Back to basics time again....ever get the feeling that you're trying to run before you can walk?

I'm having problems saving layers so I can use them again. For instance, I've just created a slide mount from scratch & used it as a frame for a few pictures ( as Scott shows inPE3 Down & Dirty Tricks) I'm pleased with the result fora first effort bot I'm blowed if I can see how to save the slide mount template I've created without it being attached to a white background. I'm sure that as per usual it's very simple when you know how, but would sure appreciate some help.....

Thanks

Good Morning Bayla

What format are you saving it as? To save the transparent background you will need to save it as a .psd file. Jpg's don't support transparency.

Let us know if this solves it for you :)

Thank you thank you thank you Mary. I knew it would be something simple! Back to the drawing board to redo the slide mount and save it as a psd file!

On the subject of saving am I correct in assuming that it is preferable to save anything you've worked on in psd format rather than jpeg?

Thanks once again

You are absolutely correct :) for 2 reasons. The .psd format saves all your layers and transparency and it is a lossLESS format. Each time you edit and then save as a .jpg there is an algorithm that is applied to your picture that tosses out pixels. I only save a copy as a .jpg if I am going to post it to the web or email it. I use .tif if I am going to use it in another program that doesn't handle Photoshop files - e.g. Word, PowerPoint etc.

Hope that helps :)

Mary, if you are going to save a photo that will be copied on a DVD to submit to a magazine....what would you save it as?
I know it has to be 371 resolution, which I have yet to figure out.
Any ideas?
Thanks so much,
Nancy

Hi Nancy ...

Do they say what format they want it as ... or the dimentions?

To change the dimentions and the resolution you can use Image>Resize>Image Size.

When you save using Save As you have the option at that stage to specify the type of file ... tiff, psd, jpg etc.

Hi Wendy...glad you are still on! You must have grabbed a cup of coffee too.
Here is the criteria they need.

We also accept electronic files. They should be submitted via e-mail or CD in the following format: at least 300 d.p.i. resolution, sized 3x5" or 4x6", and TIF, EPS, or JPEG format. Please include printed "thumbnails" of each file.

Hi Nancy ...

Look at your images in Image>Resize>Image Size and make sure that Resample image is not ticked.

Change one of the dimentions (lower part of the box) and the others should change themselves .. make sure that they are correct to the specification.

Now you can use Save As and save yout image in one of the formats they suggest .. I would go for tiff.
