View Full Version : PSE 6 "Import Failed"?

I installed PSE 6 tonight and started to import my folders. I have about 4000 photos that are in folders designated by year. It seems year 2006 has a corrupt imiage in it as I get an error message saying "import failed" and then the import process stops. I would have thought the one image would be excluded and the rest download but this is not the case. How do I find what jpeg is causing the issue or do I just need to import 50 at a time and go that way? I havent been able to find a resolution to this issue anywhere in the limited help menu. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You might try looking at your images with something like Ifranview - it's free. You may be able to find the corrupt image that way.

Thanks Trish.. I viewed the folder in picasa and was able to view them all fine. I am clueless which one of the 693 in that folder is the one causing the issue.. Out of 4000 broken up into 6 folders (years) I cant get 2006 to import. I have imported the folder by 20 at a time.. its time consuming.. havent finished yet...

I have this same problem. I even have narrowed it down to a jpg file that just won't import.
It as to be a bug, because there is nothing different about the file, and it is not corrupt. I can even open it in PS.
What a pain, huh??

Rollinthunder,
Open it and then save it again in Ifranview (or PS). There could be some EXIF or IPTC data that is incorrect/corrupted (while the image data is fine). Organizer is pretty picky.

Oddly, I had no problem importing anything in the previous version of Organizer.
I consider it a bug. I probably won't use it because I narrowed one folder down to one file, but several folders had problems, and frankly, it is not why I bought the program.
Thanks for the tip though.

I was also frustrated with this problem. I narrow it down to all photos that were generated off of videos from another program. When I removed those files (which work fine everywhere else), it imported, but now I"m having other problems and hope someone can help me.

Please see my post on the Adobe forum here:

I found that if I changed the EXIF version, added periods, the file imports.
Can anyone else having this problem confirm this?

How do you edit an exif file? I have no idea where it is at.
My problem came down to .jpg's that were greated through Pinnacle while getting stills off of a video.
They work everywhere else, but will not import. Once I removed the four folders with those files, the import worked.

Click on the properties of the file from explorer, then go to the details tab. I have vista, but I believe XP has this as well.

What file? PSE6 file? Which PSE6 file, the .exe one? Photo files?

Wow, this is pretty huge, generating an exception report after the fact is pretty much common place now. Sounds like one of the Adobe SW Engineers fell asleep during the error checking process. . .

You right click on the jpg files causing the havoc. The EXIF data is included in the file.
I don't mind a defect here and there, but I am a little pissed at the lack of response on their forum. You'd think they would be looking there for things they did miss in QA. Day 3, still no reply.

The adobe forums are user-to-user, just like here. However, there are some engineers that do "monitor" them and even occassionally post. I would submit a bug report.

Done, we'll see what happens. Thanks!
I ran a test, changed 300 file properties, and now the folder imports fine.

I have been busy solving my other problem with this program. I'll test this soon.
However, can you bunch change them? How did you do 300 of them? One at a time?

While attempting to import about 6,500 pics on my XP machine, PSE6 halted to display the unhelpful, uninformative "Import Failed" dialog box.
After several repeated attempts, I found that the failures were occurring whilst importing folders containing AVI files or .jpg files created on older cameras during 2003 and 2004. Such files didn't contain a timestamp within the metadata displayed during mouseover of the filename in windows explorer.
'Trevor' of Adobe Technical Support (800-642-3623) explained that such files may have damaged or incompatible header data. He then instructed me to Open the Elements Full Editor, click File>Process Multiple Files... and use the dialog to batch repair/rename the files. He stated that this process would not degrade the jpg quality since it would merely be altering the header data and filename of the file.
Once the files were processed, the PSE Organizer had no trouble importing all the files.
While I still think it very buggy, and was quite ready to return the software, 'Trevor' was very easy to reach, helpful and informative. He called me back a few hours later to make sure everything was well.

Hi
I've searched for import failure issues and came upon your forum.
Glad to see such active site.
After 6000 pics I can't import new Pics all of a sudden.
I use the same camera, If I remove a picture from the catalog I can't import it aqgain, so it has nothing to do with the EXIF data.
any new regarding the "import failed" bug ???
Thanks,
Kob

Kob,
If you have 6000 pics from the same camera, you may have passed the point where your camera is still creating unique filenames such as DSCF9999.jpg and is now creating DSCF0001.jpg etc... again
If so, PS Elements will not import any file of the same name as exists anywhere in the catalog.
Similarly, if you deleted the pic using any tool other than Elements, PSE 6 considers the file 'missing' not deleted.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick and kind response,
It's not because of file names, I'm experiencing the bug as described above.
I've tried reinstallation, registry reset, Pref file deletion, EXIF editing, nothing helps!!
Anyone had that problem and found a soloution ??!
I'm pretty desperate...

One thing to try when you have catalog issues is to repair it. Do File > Catalog > Repair, and select "repair anyway" if it asks.

Still refuses to import.:twisted::mad:
It seems as something in the file extension attributes is messed up, it won't import again a picture that i've just deleted from the catalog.
Is there a way to completely remove PSE6 from the computer, including the catalog itself, all registry entries, hidden files in system and application data folders etc, so that I can install it again as if it was the first time on this computer, and then import all pictures to a new catalog ?
If so - how, and what should I do besides writing the Tag data into the picture files?

What's the exact error message you're getting?
If you make a new catalog and import the file into it, do you still get the error?

"Import failed" message, with OK button,
then another popup window saying "
Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(S) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in this Catalog. "

As for the second question - i've tried a new catalog as well, can't import files.

It just came out of the blue. It's the same camera, same computer, and I've just imported photos like a month ago. I've tried repairing the catalog, tried to shoot some new images after formatting the SD in the camera, so it won't be corrupted - and nothing.
I've tried creating a new catalog and importing all the photos again - No luck.
The camera is a Canon S5IS which is pretty new and updated model from Canon.
I think that maybe adobe messed up with some software update.
My version of the program is:6.0 (20070910.r377499).
If anyone have any suggestion it would be great. I see that this thread is operating for at list half a year without any response from Adobe. That not what I consider a good software company.

Removed the program, cleaned my registry with 2 registry cleaners. Reinstalled PSE 6 and got the same error again!

There have been no updates to PSE 6. The ACR plug-in has been updated several times, but you need to install that manually.
You might consider following the steps in Adobe's don't-have-a-clue troubleshooting document:
http://www.adobe.com/go/kb402520 (XP)
http://www.adobe.com/go/kb402603 (Vista)
especially the steps about resetting preferences, reinstalling in simplified mode (including anti-virus turned off), and running as administrator. I'd stop short of reformatting your desk and reinstalling Windows, though!
These steps sometimes help people but often don't.

To help others struggling with this, can you say which particular steps in the troubleshooting document you tried? Thanks.

I've tried deleting the preference files and the registry items. Tried to create a new catalog.
I see no point in the other steps like opearting the program in safe mode, if someone wants to try it he welcomes.
There are 2 things that come to mind that changed in my computer since the last time I've been able to import pictures: I've installed photoshop cs3 and I've installed service pack 3 for Windows XP.
If anyone used similar settings, please share.

Can you copy and paste the files from the card (camera) to your HD using Windows Explorer?

Re SP3, a few people on the forums reported some problems when it first deployed, but many others reported no problems. (I have SP3.) It’s been out long enough now that if there were widespread problems with it, I think we would have heard more complaints.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an SP3 problem on your configuration. Can you do a System Restore to temporarily roll back your computer to right before the installation of SP3 (and Photoshop)?
Re the other troubleshooting steps, there are plausible reasons why they might affect a problem like yours:
5. Run Photoshop Elements in a simplified mode. It may be that something you recently installed or that Windows installed for you now conflicts with PSE. So running in simplified mode is a quick way to check for such conflicts.
9. Reinstall Photoshop Elements in a simplified mode. Adobe believes, and some people have reported on the forums, that reinstalling PSE with anti-virus and other services disabled have sometimes fixed problems. It may be that a recent change to your computer’s configuration has triggered a latent installation problem, and doing a clean, simplified reinstall will fix that.
10. Run Photoshop Elements in a new user account. There are a few reasons to try this: First, the PSE uninstall doesn’t remove all registry entries and files, and even if you think you might have removed them manually, you might have missed something. Running in a new account will give you new per-user files and registry entries. Second, Adobe believes a user account can get “damaged”. A few people have posted that running PSE in a new account fixed their problems. Third, PSE seems very sensitive to obscure permission problems, and running in a new user account may avoid them (but it seems that permission problems are perhaps more common on Vista).
As I said previously, any one of these steps has a low probability of fixing your problem.

and if these don't help, suggest you contact the forums or troubleshoot on the adobe site. This forum is not affiliated with adobe in any way, so unlikely to see a response from them here.

@Jurgen:
Yes. The photo donwloader actually copy the files to the computer and when it tries to import them into the organizer it failes.
@johnrellis:
I will try that. although everything works perfectly. The computer was formatted with an original disk of windows XP SP3, so I can't roll back.
I will try using a different user account.
@ljameso1:
It's already there if anyone wants to see how this thing goes:

Sorry we couldn't help. I read the link. I think Barbara's suggestion of trying a card reader may be valid. They are pretty inexpensive and faster than attaching the camera.

Tried with no luck.
What really amazed me is that I've tried creating a complete new windows user, and still get's the same error. something weird is going on here.

Are you able to uninstall the 2 programs you said you installed since the last time it worked? Maybe one of them is corrupt and screwing up PSE. Try taking them off and re-testing PSE to see if still happens. Are you able to get your hands on an older version of PSE to install and see if that has problems as well? Could try pm to Wendy. She often can figure these bugs out. If all else fails I guess spend some money for trevor on the # listed at the start of this thread. Maybe being able talk to a real person at adobe would solve the issue.

I've got the same problem a few weeks ago and I've decided yesterday to reinstall Windows XP. Here are the steps I took right after the installation:
1. Installed SP3.
2. I installed PSE6 and restored my catalog -> everything was working ok
3. Ran Windows Update again and was asked to install the following Critical Updates:
- Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
- Update for Windows XP (KB951978) (javascript:parent.fnExpandDetails(15);)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB951698)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376) (javascript:parent.fnExpandDetails(14);)
- Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB950760)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB950762) (javascript:parent.fnExpandDetails(10);)
- Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 (KB923689)
- Update for Windows XP (KB942763) (javascript:parent.fnExpandDetails(12);)
- Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and 11 (KB941569)
4. After installing all the above updates I've got the "Import Failed" error again.
Right now I've just finished reinstalling Windows XP again and repeated steps 1-2 only.
I hope this information will help someone...
By the way, besides the "Import Failed" error I was also unable to perform some of the quick fixes on my photos (e.g. "Auto Levels failed" when trying to perform the Auto Levels fix right from the Fix menu).

I am having similar import problems in PSE5 where it is only importing about 10% of my photos correctly and claims the rest are "damaged". I tried the batch processing on a few of the files as a test and it does allow them to be imported after processing. However, even though I have none of the conversion or image sizing boxes checked it seems to be greatly reducing the file size. For example, it reduces a JPG from 1.70 MB to 230 KB but the strange thing is that the number of pixels, bit-depth, and dpi are all the same. I guess it could have changed the compression but I don't see anyway to check that? Any ideas?
