Sorry to be off the subject but I know that many area of the country are not aware of the horrible wild fires we are having right now in San Diego. Many of the news stations are just telling about Malibu. In San Diego County we have evacuated over 250,000 people so far and have had over 100,000 acres burn. Basically there are fires burning from the Mexican border up to the northern areas of our county. They are saying this fire is by far a lot worse then the fires we had in 2003. Our stadium is an evacuation point along with fair grounds and many other spots around the county. Luckily we have had only one person die and 14 - 20 people hurt. Our evacuation system (reverse 911) is working well. When people are told to leave they are leaving. Unfortuately with the winds in some areas gusting up to 70 mph the firefighters are having terrible times just staying in front of it. In many neighborhood they are just having to let houses burn to try and save others. Where I live in Lakeside, we have been extremely lucky, hardly any wind and the closest fire is 20 miles away. They don't expect the winds to die down until Wednesday and many of the fires are still 0% contained. Many of the open areas where there are no homes will just have to burn themselves out, we are stretched to thin to try and cover everything. San Diego will survive just have we have in the past.

Litespeed, thanks very much for the update. One of our regular contributors - Sherry, aka Jazzfisher - has been evacuated from her home in Encinitas, which I just learned is north of San Diego. What a horrible situation - our hearts and prayers go out to all affected Californians.

Michelle, that's so much for a young person - any person for that matter - to endure....

Hi Litespeed,

I just saw the video on the news and I was stunned at the arieal shots. Those were the most intense flames I have ever seen. It seems like lava flows in some areas.

You're right, I didn't have a clue about the extent of San Diego's damage.

My heart goes out to you and your community. It's amazing, it seems large cities rally and become very much like small towns in circumstances like these. If not, come up to Northern California... We'd be happy to take care of you!
