View Full Version : Content of 'paid for' Tutorials

With all good intentions over the last month or so a lot of the information in these tutorials has made it to the forums- in answer to various problems. OK But are we in danger of stopping the tutorials being written? Who is going to pay if they know the info will appear on the forums anyway?
Will the content of future tutorials be written in the knowledge it will be released anyway?
I can honestly say I have learnt more from them than all the books, so would like more, and possibly in more depth, but is it likely to happen if no-one buys them?
This isn't what we in England call 'sour grapes' I don't mind giving the info out, so long as the authors don't.

Chris,
My thoughts are that no matter what the subject, each teacher has a slightly different presentation of the material and each seems to put more emphasis on one item than another. I find that even after several classes essentially on the same subject, I always come away knowing a little more than when I started.

Tuts have tremendous value over this forum even when there is duplicate info. This forum provides point an time, one at a time bytes of information and tuts give you a comprehensive, structured presentation that speeds your education and will alway have value over just Q&A.
I don't think the folks at PET would be creating TUTs AND support the forum, if there wasn't a few dollars in the deal :) I know they are wonderful at what they do, but I believe they are "for profit."
Heck PSE4 is going to put more $ in Kelby's pocket alone when he comes out with his new book that will primarily tell us everything we picked up in older books + how to exploit PSE4. I could apply the same logic to books as the tuts...
One other point, PET continues to provide free tuts for the subscribers and I don't see them going away. They are just bait to real us into all the advanced/good stuff in the paid package.
IMHO, we're safe. I don't think we're endangering any more paid tutorials.

I believe if anything our discussing the tutorials on the forum make people who aren't subscribers want to know more about what we are talking about and want to join! There are lots of "free" tutorials on the net, BUT we still are all paid subscribers aren't we?? It gives us something to look forward to. It brings us closer together.
If I were to go to a site and do a tutorial and then tell the group, gee look what I created.......hey go here and do it yourself, it just wouldn't be the same. This way we are 'all on the same page". If anything I think it gets us more addicted and the PET people don't have to sell their product, WE DO, to everyone who asks, "is it worth it". Go read some of those previous posts and I believe you will find that that is the case.

I've wrestled with the same thought quite a bit. To be honest I still haven't come to a decision.
I do tend to agree with Pauline. I kind of think of it as a plus/minus thing. Just hopefully the plus (more people subscribing because of our discussions) outweighs the minus (less people subscribing because we tell them stuff).
There is also the ..if you like it, support it, mentality. While I can't change the world on that one, I can do my part, and support it. :D :D

Chris,
As a brand new beginner in PSE-3 (or any PS program) I find the forums and Q & A's some what hard to digest. The tutorials give me hands on experience with various tools, concepts etc that the forums do not do. It gives the beginner like myself some confidence that eventually some thing will click and who knows what could happen. Possibly the "powers to be" could structure their TUT'S to various levels from beginners to say super advanced students. I find that they are fine just the way they are. IMHO I don't think that the producers will hold back on info. It is to their advantage to keep every one up to speed . The new business base that Adobe picked up with PSE-3 and now PSE-4 is a huge pot of gold (future students) for PS Techniques Producers.

Hi Edmund ...
I do agree with you about the tutorials giving hands on experience of tools and concepts that the forum cannot do!
It is just so much easier to pick something up when you can actually see someone doing it ... thats why I do online classes too. I still find myself watching them and saying "Well I never thought of that".
Hope you are enjoying the classes ... I am :)

Some very good points Edmund. Don't worry about not understanding a lot of stuff on the forum. Before you know it, you will be up to speed and joining along. There are a lot of us new comers to pse (I got mine in Feb.)
The best advice I could give is to do the tutorials, spend some time on the classes and you will be up to speed in no time. This site helps you learn quickly and there is lots and lots of help, so don't be too shy to ask.

I think that one very benefical point that should be made is that wether you are a newbie or your memory has slowed down (aging I hope) you will find that the ability to run the tutorials simultaniously while working the project in PSE is an invaluable aid. Run the video, minimize it, work that part of the project, minimize PSE, run additional video. This gives you the opportunity to work and learn, correct mistakes, at your own pace.

The tutorials give me hands on experience with various tools, concepts etc that the forums do not do...Edmund,
What I think you are missing about the Forums is that they provide a means of sharing problems, ideas and your work with other Elements users. No matter whether you are a newbie or seasoned expert, you'll probably find someone else here who has the same question or problem and several people who will give as much help as you want to answer it... All you have to do is ask...
You may not have picked this up but Dave Cross, Matt K, Tami and Bruce all regularly visit and contribute to the forums. Also, there have been four occasions I know of where Subscriber tutorials have resulted directly from questions or comments on the Forums. This is without doubt the best Elements site and there aren't many (or any?) sites out there where you'll get that level of interaction with the "experts" - at no cost!! Ring Adobe and see how much they want to talk to you!!

Wendy I'm fine with a computer and with computer issues and problems but what I can't seem to manage very well are the remotes for TV and all the other things connected to it -- all that button pushing is beyond me, I don't even watch TV. I spend most of my time on my computer, this forum, and digital editing -- not to mention one computer game.

Christmas Cakes are a beautiful memory for me from my Canadian past. Of course wedding cakes were also fruit cake with almond icing and were made by loving hands well ahead of the wedding. I was living in California when I got married and was struck dumb when I went into the bakery to order my wedding cake and they asked me if I wanted white or chocolate cake. Definitely didn't feel like a real wedding cake! :(
My sister in Victoria, B.C. takes pity on me each Christmas and sends me a cake. :)

OH--a fruit cake, like the traditional one that gets mailed from one person to another around America--cause nobody eats the ones made in America. They are dry & use that candied fruit. Yuck!! ----I'm sure yours are completely different. They make wedding cakes like that too????
Wendy
October 1st, 2005, 07:51 PM
Hi Sherry ...
Well they are a very rich fruit cakes but they are not dry ... they are full of Christmas spices like Cinnamon and Mixed Spice then liberally laced with Brandy. We don't tend to put Candied fruit in them except a little candied peel. Usually they are made 2 to 3 months in advanced and topped up regularly with Brandy over the months. Then they have almond paste put onto them before they are iced with Royal icing ...
... Wedding Cakes are made in the same way.
