I can not save or exit....I have exactly 4 layers, bg, bgc, level, & hue/sat. I want to save as and move on to the next file, but I can't close. I have tried clicking on the x for both the edit window and closing the program and neither respond. I have tried file, edit, view with nothing responding. Any suggestions? I do not want to use the task manager as I will lose my work and it does indicated the PSE5 is up and running....
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Patti

I really have no idea but just an off chance... hit your enter key.
Maybe something is still waiting for confirmation?

Just a guess. What file format are you saving in? Some formats will not let you save with open layers, they should be merged.
Or try to drag into a new document and save the new copy under a different name.

Thanks Gary, but that isn't working either. I don't understand this program and I am about to give up. I increased to the max amount of memory and still can get passed 4layers and the program stops. This is an ongoing problem, and one that makes me believe that I should just give up on Photo Shop all together. Does anyone know of phone support? pk

Patti... Don't despair yet. I'm using all sorts of heavy graphics programs on a prehistoric PC with just 1GB of memory, and never had any problems like this. So I'm pretty sure it's not the memory that's giving you trouble.
Just a wild guess here - but have you checked to see that you've confirmed any transformations to your image and deselected all selections before attempting to save? Does this happen to other images too, or just this one? EDIT: Kimi, I just saw you'd already mentioned the confirmation of changes... ;)
Or maybe the PSE installation has got corrupt somehow and you need to reinstall it? And perhaps your antivirus is interfering with the program - try disabling it temporarily, while you're NOT connected to the Internet, and see if you are able to save your project... :)

Maria,
Thanks for the encouraging words of support. I closed the program with task manager, lost the work, tried again and the program shut down with one of the error messages to says sorry for the inconvenience....I am starting to think it is the program.
I have had this problem every time I try to use layers. I can play all I want and make changes, filters etc, but once I move into using layers, the program fails. I have been hesitant about reinstalling, but maybe I should go that route since I increase the memory. Can’t hurt since it not working anyway. Thanks again. Will let you know what happens.

:) You're most welcome... I hope you manage to solve the problem soon, I know how annoying and frustrating these things can be.
To eliminate some more possibilities - because computers are mysterious machines, have you made sure that the memory you've added is read correctly by the system? You can check this if you right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and go to Properties --> General. There you can see the total RAM that is recognised by the system. Is that consistent with what it's supposed to be?
Oh, and something else I just thought of - what file types are the photos you are editing? Before opening them in PSE, try converting them to JPEG if they aren't already (a freeware viewer/editor like IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) or XnView (http://www.xnview.com/) can do that very easily) and see what happens... :)

One other thing to try before you do anything drastic.
Reset the preferences.. hold CTRL>ALT>SHIFT all at the same time as you start the editor (either from the splash screen or straight out). When you get the popup asking to reset the preferences, pick yes.
