While hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway trails I decided to use photography and PSE to document the effects of the current drought on Parkway features. This pair of shots in my gallery graphically shows the difference in water flow in a nearby waterfall on the Parkway.

Thomas great pictures. They show the severe effect of the drought. I live close to the North GA mountains and frequently hike Amicola Falls. The decrease in the falls are drastic. All the lakes in our area area going dry. Two of our largest lakes, Allatoona and Lake Lanier, are the lowest ever on record. They predict Allatoona could be completely dry by February, don't know where we will get our water if we don't have a lot of rain.

Posting those photos side by side sure made it obvious how severe the drought is. My family and I spent a week at Lake Lanier in Georgia in mid September, and the lake was so low with the muddy red showing all over. I was told the lake was anywhere from 12 to 14 feet below normal.

And Charlotte, how funny that you mentioned Amicolola Falls. We drove there too, and my sister mentioned how sparse the falls were in comparison to when she had been there months before.

Sad to see, but all in all, a gorgeous part of the country...and the start of the Appalachian Trail.

Agree on the drought and Lake Allatoona (live just a stone throw off Allatoona) along with Amicolola Falls. Went to the Falls about a month ago and didn't even take any pictures ... we need rain and lots of it too.

Dane, didn't realize we lived so close:rolleyes: It is really scary about the lakes being so low and it doesn't look like any relief in the near future.

Mary Ann, thanks for the compliment about GA, I think it is a beautiful place to live. The Weather Channel says it’s the worst drought in 100 yrs for the state of GA. Thomas' picture brings the water shortage to reality. To see one of the tallest falls in GA trickle down is not a good sign. :(
