I have no photo to post. :( We rode around all afternoon and everything is either green, brown or just plain dead. It was 91 deg. today and the forcast is for more of the same for many days to come. The drought has really taken a toll...I'm sure we won't have any colorful foliage here either. I can't show the changing season until it changes! So sad...

Is it just me or is the link back to the theme not working?

Darn you, Bill! :D

Janet -
Not so fast! 'Green, brown or dead' works perfectly ... if that's what it is, that's what it is. Or squash / pumpkins at the market? Carmel apples (my favorite staple of fall)?? Halloween items on sale?? Fall clothing on the window mannequins?? A rake with nothing to do??
And who knows what the rest of the week will bring with weather. I hope you don't give up on the theme ... your entries are always fun.
Bill
edit: Thanks Kim ... I fixed the link.

Kimi--love the single leaf as it falls to the ground!
We were driving down a road today and it appeared to be slowly raining leaves...just a few at a time, but steadily drifting down from the trees. I was wondering if I could capture the effect of them in mid-drop.

Okay, Bill, I'll try to get a more creative attitude goin'!:D It's just that the heat and humidity seem to suck the life right out of me in July, Aug. and Sept. By October I'm ready for some cooler temps and some moisture falling from the sky. I have been out taking photos recently as Mother Nature has blessed us with some beautiful skies in the last few weeks. (I put a few in my gallery this morning)
You've given me a few ideas...I'll see what I can come up with! Thanks for the creative nudge!;):D

Janet - I feel your pain! Our high yesterday was 96 degrees! Today, it was considerably cooler... a mere 91! In October!!!
But I'm enjoying everyone else's Fall pictures. Though after viewing Steven's photo, I feel inexplicably sad.
Great photos so far!

Kim, isn't it awful? My yard is a dust bowl, my flowers are all shriveled up and the leaves that are falling are crispy brown...not yellow or crimson or orange. Maybe we should go north for the winter?:(

Janet! I'm with you, though you'll have to remind me of this conversation come January and February when I'm sliding to work on snow and ice in temperatures hovering somewhere in the "teens" (if we're lucky!) :p

Kim,
It's been way too hot in the northeast part of Kentucky, too, around 90. I talked with my mother earlier and we were talking about how cold it was in April and how hot it's been in October. Guess we're never happy!
We have had some pretty fall leaves, just not as many as usual. Still a lot of green, maybe the 70s that are predicted for mid-week will help change that!
Kim2900, what part of KY are you in?

Kim R. - I'm located in the western portion of Kentucky, just a few hours from Louisville. I do hope we have some semblance of Fall and don't go right into cold weather from hot weather!
We still have a lot of green here, too!

I won't mention how many image I dumped in the trash trying to get just one.
In Louisiana we are pretty much still green.

Kentucky Kims--Central Indiana and Southwestern Ohio (we commute between both places a lot these days) are equally as hot and dry as you are in Kentucky.
Even the skies are ugly up here in Indiana--a dingy gray down low with some blues above. It's the dry weather plus the added dust of harvesting.
Our fall leaf colors are shaping up to be a lovely BROWN.

Lorri,
Our sky has been bright blue with lots of fluffy clouds lately, but rain is in our forecast and we need it!
Kentucky Kims, has a ring, doesn't it?:D

Wow, Suzi and Tony, looks like autumn has actually arrived in each of your locations! Nice shots---fall leaf color and temperatures cool enough to actually bundle up!
Hard to imagine here though--another day near 90 degrees!

90 degrees plus here too today but at least a few of the trees have figured out it's time to change and it is forecast to drop back down to the low 70's tomorrow.

Debra... I love Raintrees!!!!!!
My grandmother had one in her yard when I was growing up and every year she would make a point to show us when they were blooming. We can't find them in the nursery's. I have 4 in my yard. I stopped at a house and the very older woman let me dig them up from her yard. She said her son was coming that weekend to clean up her yard and get rid of all of the babies. She was happy that I knocked on the door. It has been 5 years and I have 2 that made flowers for the first time. Hope this proves to everyone, that I am just as strange in person.
I am pestering my kids to death... did you see my Raintree flowers?
Hopefully it will carry on and one day they will do the same. :D

Kimi,
I guess you really do llike them! I do like them too for the fall color. We had to cut down the ones in our front yard a few years ago when they declined. DH not crazy about the cotton stainers they attract so we replaced with magnolias.

What a great bunch of entries we got this week! Great work everyone.
Tina - Beautiful shot from colorful Wisconsin.
Lisa - The chestnut is great ... nicely in focus and very nice composition.
Kim R - Your shot does a great job of showing the wacky season for what it is. The shoes say it all.... and Devin certainly seems to be having fun!
Steven - Seems like our little corner of the world was the only place that wasn't sweltering last week. The anemometer looks like it's really spinning.
Kim 2900 - You did a great job with the faces!! ... and yes, it does look like there is a sub-plot.
Anita - That's the most organized pumpkin display I've ever seen. Great shot.
Rob - It really does make one want to lay down on the lawn and conk out. Wonderful entry!
Bamagirl - What a fun collage. The photos are all great, but the spider is fantastic.
Ellen - What a beautiful, simple shot to capture the feel of the season. Very creatively done!
Rusty - I can taste the pie!! I like the background and the bevel on the photo very much ... nice treatment.
Garry - That's a fun pumpkin patch and your photo does it justice. The colorful pumpkins and Indian corn contrast nicely against the white house.
Kimi - You got a winner! I actually like the bit of sky in the background ... it seems to give the leaf more motion. Nice frame treatment too! Very cool.
Suzi - Very cute shot. What's the setting for the shot? It looks like a youngster's soccer game where there isn't quite enough action to be able to keep warm.
Tony - I like them both, but the leaves are stunning. I don't find the colors overdone at all.
Joan - The framing and the subject matter are great, but I love the composition. Very nicely done!!
Steve - Glad you joined in! The colors in your entry are great and I love that the people have walked out of the focal range a bit. The bit of blur seems to suggest a passing to me. Nicely done.
Debra - The rain tree is new to me ... thanks for posting it. I was a bit concerned folks in Florida and California may not have much material to work with this week, but you found a great subject. Hope to see it after it turns to red.
Suzanne - Very nice. I love all the colors and the treatment works well with the image.
Kim - What a breathtaking shot. I love the birches!!!!
Lorri - You found a very nice seasonal display! Nice shot.
Janet - They're both fun, but the white pumkins with the bumps (technical term??) are great! I love all the colors in the flowers, sky and spool. Glad you were able to find something worthwhile ... like I said, your entries are always fun.
Pat - Snow in 3 weeks?? Really?? That sure sounds early, but looking at the photos sure shows how quickly the seasons can come and go.
Gary - Thanks for sitting on that for the week ... I think you saved everyone a bit of consternation. Beautiful entry as always ... you can see that the colors stretch into the distance forever.
Wonderful fun folks ... and still time for some more!

Bill, last year Halloween was warm and dry for the kids, unusual and always a treat in itself. That doesn't happen often and one thing for sure, whether the snow is here by Halloween or a couple of days after - it's here to stay! That's our norm this far north. I'm very jealous of all the heat I'm hearing about from everyone - even in Canada! Kinda missed us somehow.
I wanted to comment on your awesome pictures - I know you are still working on a satisfactory capture for yourself but they are so beautiful now. First time I've heard about capturing the movement of the starts, so I'm pretty darn impressed.
Where is the light falling on the trees coming from? That is sure a pretty element in the images. Looking forward to seeing more...

Thanks so much for the kind words Pat. I was away from city lights near Mt. Bachelor for a few nights this week, and the shots were taken from the balcony of my room. I was really surprised to see the light on the trees, because even after several minutes outside it was totally dark to the eye. I was expecting stars with silhouettes of the trees and quite surprised to find light that must have been picked up from the front side of the building.
Unfortunately the clouds rolled in quickly that night and stayed for the next two days:mad: so I couldn't experiment with more shots. Your beautiful part of the world might be a good spot to try some of those. My 'live and learn' tip (besides the obvious tripod) is to use a fully charged battery. Processing the image takes about as long as the shutter speed, and if you shoot a really long exposure it will leave your camera huffing and puffing by the time the image is ready.
Thanks again for the nice words.

I just might do that - can't even imagine what the process is so will have to read up. I sure do like it.
I have to be the only person on the forum who hasn't even tried shooting the moon yet! I got all geared up to try it from my deck one night a few weeks ago, beautiful full moon I followed all the way home. Unfortunately when I drove into my yard it was nowhere to be seen - I think it must be lower in the sky at this time of year plus the huge trees we're surrounded by totally blocked it. I was so mad!
So, stars are a real possibility until I find a good spot to capture the moon from - it's black and scarey at night time off my deck!
Looks beautiful where you visited to get those shots.
