Can anyone help me with how to get rid of the red "stripes" running through the photo. I am using Elements 6.
Thank you
Elaine

Elaine,
This one is a bit tricky. I finally got the stripes out using Channel Mixer (part of Grant's Tools). It seems to be the green channel. Took Green to 0% and increased Red to 65% and Blue to 35%. Unfortunately, most of the color, especially on the building, got lost in the process. Masking everything but the building restored the green in the grass etc. Then I went back and colorized the building.

I am no expert at this, I hope somebody can offer an easier solution.

You did a great job on this. I am new to doing all of this. I did an internet search for Grant's tools and found what I think is the site, but am always very cautious about downloading. Can you tell me where to find it. Then I will try to follow what you are telling me to do and hope that I can come up with results half as good as yours.
Thank you so much Juergen.

Did you use Elements on this or Photoshop?

Elaine,
It was done in Elements 5.0. That's why we need Grant's Tools... :)

Best is downloading them from here:
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showpost.php?p=181276&postcount=2

It is perfectly safe!

These are the tools for V5.0, but I have it on good authority that they will work with V6.0, too. And they install in the same folder. If Tony sees this, he may be able to confirm.

Thanks Judy!

I can't find the same path to install Grants tools in Elements 6.0 as specified in the instructions for Elements 5.0. Does anyone know how I can do this and have it show up in the effects folder?

Instructions for Elements 5.0 With XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects

I think the path has changed so that Photo Creations is now here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\

Sorry not to be able to be more specific.

Juergen what a great job!!

I always have problems with channel mixers so I decided to try a different way... more work but I think it will work all right.

I always duplicate a layer when faced with this type of problem, then desaturate. I then check to see if the problem is with just the color or if luminosity is involved. In this case as in many the problem is mostly in the color information.

I deleted the temp desaturated layer then opened a blank layer at the top of the pallet. I changed this layers mode to color.

I then decided to remove the red so I Alt clicked in the green area of the roof to sample that color then with a soft brush I painted over the red… it worked pretty good. I did this through out the photo… where I knew the color should be white or neutral I sampled a good white area and painted.

When I was done I used a hue/saturation layer and selected greens then picked the green area of the roof and moved the saturation slider to the left and adjusted the brightness a little. Then used the attached mask to determine where I wanted the correction.

Then just for something to do I added a sky.

I had no idea when I found this forum that everyone would put so much time and effort into it. How refreshing. Thank you so much Butch for this different solution to the problem. I have so much to learn. I still cannot figure out the correct path to load Grants tools correctly, so until I can do that I am going to try your way. I will let you know how I do.

I tried and tried til finally I got it. I used Butch's methods and was able to correct that photo and a similar one (this time with green "stripes") with a bunch of help from Butch.
Juergen, I sent Tony a private message and he suggested the following:

Elaine: Although Grants Tools will work it's more complicated in PSE6. I would highly recommend spending $8.99 and getting Graffi's Handy Actions Lite (or $12 for Handy Actions 3). They are self installing and have the channel mixer (along with other useful Tools). They work just the same as Grants and are a whole lot easier to install (Graffi has taken the trouble to get it all figured out and I haven't yet!).

I can't wait to find out how to use channels.
This is such a great forum. I can't wait to get up everyday to learn something new.

Elaine,
Those are great jobs. Practice makes perfect... :)

I would suggest to tone down the sky a little and, since the this is an old, somewhat noisy image, actually add some noise to the sky. That would make it look more authentic and original comparing it with the building.

I have several of these to do so would like some advice. My biggest problem is that I can spend too much time trying to "make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". I worked on this some and could probably do better, but don't how much time I should spend on it if there is only so much I can do. The original of this is a newspaper clipping.

Hi Elaine

To keep it quick you may want to invest in some noise reduction software.

I personally like Noiseware Professional plug-in... it is cheap and easy to use.

Another good one is Neat Image.
