View Full Version : Unknown Error writing to DVD disc

Everytime I try to burn a DVD, everything goes fine until the very end of the burn. The DVD then ejects and the following error is displayed:
"Unknown Error 2131110144" and that's it. I then have to cancel the burn (no other choice).
The process goes along fine... redering completes and the burning begins. The burning process proceeds fine and I can hear/see the DVD drive writing info onto the disc. At the very last part where the blue line gets within a hair of the end of the time block, the drive writes some more info, then ejects the disc and the error displays. If I put the disc into explorer, no files show on the disk... it appears empty.
I read the (7) troubleshooting questions by Steve Grisetti and everything checks out.
I've created a really simple move... two clips that total about 15 seconds with no modifications, effects, titles, or anything else to make sure it isn't something the software or I am doing. The two clips are from Premier 4's samples, so theat should not be a problem.
My drive is a Sony DVD RW DRU-710-A. I upgraded the latest firmare from their site. There is plenty of space on my hard drive and the DVD's are Maxell DVD-R which I've used for other applications (DVD slide shows with Memories on TV).
So far, I've ruined about 8 of these trying different things and then burning to the DVD. The result is the same every time. And once the error occurs, each DVD is ruined and cannot be reused.
Please help me with this. I am a new Premier user and just got a new camera and would really like to get this to work the way it is supposed to.
I have not yet tried to write the movies to hard disk and then use another software to srite to the DVD. I don't want to do this unless I have to. I bought this software so that it would do it for me.

I experienced the same problems. I also have a Sony, not the same model because my particular unit was not made by Sony but carries the Sony name (I found that out when I tried to upgrade the firmware). My error message was probably the same but who keeps track.
I know that these drives are rated +/-. They seem to work fine with the CD- but forget the DVD-. For DVD burning use the DVD+. Sure you can get some burns with the DVD- but maybe one out of 10 and the frustration, well you know what that is costing you! I bought a cheap pack of RW DVD+ Office Depot brand and had no problem. I did not want to spend much if it was a drive issue. Since then I bought a top notch brand, Taiyo Yuden DVD+ and they work great. These may cost fifty cents a piece but consider that cost of the Maxwell coasters you have generated.
I purchased these at http://www.supermediastore.com. I would suggest that you first buy some inexpensive DVD+ to see if it solves your problem. Move up to the Taiyo Yuden if you want to be sure you always get a good burn. Whatever you do get the DVD+.
Let me know if that cures the problem.

Ed,
I second Joe's suggestion for your to try a DVD+R and see what happens.
First. you did not say what version of Premiere Elements you are using. Nonetheless, I am going to tell you my story with DVD-R and Premiere Elements 2 (the version that I have).
From Day 1, I have run into the same problem that you described. You could still have other causes, but.....
My easy way out was to switch to a DVD disc type other than DVD-R. However, I did find two workarounds for dealing with the DVD-R:
Either one or both:
1. Put the DVD-R disc in the drive even before you open Premiere Elements
2. When you get to the Burn Dialog, hit the Rescan (even if it said Ready when you got to the Burn Dialog). When the Ready appears, repeat the procedure one more time. Then hit the Burn button.
The two together minimize my chances of getting that error message at the very end of the burn.
You will often see the pros answer this type of question with firmware update and detouring you to the burn to folder route. My firmware update was OK and I could burn to folder (if I wanted to), so I worked on this workaround which worked for me with my Premiere Elements 2.

Thanks guys,
That's good information.
I am using Preimier 4.
I did manage to write the DVD file to disk with no problems, and then used NERO to burn the files to disk. This worked perfectly, even with a much more complicated project. The DVD came out great and displayed very nicely on my 46" LCD TV.
I'm very pleased with the camera and the software.
I will get some of the DVD +R discs and see if that cures the problem in Premier.
In any case, thanks for the very helpful feedback.

I prefer to write to the hard drive and then use Nero. However I could not even get Nero to write to the DVD-. Tried a couple of different brands with the same result. Glad to hear that you got something.

Joe,
When you were using Nero to burn just the VIDEO_TS (from burn to folder generated by Premiere Elements), were you using Create Data Disc? With the burn of the VIDEO_TS in Nero, I find that I need to use the category for Burning Video Files, not Data Disc.

I used the method described on Adobe's site. This was completely foreign to me but it worked once I tried it with DVD+ but not with DVD-. I don't have the details in front of me but I remember it had something to do with Nero Burning Rom and copying the file to a different place rather than data.

Joe,
Do you have the 2 version of Premiere Elements?
From day 1 with that program (it has about 2 years now), I continue to have problems with the DVD-R and burning to disc unless I play with the workarounds that I mentioned previously.
I was curious if this is unique to the 2 version or if it occurs across the versions.

No, I have version 3. However my problems also extended to Nero when I would burn data disks. I burned a DVD+ data disk yesterday without a problem. That would have been impossible with DVD-.

Update...
I did as was suggested and bought some DVD +R discs, and that did the trick. The burn from within Premier 4 worked with the +R discs.
However... using NERO the burn time was a scant 2 or 3 minutes for a 1 GB movie. It took Premier4 over 30 minutes to burn the same 1 GB movie to the DVD. The drive just kept ramping up and down as if there was not enough buffer to keep the data stream going. With NERO, the buffer fills and the data stream writes from the buffer. I can visually see the buffer in NERO and it stays full until finished. I don't know what Premier 4does as far as buffering, but I'm inclined to go with burning the files to disc from now on and then using NERO to burn my discs. I think someone suggested this from the start.
Thanks again for your help, guys.

I too just experienced the "unknown error 21311110144". I am using Premiere Elements 3.0 editing some videos about the solar system and universe for my young son. I recorded using Vista's Media Center, converted the .dvr-ms file to .avi using Windows Movie Maker, edited out commercials, built a nice menu (no motion or audio - only stills for each "episode") and then burned to DVD over night only to get an unplayable disk in the morning. Burned a second DVD and got this unknown error 2131110144 message.
I checked on the Adobe forums and heard it was because I was cramming too much on a DVD - Using Sony DVD+RL. Thought that if a regular DVD can handle 120 mins should be OK with 220 on a DL (the label says 215mins/SP). Any thoughts?
I was able to burn to a 8.5gb folder but unsuccessful burning that to a disk. Selected both folders, right click and hit the "burn to disk". It wouldn't play on our Sony DVD player and on our little portable DVD player the menu didn't show up but I had video 1, video 2 and so on that I could select.
My computer came with Roxio and could not find a way to copy the the folders to a DVD without going through their movie edit/dvd titling program. My other computer has Nero so I could try that though I'll need to look up how to get clarity around the issue noted in a previous post.
Not using DVD- so that doesn't seem to be the issue. Could dual-layer/too much video be the issue? Any other thoughts?
Thanks

In the last few days I've had some of the same problems.
I have a short, about 11 minute movie, I've tried to burn to DVD. Out of about 10 tries on both DVD-R and DVD+R, 5 have failed.
I just ordered the latest version of Nero. Today I also bought some Sony DVD+R media and will try using that.
After reading this thread I'm starting to think Adobe needs to take a look at this problem.
As far as Premiere Elements 4 as a whole I just love it. It was a joy to work on my project. Other than this burn issue, this is one of the best pieces of software I have used. :)

In the Adobe Premiere Elements forum it was suggested I was having a problem because I was trying to cram to much on to a Dual Layer DVD (does anyone one know how much it should hold - the label states 215 minutes)?
As I was trying to fit 220 minutes, I re-edited it down to 180 and re-burned the DVD. The content itself was made up of four .avi files with NO transitions other than a few fade in/out audio/video between episodes. Again, nothing fancy for the menu just a still shot for the primary background and the image demarking each episode was also a still. No audio. (I've posted previously my system details if you think that might be the culprit.)
Woke up this morning and had created yet another coaster. Again, Premiere Elements had displayed a pop-up window stating, "unknown error 21311110144."
Someone has to know what this code means; it's not like PrEl works all night rendering the video, burns the DVD and in the end just gives up and randomly decides to say "JELLO." It gives a specific number and has displayed the same number to other folks commenting here and in other forums/threads.
So come on Adobe, what does the code mean? Please help us, your customers, the folks who spent good money on your program and make cool DVD's that they share with friends and family and when said friends and family say, "Cool, how'd you do that?" we gleefully say, "with this really cool program called Adobe Premiere Elements and it's really easy to use"… although with the increasing frustration the tone and specific wording may be slightly altered.
And for the record I'm the customer (sucker?) who bought Photoshop Elements 2.0, upgraded to Photoshop Elements 3.0 and then of course upgraded to Photoshop Elements 4.0 bundled with Premiere Elements 2.0 which led to my latest upgrade to Photoshop Elements 5.0 bundled with Premiere Elements 3.0 (only 6 months ago) and doesn't Adobe have a new Photoshop/Premiere Elements suite out???
Thank you for your patience and understanding... I'm off my soap box and back to scratching my head.

Have you tried burning it to your hard drive? If you have Nero you can burn it fairly quickly to a DVD. As to the error code who knows...
BTW adobe does not monitor this forum. You might want to post to their boards if you have not already done that.

Thanks Joe.
My new computer came with Roxio but my "old" computer has Nero... would it just copy the "episodes" or would it also include the menu? I "burned" the project to an 8.5gb folder and then, as I am using Vista, highlighted the two folders and clicked on the "burn to disc" feature at the top. Unfortunately, it did not create a DVD that included the menu.

I have burned to my hard drive and then used Nero to burn it to DVD. There is a special method that Adobe said to use and it did work. It will probably not work on a free version of Nero. The PDF from Adobe exceeds the file size so if you want a copy you will need to send me a private message with your email address but the same document is on Adobe's site. Your search criteria in adobeforums.com "How do I burn a disk after using Premiere Elements to burn my DVD to a folder?"
It does burn your menu and everything related to the video.

Thanks Joe, I'll give that a try but it is the free version of Nero that came with my Dell but it's worth a try (worse case scenario I wind up with a complete set of coasters). Also, I did come across that post on the Adobe forum.

Joe M,
The choice of Nero may turn out OK, but...
Be on guard, Nero is notorious for grabbing, not sharing, and messing up other software.
Just remember, when you take your the Premiere Elements "burn to folder" folder from it saved location on the hard drive, you are going to use Nero and JUST the VIDEO_TS folder to get the DVD-VIDEO. You do NOT use Create Data Disc. Find the setting for burn video files. After the burn, you will have your project in DVD-VIDEO format on your DVD disc. Make sure that your TV/DVD player supports the type of disc used (-R, +R, etc).
I have Nero 6.6. The route that I use is as follows:
Nero Express 6 Interface
What would you like to use?
Make sure it is set to the DVD burner, important if you have CD one as well)
What would you like to do?
DVD-Video Files
When you get to "Add", open until you can select JUST the Video_TS folder.
Those are the critical steps, follow the instructions as you go.
Please let us know the outcome.

I had a chance to look over your posts here and even went back to see what you asked and what suggestions were given at the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe:
"Problem burning DVD - unknown error 2131110144"
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.3c052b4f/0
Not too much to add...., but....
First about these forums....the forum here and the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe are serviced by free suggestions by users. The people at the forum at the Grisetti/Engels site http://www.muvipix.com are essentially the same people that you will run into at the forum at Adobe. None of these forums is serviced by Adobe. Contact with and advice from Adobe comes by way of its T/S at a cost. As far as I know Adobe management does not look in on these forums. See Adobe's disclaimer over at Adobe. Here has its own corporate non-Adobe structure. So, for your comments to have impact on Adobe, best write the product manager at Adobe direct:

About your error issue:
I am just an average user; the other people who responded at the Adobe forum are the known pros. But, here are some miscellaneous:
1. If you go the Nero route, see my post to Joe M in this Thread. It is just the VIDEO_TS Folder that you are going to burn to disc using the burn video files setting of Nero. A single layer DVD will only accept one VIDEO_TS per DVD disc. I would have to do some homework to see if the double layer type will accept more than one. I have only worked with single-layer DVD.
2. Maybe I missed it, but what happens if you divide up your project onto 3 single-layer discs and use burn to single layer disc? Still, the error and no end product? In your calculations, no doubt there is more on the disc than just your video, instructions, etc.
3. True, the video time (hrs) is key, but, if you get a chance, when you get to the Burn Dialog, have your disc in the drive, look down to the Quality area, what does it say for Space Required ......MB (Bitrate......8 Mbps)
when Fit to Disc is checked and
when Fit to Disc is unchecked, slider low as well as slide high????
One practice that has its shortcomings is to lower the bitrate to fit more on a DVD. But, as you lower the bitrate, the quality declines.
I hope that you can rethink your strategy into success.

I have the same problem. I just created a 20 mins movie, with quite a few transitions and effects.
When I tried to burn it to dvd, it rendered for 1.5 hrs and started burning. It burned up to 3-5%, then it stayed at the same spot for hours. I left my computer on overnight, but the next day, the status bar was still on the same spot. Premiere was still running fine when I checked, it didn't froze or anything. I was using R-.
I have premiere element 4 and haven't tried all other suggestions. I will keep all of you posted.

One solution does not fix/fit all problems which come under the category of failure to burn to DVD with Premiere Elements, so start with the basics and work through the troubleshooting.
What operating system are you using and is it optimized? When did you defragment last? Are you running unnecessary programs in the background? Etc.
Look into the content of your slideshow. Are you using Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements integrated? What are the pixel dimensions of your stills. What is the format of any video/audio on the Timeline? What is the time of your entire slideshow? Do you have stop markers in the project, Etc.
There are a lot of avenues to follow.
Read this thread and similar ones and, if you have not solved your problem, post back with a lot of details on what you are doing. I will be watching for your progress.
Maybe start another new thread so that you issue will not get lost in this long Thread.

Thanks ATR, I followed your steps and it worked fine. I haven't used Nero in years and the number of choices and options can be confusing.
I then tried a burn directly from Premiere with the Sony DVD +R media and it was successfully completed. Just for FYI I am using a Lite-On LH-20A1P.
Just for future reference as this thread may be used by others in troubleshooting. My movie contained no menus but did have a soundtrack.
Edit again: I also turned off my screensaver so it didn't come on during the process.

Processor: Intel Centrino
OS: Windows XP
Memory: 1.25 GB
It's a two-yr old dell laptop, I defrag almost every month, I think the last time I did it was 2 wks ago. I'm not sure what do you mean by optimized OS.
Size of still pictures: approximately 1.5 MB per picture
Video Type: .MPG
Audio Type: MP3 AUDIO
Movie length: approximately 20 mins
There are no stop marker but there are few scenes marker. I didn't run any other program while running PE4.
I don't really know how to troubleshoot. If you have any guidelines, please let me know. thanks.

When I try to burn a DVD using Adobe Premiere Elements 4, I get the following message at about the 80% stage "Unknown Error 2131110144". At this point, the only option is to cancel the burn. This happens every single time I try to burn to DVD-R media. I am using a Samsung Super Write Master, +R DL, +R, -R, -RW, +RW, -RAM, burner.
My drive burns to DVD+R DL and DVD+R with absolutely no problems and 100% reliability. What the heck is up with APE 4.0?
I want to use -R media.

I think I wrote about this happening several times ago.
It started back with my Premiere Elements 2. I never did get an answer to why it was happening, but I did find a few "remedies" to Burn To Disc with those DVD-Rs. (The problem was not DVD-R brand specific).
1. Place the DVD-R disc in the drive even before you open Premiere Elements.
(That by itself may not do it.)
2. Next, open Premiere Elements. Do your work. When you get to Burn To Disc and the Burn dialog, hit the Rescan even if it displays Ready. When that is complete, hit the Rescan again even if it displays Ready. When that is complete, then hit Burn.
(Of course, make sure that you have the right DVD burner designed for use, especially if you have multiple DVD burners installed in your computer).
Give that a try and let us know if that increased the chances of getting a DVD-VIDEO on a DVD-R disc with your Premiere Elements 4.
