Great day for butterflies in Houston! Here's a Gulf Fritillary - similar to the one posted by Smiles last week but not as nice as hers...

Chuck, nice butterfly. I am always amazed by the colors produced by nature.

Well done, Chuck. Did you take it with your P&S? Great depth of field.

Trish, thanks. Yes, I did take it with P&S (Canon G7). I let the camera choose the aperture and shutter speed because I was in a hurry to grab the shot before the subject moved on. Wound up with ISO 100, f 4.8, 1/640 second (exposure compensation -1/3). Fortunately, the camera also picked the butterfly as the AF point; not sure how it did that but I'm going to figure it out....:)

Really nice Chuck. And so nice to know a point and shoot did it. I always assumed I would have to upgrade my camera before attempting things like this....now I might start to experiment with my point and shoot and try other things besides kids and landscapes.:)

Toni, thanks. Most P&S cameras are really good at macro photos; they have inherently more depth of field than DSLR's, so it's not so difficult to get a sharp image.

One tip for capturing butterflies: get out early in the morning. They seem sluggish at first, but as the sun gets higher in the sky and they warm up they begin flitting a whole lot faster. Had a lot of rejects where the wings were in motion or, due to the shutter lag of P&S camera, the butterfly was gone by the time the shutter actually fired....
