I just posted some photos in my gallery of one of my favorite City's to visit. It’s only a 6 hr drive from my home. Long story short, it rained and rained and then rained some more. So I came home and the rain followed me.

It’s a beautiful City if you’re ever that way it’s worth a layover.

Thanks all. The pictures aren't that great but I'm blaming it on the weather and a camera I'm not quite use to:rolleyes: The City is beautiful and I think if I had a half a chance I would move there.

Nice pictures, good memories,
When I was stationed at Fort Stewart near Savannah we "did" St Augustine several times. Glad you got the Castillo de San Marcos; you picked a good angle.

Is the Burger King still in the center of the old section? The only BK I've ever seen that looks like it's 300 years old. :)

Charlotte, thanks for posting that gorgeous picture! I've been here 6 years and I keep telling my husband I want to go there for a long weeked. I have been really wanting to visit St. Augustine. I hear it is lovely and I can see that from the picture!

Rusty, I'm not sure if the Burger King is still there, I remember it being there but this trip it was raining so hard we didn't really get to spend a lot of time on the square, a lot of the roads were flooded. If your ever this way let me know, I'd love to meet you there, it would give me a reason to drive back down. I had a cousin stationed at Fort Stewart and visited there often back in the 70's. My grandparents had a house on St. Simons until they passed away in the 80s. So now I just visit the Island a lot. Development has taken over most of the Island and it makes me sad when I visit there now.

You definitely need to visit. It is such a beautiful place and full of nice-friendly people. I love to sit on the waterfront and just watch the boats go in and out of the channel. The City itself is historic and full of museums and historic sites. My trip was a wash out but I plan on going back around February before it gets too hot. So if you head that way in early Spring let me know. Have you ever visited Cumberland Island, just a few miles up the coast just over the GA line. If not, add that to your weekend trip.

And... don't miss Fort Frederica -- just a few miles north of St. Simons

Not only a good "photo site", you'll learn some history as well. Despite growing up in the South and thinking I was really up on its early history, my visit there really opened my eyes to an awful lot about the period when England and Spain were jousting back and forth in that part of our world.

Good Stuff!

PS - Charlotte, I would LOVE to go back. Back when I was still gainfully employed, business meetings brought me to Sea Island quite often. It's a tough life but, somebodies gotta do it :)

PPS - my beautiful daughter was born at Fort Stewart so she can tell people, with pride, "I'm from Gawja"!

Rusty, your right there is a lot of history in the Islands in that area. I have tons of photos taken at Fort Frederica. I remember when you could tour the park anytime you wanted without being under watchful eyes. We use to fish right behind the old jail in the fort. Can't do that now. My grandmother is buried behind one of the historic churches just outside the Fort Frederica's gate. Beautiful old cemetary dating back to the 1800's.

Rusty, by any chance did you stay at the Cloisture? My uncle was head chef there for 40 yrs, maybe he cooked for you. His name was Herman Yursich.

Never been to Cumberland Island or Fort Frederica but I will definitely put it on my list of "must sees". Definitely going to go to St. Augustine that's for sure.

Sounds like a road trip! great photo Charlotte. I need to take another of the lighthouse. Because....when I last tried, I was trying to get just the lighthouse without any trees or anything "in the way".
That was in my earlier and "not so smart as I am now" days of photographing anything.

Michelle with the old oak trees surrounding the lighthouse its impossible to get a full shot of just the lighthouse unless your right at the base of it which then you'd have to shoot straight up. It would be fun to get a group from the forum to go. You should post the pictures of the lighthouse you took, I'd like to see them.

Yep, Charlotte, the Cloisters on Sea Island.

I was a member of a professional group (Fortune 200 companies) that met every September. Naturally, in a nice place. We had five or six locations that we rotated thru. I joined the group in the mid 1980s and was with them for 15 years -- probably went to Sea Island five or six times in that period.

Judy, glad you liked the statue. The Lightner Museum had beautiful statues and paintings all over the museum. I couldn't believe they let us take pictures.

Rusty, the Cloister on Sea Island is where my uncle was the head Chef for years. The Cloister brought him over from Italy to be the head Chef. He could barely speak English. It was great having him for an uncle, free place to stay on the Island and lots of great food and lots of stories from the old Country.

I'll bet that was fun, Charlotte,

It's such a beautiful place. And, wow, you sure could eat well when visiting your uncle!
