Hi everyone,

I am in a photography class where we are urged to shoot in RAW format, which I know Elements can handle.

However, I'm a little confused by the ability to save RAW images after I have enhanced and cropped my photos. The assignment was to bring 4 or 5 of my favorite photos to class on a thumbdrive to share with the rest of the class. Not knowing what type of viewer would be used in the classroom, I thought it would be best to save my favorite photos as .jpg images.

However, from the Elements workspace, the only options I have available are .PSD, .PDF, .RAW, .TIF, .PNG, and .JPF (jpeg 2000 format).

Can someone tell me why the standard .jpg file type is not available in Elements, when saving an enhanced .CR2 file? Is this issue (saving RAW to JPG) inherent to Elements or is it a similar issue with Photoshop?

I was very worried about saving to the JPF file type because when I view the JPF images inside the Windows folder I cannot see a preview of the image like you can the JPG. I was afraid I would take a thumbdrive full of photos that could not be viewed by my school's technology.

I did notice that the JPF file "holds" the camera information, whereas the PNG file type does not.

Thank you for your knowledge on this subject.

Natalie,
When you start editing in the Editor, change the mode to 8 bits (>Image >Mode). RAW images are in 16 bit mode, which JPEG does not support.
