the computer like when we purchased it within the last 2 weeks & my current pictures are doing the same thing again. We were also having problems with the wireless keyboard & mouse & HP recently replaced these with new ones under warranty. I will probably have to call them about this problem too. Anyone have any suggestions that would be helpful.
Thanks Christell

Well I tried attaching my sample pic one more time, but the corrupted files look just like yours Christellf. And I have another thread going about my Adobe Photo Downloader crashing upon photo import... I wonder if this is all related to my SD reader? It's a cheap USB one. I will try ditching that and connect my camera directlt to USB to see if it happens again.

That is some of the strangest stuff I've seen... not only is the color distorted, but the image is "broken" at the same point -- shifted to one side.
I don't have a clue!

I don't have a clue either but I have seen some reports of faulty USB devices/drivers causing JPEG corruption. Some seemingly unrelated to the device you're saving the jpeg to so it does sound as though such things might be computer hardware/software related rather than a specific problem with Elements.

I don't know how it happens either. However, I have a few images that I recovered from an old CF card (after the images where deleted by the camera), which look similar. Those seem to be combinations of two or more images. I would try reformatting the card.

I generally connect my camera directly to my PC to download pictures so have not seen that type of corruption myself either. I did have a USB device just suddenly die on me without any previous indication of errors, though. And my daughters camera quit downloading at one time and she ended up having to get a card reader.
And I have a friend here at work that just had a hard drive go bad and it caused all sorts of weird issues with his PC until he figured it out. Luckily he has a RAID system configured and all he had to do was swap drives.
Another reason to make sure you have backups!!!!

I, too, am having the same problem. I have a new HP Vista computer and am using PSE5. I have had this problem on both my Nikon D50 and my Panasonic digital.

Check my thread in 'pixel Hangout forum. "New Stuff-Big problems". With me it has been happening since I got Vista and or my new HP computer and or PSE6. My corruption looks a little different most likely because of the different cameras I am using, ( Canon 30D 40D ) It is also happening more frequently then you describe and it is now happening on PSE5 as well as
PSE6. I have used the slot reader in the tower as well as a card reader. It would seem the problem is either PSE6, HP, or Vista and not the camera or card readers. I hope we can get this resolved. I'm losing lots of good photos

To help.: Everybody should never reformated the SDcard or CFcard on a PC ...only on your camera option format ..that will fix your problem for sure :-)

I haven't seen any more corrupt photos since I stopped using the SD reader. I've been plugging my D40 directly in with the USB cable it came with. Also, I no longer have the Adobe Photo Downloader crash after download. So hopefully this is resolved (for me) and is to blame on a cheap SD reader from CompUSA. Certainly if I get another corrupt photo I'll post back. Good luck to the others having problems. It's always worth experimenting by using a different interface, especially with Vista!

to answer from kyuss,
It will work right from the usb cable plug from the camera but they say at the first version of digital camera around 2004 ( it not yours ) that using the process. of the camera often for d/l the pictures to your HD files could make it older faster !
Try to not formated from the PC and it should work with a regular SD reader and make breath to your Nikon process or Canon !:)

It has nothing to do with Elements. Its just lost data that are mixed.
In other word: The file is simply broken, and there is not much to do.
Seen it before, yes. Take a look here:
In the forth row (Heading: "Half in PE2") is an example where the corrupted
file could be recovered, but only if it was in the upper half side.
http://home1.stofanet.dk/photo/recovery.html
IMPORTANT: Someone said: Try open in Windows Fax Viewer.
The problem is that Windows Fax Viewer do not always display
the image but having its data from cache.
Benny,
PS. Organizer and stuff like that is something that I never use.
EDIT About the above page link.
"Half in PE2"
1. In the forth row was an example where the thumb show up an okay icon.
2. The Windows Fax Viewer shows nothing (failure).
3. PSE Show up the half of that image.
So it the motiv could be cropped in the upper halv, then nothing was lost,
thats even both the Windows thumbnail, and the Fax Viewer said "Photo is lost, ha ha..."
Btw. Don't wonder about my better English on that very old Homepage (not used anymore). Thats because I got some help with the english language from a friend of mine :)

I am still not sure if this problem is the CF card. I think it has something to do with Vista or a drive on computer.. These 3 examples below show what the problem is. These are showing up after I have already completed & saved these from PSE5. They were fine when I completed them & now after I was looking back at some I did, this is how they are showing up. When I click to open them The message pops up..."This document has been damaged by a disc error. Open anyway?
When I open this is how they look.
I need help. I don't want all my photos & creations to do this. Once they are messed up I can't fix or get them back.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Christell,
how much ram you have ?
and the cpu speed and HD ... gig ?
you d/l your pictures from the camera with a cable ?
Or in a card reader ...?
And if you hav the cd install of PSE5 you could try to reinstall the soft on the HD !;)
P.S. what is the king and model of camera you use for your photos ?

I am still not sure if this problem is the CF card.
It seems that you havn't read this one of my old pages:
http://home1.stofanet.dk/photo/recovery.html
:)
Your photos doesn't look as typical from HD failure.
Anyhow, I don't uderstand why you are using a CF card for your final images, because thats a bad idea (you now know why).
Solution:
Format the CF card when its empty. Format it in you camera.
(You could format it in Windows, use the FAT type, not FAT32).

Benny, I still don't think it is my CF cards. It started when we got VISTA. It is happening on several of my cards all at the same time. Most cards don't all go bad at the same time These 3 examples I showed, the pictures were fine when I did these creations & saved them they were still fine. I did these creations at least a month ago. It was not till I looked at them yesterday & the corruption showed up on my whole creation.
Our computer is less than 6 months old & we have plenty of space. We have external hard drive that I keep stuff on so I know it is not clogged up.
I tried putting CF card on my son's computer & the photos come out fine on his computer (Windows XP)
That is why I think it is something with VISTA.
Thanks

Christell, I completely agree with you regarding your cards, especially with the indisputable evidence that the photos download to another computer. I would save the contents of all the cards to your son's computer and then onto CD's or DVD's while this issue gets resolved. This sure looks like Vista not playing nice with Adobe Photo Downloader....

There is a Vista update for PSE5 on Adobe.com
Strange problem
Benny,
PS. Don't use any Vista malware...

I was still having problems getting corrupt photos so I finally called HP technical support today. The first lady didn't help after hanging on the phone with her for a long time & got cut off. I retried & got another service person. After explaining it all over again to him. He had me try this below & so far it seems to work after I put the CF card back in & viewed the pictures & they seem all ok. So hopefully these steps will help others having corrupted photos.
If it continues to happen then this might not help but I am crossing my fingers.
Shut your computer down. After it shuts down completely, pull the hard drive out of slot & unplug the main power plug at top in back of the hard drive. While it is still unplugged, hold down the front power button for 5-10 seconds. He said it is Power cycling & refreshing the system. After the 10 seconds if finished, plug back in the power plug in top back of hard drive and restart you computer.
You will have to go & delete all the corrupted pictures because you can't fix them unless you still have them on your card or backed up from somewhere else.
I am off now to take some pictures & hopefully they will all be ok. If not I will be pulling my hair out.

So far I have sent my camera back to Canon and my computer back to HP. I have also purchased a new Sandisk card reader. I reformat cards in the camera every time. HP claimed that the computer checked out with no problems but I'm still having problems. My computer has three gigs of Ram and my hard drive has five hundred gigs with loads of empty space. I am fearful of loading any important photos because of the occasional corruption. In addition I have another problem. When scrolling through the organizer and clicking onto a photo the photo will not pop into focus. All I can do at that point is shut down the computer and start over again. At this point I am relatively sure that my problem is either with Adobe or Vista. I guess my next shot will be to call Adobe and see if that gets me anywhere.

Has anybody tried downloading the pictures using Windows Explorer? Then doing a >Get Photos from File and Folders. If that works the problem would be some incompatibility between Vista and the Adobe Downloader.

This solution Hp Technical assistance said to do above did not help my corrupted photo problem. I tried taking about 40 new pictures & put them on computer & more were corrupted again. I stayed on the phone again yesterday most of the morning with man trying to walk me through different things to check. I have tried my CF card, my husband's CF card, jump drive, & USB jump shot drive. Pictures get corrupted no matter which method I try. He had me use the front USB port & the Back USB port & they still are corrupted. I do not download my pictures from Adobe Downloader. The pictures are all fine on my son's computer (Windows XP) The minute we transfer them to our computer the corruption is seen when the file is opened immediately before I even get a chance to transfer them to MY Picture folder in My Documents. I am convinced it has something to do with VISTA.
Go to microsoft.com & click on Windows Vista. There is a Vista discussion group. In search, put in corrupted photos & see how many people are having the same problem. Also Google: Windows Vista & corrupted photos & see what comes up. This is not an isolated incident. Everything was fine until we got this new computer & it had Windows Vista on it. It is very dissapointing. Someone said to make sure & backup my picture file but they are corrupted the minute they get on computer. Once they are corrupted you can't fix the photo except to delete it. We have resorted to putting them on our son's computer first & then putting them on ours not to lose our good photos. I guess my next step would be to contact Microsoft & see if any solution.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey, I just did a quick google search, and found this:
To update everyone, I turned off offline files in Vista and the
corruption appears to have been fixed. Hopefully this will be the end
of the problem.
He didn't say how to turn off offline files, though.

We just tried this & still have corrupted pictures. We checked Vista support on website & it said you have 3 months support to call in. After that you have to pay for support. Ours is 6 months old & i wish we would have stuck with Windows XP especially because both of us take alot of digital pictures.
