I am archiving my first project (archive not copy) and I have a few questions.

Do I have to archive to a folder and then save to DVDs because I get an error message when trying to archive directly to DVDs.

So I saved to a folder and now am trying to put on a DVD via Nero Start Smart using Nero BackItUp, but I get a message:
'There is not enough free space available for compression. Please make sure you have free space equal to 1.28GB in the temp folder.'

It is a 25 minute video all with photos and music, no video. I have PSE5/PE3.

I'm not sure what else you may need to know to help me so I may need to add info yet.

Karen W,

I will be back tomorrow with the details of my recent first encounter with that Archiver and saving to a DVD disc and.....I need to point out and clarify a significant portion of the detail in the help on that one.

We should be able to iron out the wrinkles.

Karen,

There are multiple people over at the muvipix.com forums who have used the Archiver. So if I had a question about that function, I would check at

http://muvipix.com/home.php

Forum signup is free, just as it is here.

Karen W,

Sorry, I did not answer your question in my last post, but it was after midnight where I am and thought it best to wait until the light of day to answer.

Of course there all sorts of ways/approaches for Archiving (systems for doing this, saving as DV AVI, on tape, etc) , some of which can be found at the site that Grisetti/Engels et al. promote, http://www.muvipix.com. The following is a sampling:

http://videoinasnap.chuckengels.com/source/guest/gueststars.htm

http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=965

Too, Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe http://www.adobe.com is a major resource for all sorts of information. Not to be overlooked is the views of the people at this forum.

All that being said, often we can be of help here. In that context, I am responding to your specific question on using the Project Archiver in Premiere Elements.

1. In using Archiver instead of Copy option, you realize that basically you will end up with your material on the Timeline and only the media used in that Timeline in the Media Panel.

2. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremiereElements/4.0/help.html?content=WS09e4b3c48f3a79fc19b622510385d4 355c-7dca.html

This link is for Premiere Elements 4, but it has a good view of the Project Archiver dialog. Make sure you check out
Under Disc Space Category
Disc Space
Original Project Size
New Saved Project Size
Make sure you check these figures out to make sure that they are compatible with DVD disc capacity when and if you burn the Archives Project folder to DVD.

3. With my Premiere Elements 2, I have found that I have to generate the folder and then burn the folder to DVD. I cannot burn directly to DVD disc in the drive or a jump drive in the USB hub. Refer to the “idea” note in the Premiere Elements 4 link above and see if it applies to Premiere Elements 3 (seems to suggest that you can burn to a portable hard drive)

4. After you burn the folder to DVD and later want to use it to open the saved project in Premiere Elements, you will need to locate the appropriate file (in your case, it probably says “Trimmed_Untitled”)

5. I also have found that, when I open an archived project in Premiere Elements 2, I have to Render it by pressing Enter in the Edit Mode (red line above video track….green) before continuing.

This is getting too long, so, if I left anything out, please let me know. I am curious as to the figures that you got in that Project Archiver dialog.

Thx for your indepth reply. I have read some of these other posts but there has been a death in the family and it might be a few days until I can find time to give proper attention. I will certainly be back here though as soon as I can and reply.

Thx,
Karen

OK, ATR, I'm back and ready to try this again. I have sucessfully archived to a folder a Trimmed copy of my work in a separate folder. I go to Nero BackItUp to copy the folder to a DVD and that's where my confusion begins.

I think you use Nero yourself so I'm hoping you can explain the process. I don't want to give the step-by-step process I have used to no avail because it's probably completely the wrong way, but it was via NeroBackItUp. Is this the wrong section? Should I use Nero Express>DVD Video Files or some other route?

Just to be clear, I want to be able to download this project back into PE3 in the future to add more at the end or move the 6 sections into a different order. Plus i need to take it off my hard drive for more space to move on to the next project.

Hi Karen,

I am so excited, like a kid in a candy store. As I type I am downloading the tryout version Photoshop Elements 6.0 from the Adobe web site. I just found it this evening. Unfortunately, Premiere Elements 4.0 was not listed, so I will have to wait to try the two of them together.

But, your archiving....

I have Nero 6.6 version with updates....
If you use the Nero Start Smart Interface
Set the top to DVD
Go to the "Data" icon
And then click on "Make Data DVD" with your DVD disc in the DVD drive.

If you use the Nero Express Interface
You will see "What would you like to burn?"
Select "Data" and then "Data Disc"
Follow the instructions, make sure your sets are OK for your 4.7 GB disc if your version has a set for DVD disc capacity types.

The trick (or what I did not realize the first time), when you want to use the archived material, you put your DVD disc in the drive and then click on the folder that says something like "Trimmed_Untitled". That should open up your project in Premiere Elements with your material on the Timeline and the media used in the Timeline in the Media Panel. After conforming, I had to render the Timeline material by pressing Enter in Edit Mode.

Hope that works OK for you. Maybe try it on a mini run.

I am off to post my tryout find in the General Forum.

Good luck and please let me know how this turns out.

Karen W,

I was just about to call it a night or early morning, when I re-read your last post.

I still have to address your last sentence/question.

To be continued...

Karen,

These are my after thoughts...

Saving Considerations & Flexibility..

You burn your archived folder to DVD-R (multisessions mode) using Make A Data Disc with Nero.
When you revisit the archived project and have it open on the Timeline/Media Panel, you make additions and/or edits, and want to save.
With this route, you can only save the edited project to another location. The system will not let you update (write to) the original folder on the DVD-R disc.
However, you can archive the edited version and add it to the original archived version already on disc which will then contain archive version 1 as well as 2. This way you could have the continuous series of archived versions.

The other plan which I often use is this.
Turn a DVD+RW into a "large floppy disc"
Put a DVD+RW into the drive, go to Windows Explorer, right click the drive, and select InCD format.
Once the DVD+RW is InCD formatted, leave it in the drive.

When you archive your project, save it to the InCD formatted disc. NO ARCHIVER. This becomes your removable disc (so to speak). So, now when you edit, your edits will be upgraded in the folder. You can also add more archived versions if you want to. Windows Explorer is a big help in managing these folders.

These thoughts are specific to the Premiere Elements Archiver. Of course, there are other ways of saving your projects, ex. DV AVI and bypassing the Archiver feature, but you do not have the benefits of the archiver system perks.

Check out these thoughts to see if they hold together for your purposes.

Clarity point...

In the first section that reads....
"However, you can archive the edited version and add it...."

Better written...
"However, you can take the just archived edited project (from saved location) and burn it...."

I've tried a few times with some success and I'm sure you would much rather be playing with your trial PSE6 than help further (how is it?!), but here is what has happened thus far.

There are 9 seperate sections in my final project. I created each one individually as its own prel file first. Then I exported each one as an avi file and brought them together as one prel file and burned it.

Now to archive: In PE3, I archived this final prel file with 9 avi files within it. In Nero, I followed your great directions and burned to DVD (it took 2 discs with half of the avi files on each disk). This is SUCCESS and feels terrific. I brought the avi files in to PE3 Media Panel from the discs and was able to put on the timeline just fine.

But, thinking further, I realize I wouldn't be able to make any changes within any avi section. (Although I can rearrange section order or add new sections at the end!)

So, I tried again, this time archiving each individual section's prel file. This was worthless because when I opened the disc back up and brought these into PE3, all it had was each photo in a 5 second interval in the media panel.

I think I am archiving the wrong file type because you mentioned you brought your project into the timeline and had to render it again. I don't even have any effects or transitions. Or maybe I'm not bringing the project back into PE3 properly.

You didn't realize you are teaching a kindergarten student, did you?!

Karen,

Trying to help you comes first always, and I am going to gather up your details and see what is happening. My motto is there is no such thing as a bad question, except maybe when it comes to age or weight!! I am grateful for the opportunity to explore and learn.

As for Photoshop Elements 6, I have been working on the integration angle of it with Premiere Element 4. Unfortunately, the tryout for PE4 is not available yet, so my PE2 is struggling as a substitute for PE4. I was just about to post my comments on PE6 wmv profiles. Hope they do not charge me by the word since it is my usual long version. No more PSE6 until sometime tomorrow or the next day.

Meet you back at the Thread soon.

I took a rest and came back to try and figure this out from my end. Ultimately, everything is fine.

It's hard for me to remember exactly each step I took and the order I did them as well. But I reopened the DVD where I saved the 'Trimmed.prel' files, saved them to a folder and then opened in PE3 and everything is fine with the red render line there waiting for me to hit enter!!!

Somehow I have files in another folder I created to test all of this that have numbers for names like 2007 10 23, 2002 08 20, etc and these are what I used when I ended up with just 5 second clips of each photo used.

I am thinking I need to open and save the archived DVD files (Trimmed...prel) to a folder first before opening in PE3. Either way, I am SOOOOO satisfied that I have conquered this whole archiving thing. It's just a matter of fine tuning my steps!

THX so much. You came to the rescue once again.

Karen,

I was about to rejoin the Thread when I saw your last post.

So glad that it worked out OK. I was going to ask more questions and go over the route to make sure that we were following along with each other. It is so very good when a plan comes together.

Keep up the good work.
